2023 ALL-BIG TEN HONORABLE MENTION: John Paddock,...Paddock threw for 1,278 yards and nine touchdowns on the season.   Turns out one transfer quarterback wasn't enough for Illinois coach Bret Bielema. The Illini secured a commitment from former Ball State starter John Paddock on Monday, per a report from the Athletic's Max Olson, and he will join Ole Miss transfer Luke Altmyer in Champaign for the 2023 season. Paddock has Illinois football ties. His great grandfather, Robert Wright, played football and ran track at Illinois and was the Illini track and field coach from 1965-74. His grandfather, John Wright Sr., and uncle John Wright II also played football at Illinois. The elder John Wright was selected in the second round of the 1968 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

Paddock's season in Champaign will be his sixth in college football. The 6-foot, 196-pound Paddock played in one game in 2018 and one in 2019 for the Cardinals and then did not see any action in 2020. Paddock was again Ball State's backup in 2021 and appeared in two games. Paddock started all 12 games this past season. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native completed 286 of 480 passes (59.6 percent) for 2,719 yards, 18 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Ball State finished the season 5-7 after losing its final three games. - News Gazette Tribune

Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in transfer portal or planning to enter as of Dec. 1 is Ball State's John Paddock: Paddock is a fourth-year junior who started for the first time this season. He is fifth in the nation with 481 passing attempts and 11th with 287 completions (59.7 completion percentage). He threw for 2,713 with 18 TDs but also 14 picks. With that many attempts, you figure there would be more yards and more completions. - NFL Draft Scout and online sources

OCT 3 MAC WEST DIVISION OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: John Paddock, Ball State, QB, R-Junior, Bloomfield Hills, Mich. (Bloomfield Hills),...Paddock led the way offensively after throwing 40-of-58 for 403 yards and three touchdowns. It's the most yards thrown by a Cardinal since Drew Plitt had 439 vs. Fordham on Sept. 7, 2019 and the eighth-most passing yards in program history. Paddock captained what was the third-largest comeback in program history, as the Cardinals came back from trailing 21-0 to win 44-38 in two overtimes vs. NIU. After trailing 24-7 at halftime, Paddock went 23-of-34 for 237 yards and two touchdowns and led the offense to score on six of its eight drives in the second half and overtime to highlight the comeback. Paddock connected with nine different receivers, including seven with multiple catches and four with at least six receptions for 70-plus yards. Through five games, Paddock leads the conference and is ninth in the country with 1,538 passing yards and is second in the league with 11 touchdowns through the air. - MAC Football

John Paddock passed for 403 yards, Carson Steele's third rushing touchdown was the go-ahead score in the second overtime and Ball State defeated Northern Illinois 44-38 on Saturday after trailing by 17 points at the half. Ball State's win overshadowed a 230-yard, three-touchdown rushing performance by Harrison Waylee of Northern Illinois. After Steele's short touchdown in the second overtime, a sack by Ball State's Cole Pearce left NIU facing fourth-and-19 from the 34-yard line then Ethan Hampton's fourth-down pass was broken up by Tyler Potts.

Paddock completed 40 of 58 passes and threw for three touchdowns. Jayshon Jackson had 10 receptions for 116 yards. Tanner Koziol had two TD catches, including a 6-yarder with 36 second left in regulation as the Cardinals scored 10 points in 3 1/2 minutes to force overtime. As much as Ball State (2-3, 1-1 Mid-American) went to the air, Northern Illinois (1-4, 0-1) kept to the ground. The Huskies had 57 rushes for 332 yards. Both teams missed field goals in the first overtime and Ball State failed on a two-point attempt following Steele's go-ahead touchdown. The Cardinals won the Battle for the Bronze Stalk. The trophy has been awarded to the winner of this matchup since 2008. - Ball State/AP College Football

SEPT 26 MAC WEST DIVISION OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: John Paddock, Ball State, QB, R-Junior, Bloomfield Hills, Mich. (Bloomfield Hills),...Quarterback John Paddock had a career day under center with career highs of 338 passing yards and 33 completions in a shootout against Sun Belt contender Georgia Southern. He connected with seven different receivers en route to being the first player in four seasons to complete at least 30 passes in a game at Ball State (Drew Plitt at NC State, Sept. 21, 2019). Paddock is one of just two MAC quarterbacks (Ohio's Kurtis Rourke) to have multiple 300-yard passing games. In fact, Paddock has produced 29 percent of all the MAC's 300-yard performances this season, while leading one of the conference's most outstanding offenses at 441 total offensive yards per game. - MAC Football
