Billy Kemp IV, Nebraska, Player News
|
Nebraska struck gold on receiver transfer additions the previous two offseasons. It will have a chance to do so again after landing another veteran Power Five performer out of the portal on Monday night. Former Virginia wideout Billy Kemp committed to th e Huskers following a weekend visit to campus. The 5-foot-9, 172-pounder piled up 1,174 receiving yards and 192 grabs - fourth most in school history - during his five college campaigns spanning 50 games (25 starts). He chose Nebraska over interest from at least half a dozen other Power Five suitors.Kemp has one season of eligibility remaining because of a recent NCAA decision granting Virginia seniors an extra year in the wake of the November shooting deaths of three football players and subsequ ent cancellation of the team's final two games. He had initially declared for the draft last month before entering the portal Dec. 30. NU has hit well on portal receivers of late, serving as a one-season springboard into the NFL for Samori Toure (2021) a nd Trey Palmer (2022). - Lincoln Journal Star

Virginia receiver Billy Kemp IV is readying himself for an altered role in his fifth and final go-around with the Hoos. "I'm getting more opportunities in the slot with this offense," Kemp said. "The past two years I've been playing a lot outside, but fo r a guy like me, I feel like I can really work and maneuver in the slot, so I'm thankful [offensive coordinator Des] Kitchings is giving me the chance to do that and I'm thankful for them coaching me up in that position." Kemp, who tallied 74 catches las t season, 67 the year before and enters this fall with 1,658 receiving yards to go along with eight receiving touchdowns in his career, said he's absorbed some of the nuances particular to the inside receiver position from former college stars and NFL pl ayers that have excelled in the slot. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

With a returning starter at quarterback and five players back who caught a touchdown pass last year, there's reason to believe Virginia's passing game could take a sizeable step up this football season. But Tuesday, for the team's first practice of the s pring, the offense had a simpler, humbler goal. "We just wanted to come out here and keep the ball off the ground," said senior Billy Kemp IV. That's a fine target for Day 1, but going forward Kemp said the Cavaliers' aim will be more than just catching the football. They hope to produce more big plays in the throw game.Last season, UVa turned in 34 passing plays that went for 20 yards or longer, the 10th most in the ACC. Virginia ranked seventh in the league in passing offense last season, avera ging 260.6 yards per game through the air as it went 5-5. Its 22 passing touchdowns were the sixth most in the league. With junior left-hander Brennan Armstrong back at quarterback and a host of potentially explosive targets, led by Kemp, sophomore Lavel Davis Jr. and senior Ra'Shaun Henry, all returning, UVa figures to be more effective through the air, despite the losses of three of the team's top five pass catchers. - Roanoke Times

Billy Kemp IV practices like he plays, according to Bronco Mendenhall. That's bad news for Virginia's defensive backs. Through two games, the 5-foot-9, 170-pound junior is terrorizing opposing defenses. Despite being one of the smaller players on the fie ld, Kemp IV is one of the most dynamic. He caught 10 passes for 96 yards against Clemson, following up a seven-catch, 70-yard performance against Duke to open the season. "He's been the most consistent, the most competitive and the most productive player on our roster, period," Mendenhall said. Kemp IV leads the ACC in receptions per game with 8.5. That average is good for the fourth-best mark nationally. His 83 yards per game ranks second in the conference and 24th nationally. Through two games, he's b een one of the most productive receivers in college football. "His lack of size is what's challenging," senior cornerback De'Vante Cross said. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
