Brennan Armstrong didn't have a hard decision to make after the 2022 football season, nor did the quarterback take long to make it. Robert Anae had been named the new offensive coordinator at N.C. State. Armstrong played for Anae at Virginia in 2021, set ting several school offensive records. Armstrong officially entered the NCAA transfer portal, but that was pretty much a formality. He quickly knew where he wanted to transfer. "I wanted to find a place where I could succeed in, and I thought this place was bottom-line it," Armstrong said Friday on a media call.Armstrong, a left-handed passer and graduate student, calls it a "quarterback friendly" offense. The key, as with all teams, is for there to be a friendly quarterback room, with egos put a side. "We're here to compete but we're also here to help each other," Armstrong said. "The competition will help each other grow. It's been pretty easy, honestly. The competition is hot, but that's what makes us better." At Virginia, Armstrong set single -season records for yards passing (4,449) and touchdowns (31) under Anae in 2021, passing for a school-record 554 yards in one game. - Raleigh News Observer

Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong is transferring to North Carolina State. Armstrong announced his decision in a social media post Saturday. The move allows him to reunite with his former offensive coordinator Robert Anae, who directed the Cavaliers ' offense during the most productive years of Armstrong's career with the Cavaliers and recently signed on to lead the Wolfpack's attack.Armstrong threw for 4,449 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2021, including a program-record 554 yards in a loss at N orth Carolina. But he struggled last year in a different offense under first-year coach Tony Elliott. Armstrong's arrival gives the Wolfpack a veteran option after losing Devin Leary to Kentucky. Leary was the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference player o f the year but missed the second half of the year with an injury, while N.C. State cycled through three other starting quarterbacks for the rest of the season. - AP College Football

The hiring of Robert Anae as offensive coordinator has helped N.C. State bring in another quarterback. Brennan Armstrong, who played for Anae at Virginia and set school records in 2021, announced Saturday on social media that it was "Time to run with the Pack" and would join the Wolfpack program as a transfer. Anae left Virginia after the 2021 season, going to Syracuse, then was hired by Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren to replace Tim Beck as offensive coordinator. Beck left to become head coach at Coastal Ca rolina.Armstrong, a lefthander, entered the NCAA transfer portal in early December and speculation quickly began that he might join Anae at N.C. State - the Wolfpack also hired Virginia offensive line coach Garett Tujague as its new line coach. Ar mstrong set single-season records for yards passing (4,449) and touchdowns (31) under Anae in 2021, passing for a school-record 554 yards in one game. But with head coach Bronco Mendenhall and Anae leaving Virginia after the 2021 season, Armstrong's numb ers dipped significantly in Tony Elliott's first year as the Virginia head coach: 2,210 passing yards, seven touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2022. - The News & Observer

Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong entered the transfer portal on Thursday, The Daily Progress confirmed. The Athletic and On3 first reported the news. Armstrong qualifies as a graduate transfer, and grad transfers do not have to wait for the newly i mplemented transfer window to enter the portal. The first window opens on Monday and runs through Jan. 18. A second window is slated for the spring, but grad transfers can put their name in at any time.Armstrong is UVa's all-time leader for passin g yards, total offense, passing touchdowns, 200-yard passing games and 300-yard passing games. He holds the Cavaliers' single-season records for passing yards, total offense and passing touchdowns, too, which were all set in 2021 when he thrived in the a ir raid system the Hoos used under former offensive coordinator Robert Anae and ex-quarterbacks coach Jason Beck. The left-handed signal-caller tallied 4,449 passing yards in 2021 to go along with 31 touchdown passes. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in, or planning to be to enter the transfer portal as of Dec. 1 Is Virginia's Brennan Armstrong: He had a huge 2021 season, throwing for 4,449 yards and 31 TDs; he als o ran for nine touchdowns. But a coaching change led to a philosophy change, and his stats fell off the table this season. He threw for less than half of what he did in '21 (2,210, with just seven TDs), and while he led the team in rush attempts, he mana ged just 371 yards and six TDs. In a system that favors the pass but likes its quarterback to be a running threat, Armstrong – who has one season of eligibility remaining – can put up big numbers again. - NFL Draft Scout and online sources

Pittsburgh led Virginia 14-0 just 16 seconds into their game after Brennan Armstrong's first two passes were intercepted and returned for touchdowns. M.J. Devonshire's pick-6 went for 29 yards and Marquis Williams' for 39. It was each player's second int erception return for TDs this season. The game was Pitt's first with two interception returns for TDs since Sept. 2, 2006, when Darrelle Revis and Clint Session had pick-6s against Virginia. It was a tough day for Armstrong. He was sacked eight times and finished 17 of 33 for 152 yards and a touchdown. Only two FBS quarterbacks have thrown more than Armstrong's 12 interceptions this season. - AP College Football

Brennan Armstrong helped Virginia overcome a difficult start in the first quarter to account for 349 yards of total offense and help the Cavaliers snap a three-game skid with a 16-9 victory over Georgia Tech on Thursday night. In a matchup of the two low est-scoring teams in the ACC, Virginia (3-4, 1-3) avoided an 0-4 start in conference play for the first time since 2014. The Cavaliers stopped a five-game losing streak on the road. Georgia Tech (3-4, 2-2) had won two straight for the first time since it had a four-game streak four years ago and was trying to move above .500 at the latest point in a season since 2018. Though Virginia's offense hardly looked spectacular, Armstrong did enough to keep the team moving while the defense stalled Georgia Tech throughout the second half. Nick Jackson and Chico Bennett Jr., a transfer from Georgia Tech, led the way with a combined eight solo stops and had four of the team's eight sacks. Jackson had a big sack on the Georgia Tech's next-to-last possession to for ce a fourth down and drop the Jackets back to the 48 with 1:52 remaining.Fentrell Cypress II broke up a fourth-down pass in Virginia territory. Armstrong was 20 of 35 passing for 255 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He ran 13 times for 94 yards and a score. With quarterback Jeff Sims starting the game for Georgia Tech but sidelined in the second quarter because of an apparent left knee injury, Zach Gibson took over and led the offense to the Virginia 1. The Jackets couldn't get any farther, and Gavin Stewart kicked a 35-yard field goal that cut the lead to 13-9 at halftime. Gibson lost a fumble at the Georgia Tech 5 in the third quarter, but the Yellow Jackets' defense held when Lavel Davis dropped a touchdown pass in the left cor ner of the end zone, and the Cavaliers settled for a 28-yard field by Will Bettridge that padded the lead to 16-9. Dontayvion Wicks caught a 44-yard TD pass, weaving through several defenders down the left sideline to put the Cavaliers up 13-6 midway thr ough the second when Bettridge missed the extra point. Armstrong broke Matt Schaub's school record with his 57th career TD pass. - Virginia/AP College Football

Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong talked about his former position coach Jason Beck like someone talks about their ex-lover once they're in a new relationship. He expressed appreciation for his time with Beck but was quick to transition the conversa tion into talk of his current QB coach, Taylor Lamb. Lamb was hired in January after Beck departed Virginia for Syracuse football. "I grew up with (Beck) four straight years of my college career. He taught me a lot, but I think with coach Lamb now it's m ore of a partnership," Armstrong said. "I think the relationship I have with coach Lamb is a lot better in a sense because I feel like it's a partnership." Armstrong explained that the age difference between him and each coach plays a big part in the dif ferent feels of the relationships.Beck is in his late 30s while Lamb is 27. Armstrong will turn 23 in October. "I wouldn't be in the position I am without (Beck) there and the staff that was there, but I'm just fortunate that I get to have a diffe rent person now with coach Lamb and gain more knowledge from someone else," Armstrong said. "That's the only thing you can really do is just keep getting more knowledge at playing the position." Armstrong was the No. 4 QB in the country last season. He t hrew for 4,449 yards and 31 touchdowns, completing 65% of his passes. The senior has already been named to watch lists for the 2022 Maxwell Award and Davey O'Brien Award, both of which he was a semifinalist for in 2021. - The Post-Standard

Virginia has more than a few NFL prospects on its 2022 roster, according to talent-evaluators at the East-West Shrine Bowl. On Wednesday, the annual postseason All-Star event released the East-West Shrine Bowl 1,000 to provide insight into the game's sco uting process. Typically, 1,000 all-star game eligible players are drafted, signed after the draft or invited to a rookie camp, so the list features 1,000 of college football's best players who are eligible for this season's Shrine Bowl as well as the 20 23 NFL Draft.Seven Cavaliers-quarterback Brennan Armstrong, defensive end Kam Butler, linebacker Nick Jackson, cornerback Anthony Johnson, wide receiver Billy Kemp IV, safety Coen King and wide receiver Keytaon Thompson-were listed. Armstrong is t he headliner of the group following the signal-caller's decision to return to school for a fifth season with the Hoos after setting the school's single-season passing record and mark for passing touchdowns last year. His blunt assessment revealed plenty about the transition. Virginia wrapped up spring drills Saturday with its Blue-White Game and before Cavaliers senior quarterback Brennan Armstrong departed Scott Stadium, he answered a question regarding the together ness of the Hoos' veteran nucleus in the aftermath of new coach Tony Elliott's first spring. Armstrong said UVa's core is much tighter, and his response left no doubt about how those older, experienced players have embraced the fresh direction Elliott ha s for the program. "There's a lot of things new," Armstrong said, "but I tell them it has to be new. 'What we did last year was 6-6, guys,' and we're all trying to buy into that." Elliott said Armstrong has believed in him and his staff since they arrive d.The quarterback made frequent visits to the McCue Center for film study in an effort to learn Elliott and new offensive coordinator Des Kitchings' system prior to the start of spring practices. The left-handed signal-caller furthered his quest t o accelerate the process, according to his coach, throughout those sessions, too. "I'm proud of Brennan," Elliott said. "He made a decision to come back and then some of his buddies decided not to come back, but he still stuck with it. Quarterback Brennan Armstrong, awaiting a grade from the NFL's draft advisory board, has no plans to transfer from Virginia. Armstrong, who attended new UVA football coach Tony Ellliott's introductory press conference Monday, said he'll either turn pro o r return to the Cavaliers. "I don't think I'm ever transferring," said Armstrong. "I'm not going to transfer. It's either here or the NFL. This season, his second as UVA's starting quarterback, Armstrong has set school records for passing yards (4,449), total offensive yards (4,700) and touchdown passes (31). Brennan Armstrong threw four touchdown passes and ran for two more scores and Virginia rallied from a slow start and beat Georgia Tech 48-40 on Saturday night, the Cavaliers' fourth straight victory. Armstrong connected with Dontayvion Wicks for touchdow ns of 13 and 77 yards, Billy Kemp IV from a yard out and Ra'Shaun Henry from 20 yards. He scored on runs of 4 and 14 yards as the Cavaliers (6-2, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) rallied after trailing 13-0 midway through the first quarter. Coach Bronco Me ndenhall was delighted with how his offense performed - "There's lots and lots of production happening out there. Super fun to watch," he said after the Cavaliers rolled up 636 yards. He was less enamored of his special teams and defense, which allowed t he Yellow Jackets to turn Virginia's 48-27 lead into a nail-biter at the end by recovering a pair of onside kicks. His players weren't thrilled with that turn of events either. "You know, coming into the fourth, I can't remember how much we were up , but we were we were up a lot so giving up those two onside kicks in and having our defense come back out and not play well was definitely, definitely not great," defensive back Coen King said. Wicks said the win was the most important thing, but in the locker room afterward, "being that it didn't have to go like that, it was a little accountability." Jeff Sims threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns and Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 132 yards, including a 71-yard TD burst, for the Yellow Jackets (3-4, 2-3), w ho lost for the 13th time in their last 15 visits to Scott Stadium. - Virginia/AP College Football

Brennan Armstrong threw for two first-half touchdowns and ran for another and Virginia scored on all six possessions before halftime in a 48-0 victory over Duke, it's seventh straight in the series. Armstrong hit Dontayvion Wicks on a 20-yard corner rout e and Jelani Woods with five seconds left in the first half as the Cavaliers (5-2, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) built a 34-0 lead. The victory margin was the Cavaliers' largest since they beat VMI 49-0 in 2013, and largest in an ACC game since they beat Miami 48-0 in 2007. Earlier in the season, after opening with two impressive wins, the Cavaliers defense was maligned after allowing 699 yards in a 59-39 loss to North Carolina and then losing 37-17 at home against No. 16 Wake Forest. "We're just playing more physical. We're playing with more passion. We're having fun out there," linebacker Nick Jackson said. "We just got bac k to going out there and having fun and we're celebrating and having fun, just doing our little things." The Blue Devils (3-4, 0-3) arrived third in the league with an average of 496.8 yards of offense, but mounted just one drive in the first half. Virginia caught a break. Miami didn't. And in the end, the Cavaliers needed every second to escape with a win. Dontayvion Wicks had a circus catch for a touchdown, Brennan Armstrong passed for 268 yards and Virginia added to Miami's struggles by beating the Hurricanes 30-28 on Thursday night. "I'm so happy for my team," Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall said. Miami freshman kicker Andy Borregales missed a 33-yard field goal try as time expired, the ball bouncing off the left upright. The Hurricanes drove 75 yards in 14 plays on their final drive, almost stealing a game they never led and in which they trailed 27-14 in the third quarter. "Got to put him in a better situation. Offense has got to score," said Miami running back Cam'Ron Harris, who rushed f or 111 yards and a pair of touchdowns. "We shouldn't have put him in that situation." Armstrong - who came into the game leading the nation in passing yards per game, averaging 426 per contest - completed 25 of 44 passes for the Cavaliers (3-2, 1-2 Atlan tic Coast Conference). Wayne Taulapapa and Mike Hollins had rushing touchdowns for Virginia and Miami native Mendy Alonso came up with a sack for a safety for the Cavaliers in the first quarter, two points that loomed very large at the end. Brennan Armstrong's first season as Virginia's starting quarterback opened slowly. Thanks to a strong second half, the Cavaliers' signal caller landed on the preseason 2021 Maxwell Award watch list. The Maxwell Award is given annually to college football 's top player. The watch list was announced Monday, and Armstrong is one of eight ACC quarterbacks to make the list. A total of 80 players appear on the watch list, with 13 coming from the ACC.The left-handed quarterback made some impressive plays against Duke, Clemson and N.C. Brennan Armstrong threw for 383 yards and four touchdowns and Virginia beat Abilene Christian 55-15 on Saturday night. Armstrong completed just 16 passes, but the scoring throws covered 28 yards to Tony Poljan, 90 yards to Lavel Davis Jr., 56 yards to Ke ytaon Thompson and 52 yards to Ra'Shaun Henry as the Cavaliers made quick work of their Southland Conference foe. The Wildcats (1-5), who have had two games canceled because their scheduled opponents had coronavirus-related issues, were a late addition t o Virginia's schedule when other nonconference options fell through, and they were clearly overmatched. The Cavaliers (4-4) started slowly, but a 33-yard run by Armstrong got their offense untracked, and his 28-yard pass to Poljan got them on the b oard late in the first quarter. They ended the quarter with Armstrong hitting Davis over the middle, and the 6-foot-7 freshman outran cornerback Christopher Satterfield for the 90-yard score. Shane Simpson scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the second qu arter, the second to cap a 64-yard drive that used the last 30 seconds of the half. He finished 19 of 31 for 150 yards and also ran 13 times for 20 yards. - Virginia/AP College Football

Brennan Armstrong ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and Virginia beat Louisville 31-17 on Saturday in a game that was pushed back a week by a COVID-19 outbreak among the Cardinals. Armstrong scored on runs of 8 and 9 yards, the latter with 4: 29 remaining to give Virginia (3-4, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) a two-score cushion. He also hit Lavel Davis Jr. with a 9-yard scoring pass that gave the Cavaliers a 21-10 lead in the third quarter.Quarterback Malik Cunningham gave the Cavalier s fits all day as he ran for a career-high 197 yards for the Cardinals (2-6, 1-6), but his first-quarter interception was returned 85 yards for a touchdown by Noah Taylor and he had the ball ripped out of his hands by Nick Grant at the end of 27-yard run , setting up Armstrong's second rushing score. The Cardinals were without seven players, but did not detail if any of the missing were COVID-related. Cunningham, who ran 20 times, was 13 for 21 throwing the ball for 161 yards. In the team's 40-23 loss to Wake Forest, which Armstrong missed with a concussion, the offense lacked consistency at the quarterback position. As a passer, runner and leader, Armstrong brings all three when he's under center. "Brennan Armstrong, the way that he led this team today was just ridiculous," running back Wayne Taulapapa said after Saturday's win. With Armstrong spearheading the charge, Taulapapa believes more offensive fireworks sit on the horizon. UVa scored a season-high in points Saturday, scoring its most points against a top-25 team since dropping 48 on West Virginia in the 2002 Continental Tire Bowl. It's the first time UVa surpassed 40 points in an ACC game since a 48-14 victory over Duke last October. "I think this is the offense tha t we truly are," Taulapapa said. "We just got to show it every game." A healthy Armstrong remains critical for UVa's offensive hopes. His status moving forward dramatically affects the team's chances at ending the fall with a winning record. When he's on the field, the Cavaliers play their best football. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

With his team's lead dwindling and his defense getting weary, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall knew an extended drive might be just what the Cavaliers needed to hang on against No. 15 North Carolina's high-octane offense. A 15-play drive that took more t han nine minutes off the clock and ended with a field goal gave the Cavaliers a 44-34 lead, which proved to be just enough. Virginia held on to snap a four-game skid, beating the Tar Heels 44-41 on Saturday night. The drive reached the Tar Heels' 10 befo re a third-down sack forced Virginia to settle for Brian Delaney's 35-yard field goal.Brennan Armstrong threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, and Virginia scored 28 consecutive points before the exciting finish to its fourth straight win over the Tar Heels. Armstrong hit Shane Simpson for 71 yards, Ra'Shaun Henry for 18 and Tony Poljan for 17, the latter giving the Cavaliers (2-4, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) a 41-20 lead with 5:34 left in the third quarter. Two quick North Carolina t ouchdowns then made it interesting. The Tar Heels (4-2, 4-2) rallied behind a fantastic performance from quarterback Sam Howell and receiver Dyami Brown. The pair hooked up for three of Howell's four touchdown passes, covering 54, 10 and 13 yards, the la st two with 51 seconds left in the third quarter and then with 13:09 left in the game. - AP College Football

Starting quarterback Brennan Armstrong is day-to-day for the Cavaliers after suffering a concussion Saturday against N.C. State. There's a chance he plays Saturday, but it's no guarantee. Should he miss the game, Lindell Stone will receive the starting n od. Stone completed 30 of his 54 passes Saturday in relief of Armstrong, throwing for 240 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Mississippi State transfer Keytaon Thompson is expected to remain at wide receiver for the time being. "Very, very earl y on, he had a shoulder injury that was aggravated," Mendenhall said of Thompson's fall camp performance. "That really precluded him from being able to play that position effectively at that time." The Cavaliers want Thompson, who is an exceptional athle te, on the field, so he made the move to wide receiver while dealing with shoulder pain. It appears he'll remain there with Stone acting as the primary backup for the Wahoos should Armstrong miss time. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Despite starting the game 1-for-8, Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong developed into a rhythm. He finished the game completing 24 of his 43 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns. He also tossed a pair of interceptions. On the ground, Armstrong ra n hard. The quarterback carried the ball 22 times for 89 yards, showing a willingness to rush the ball to pick up first downs for the Wahoos. "I knew coming into the game, just don't be afraid to tuck and run it," Armstrong said. "I was ready mindset wis e to go do that."In just his second collegiate start, Armstrong went into Death Valley and helped guide an offensive attack to more than 400 yards. Since the start of last season, the only other quarterbacks to help an offense surpass 400 total ya rds against Clemson are Justin Fields of Ohio State and 2020 NFL Draft No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow, who played collegiately at LSU. "He did amazing," Mendenhall said. "Brennan is tough mentally and physically. The stage wasn't too big, the team wasn't too good. I was really pleased with his mindset, his execution, his leadership. He did a really nice job." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong has only started one game in his college career, but Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has seen enough to compare him to an all-time great. The sophomore completed 24 of 45 passes for 269 yards against the Blue Devils, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Armstrong also rushed for 47 yards and a score. "He's a challenge. He's a problem. He's a really g ood player," Swinney said. "He looks like a young Steve Young out there. Lefty, crafty, creative, extends plays, tough runner, really good size, accurate thrower, really has no fear. Puts the ball up and trusts his guys to make competitive plays." | | | | |
