 Tyler Harrell, Miami, Player News

  01/16/23 - WR Tyler HarrellrSr/2024, Miami, 6-0, 193 (DS#55 WR) + More +

Alabama wide receiver Tyler Harrell entered the NCAA transfer portal on Saturday, he announced on Twitter. Harrell has a sixth season of eligibility available for 2023 after transferring last year to Alabama from Louisville, where he played his first four seasons from 2018-21. Billed for his speed after averaging 29.1 yards and scoring six touchdowns on his 18 catches in 2021, Harrell arrived at Alabama with high expectations similar to the other four players the Tide added through the transfer portal last offseason. But Harrell never materialized into the explosive receiving option Alabama desired. He suffered a foot injury during preseason camp that lingered into October and impacted his ability to see the field.

"It was definitely a learning experience for me, coming from the SEC from the ACC," Harrell said in the locker room after last month's Sugar Bowl, the only time he was available to speak to reporters while at Alabama. "My expectation was high hopes, but unfortunately when I injured myself, it kind of set me back a little bit, and kind of lingered throughout the season. I tried to play through it. It just wasn't clicking, for real." Harrell made his debut late in a blowout Oct. 22 win over Mississippi State, then appeared briefly in four other regular-season games. At one point in November, Nick Saban said Harrell was healthy and expressed how Alabama needed to find ways to use his speed. But that never happened, and Harrell finished with two catches for 18 yards. - Birmingham News

Alabama football receiver Tyler Harrell has entered the transfer portal, he announced Saturday. Harrell transferred to the Crimson Tide from Louisville ahead of the 2022 season but played sparingly as he dealt with a foot injury at times during the season. He is the fifth Alabama receiver to enter the transfer portal this season.

Harrell didn't see the field until the Mississippi State game in late October. In that game, he saw six snaps and caught one pass for 12 yards. Over the course of the season, he received 33 snaps per Pro Football Focus. Harrell finished the year with two receptions for 18 yards. Harrell's addition was met with optimism considering the speed he was known to bring. At the Louisville Pro Day, he was hand-timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.19 seconds and officially clocked at 4.24. The record at the NFL Combine is 4.22. - The Tuscaloosa News

In the age of the NCAA transfer portal essentially serving as college football's free agency, expectations will be high any time a team pursues and adds a player from outside of its program. That was the case last offseason when Alabama picked up Louisville wide receiver Tyler Harrell and LSU cornerback Eli Ricks from the portal, signaling both could play big roles in 2022. For both players and especially Harrell, it never fully came together. Harrell suffered a foot injury in the preseason that kept him out until midseason, and his playing time was scarce after that. Ricks remained on the sideline until he earned a starting role in October, then missed time in November because of a concussion.

Ricks, a junior, and Harrell, a fifth-year senior, both addressed their futures after Saturday's Sugar Bowl, which requires its postgame locker room to be open to reporters. It was the first time either had been allowed to speak to reporters since arriving at Alabama. The question was posed to both: will they return in 2023? "Still debating," Harrell responded. "We're gonna see." "I'm gonna speak to my coach first. I'm about to speak to him right now actually," Ricks answered. "So we'll know pretty soon. We'll know by the next coming days - today or tomorrow, probably." - Birmingham News

The long-awaited debut of Tyler Harrell with Alabama football didn't come with much fanfare. He checked into the Mississippi State game late in the second half with the Crimson Tide holding a sizable lead. Harrell saw six snaps and caught one pass for 12 yards. Harrell, the transfer receiver from Louisville, started the season dealing with a lower-body injury. "It's unfortunate the guy missed a lot of time because of an injury," Nick Saban said Monday at the Monday Morning Quarterback Club. "He is making a lot of progress. He does offer something with his speed. That is always something that can benefit you on offense. Want him to continue to improve and hopefully we can create roles for him down the road here that is going to be effective for him and for us."

His debut has been anticipated because of the speed Saban mentioned. Harrell averaged a whopping 29.1 yards per catch in 2021 with Louisville as he caught 18 passes for 523 yards and six touchdowns. The speed was on full display when Harrell ran a 4.24 40-yard dash at Louisville's pro day. That's not far off the NFL Combine record, which is 4.22. This year, Alabama hasn't had a player scare defenses with speed like Jameson Williams did a year ago as he caught 79 receptions for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns. - Montgomery Advertiser

Among the five Power 5 transfers Alabama landed, all but one have appeared in game action to date. The only who has yet to see the field is Tyler Harrell, a receiver who came from Louisville over the summer. So what's the latest on the speedy senior? Nick Saban was asked about his status on Wednesday's SEC media teleconference. "Yeah, he's been practicing and he actually was available for the last game," Saban said. "He's getting more and more reps, more and more comfortable with what he's doing. And there's the possibility he's getting to the point where we can get to use him some." Saban on Aug. 24 said Harrell was dealing with a sprained foot that limited his reps but was starting to see more practice time leading up to the season opener.

Harrell didn't dress for the first few games. "Look I'm not giving specific details on everybody's injuries but he was out," Saban said when asked Wednesday if the foot injury sidelined him the first seven games. "So what makes the difference?" Harrell was listed on the travel roster for the first time at Tennessee but didn't appear in the game. He warmed up before the Sept. 24 home date with Vanderbilt but didn't make the trip a week later to Arkansas. - Birmingham News

During his appearance on the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday, Nick Saban provided an update on injured receiver Tyler Harrell, stating the Louisville transfer is still dealing with a sprained foot and will not be available for Saturday's 3 p.m. CT kickoff against Louisiana Monroe inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. "He has not been able to practice this week," Saban said. "He will not play in this game. He's kind of day-to-day with this foot [injury] that he has. Hopefully, he'll be back sometime soon." Harrell has yet to make his Alabama debut since joining the team this offseason.

He was seen in a walking boot before the season opener against Utah State on Sept. 3 and did not make the trip to Texas with the team last weekend. Harrell led Louisville averaging 29.06 yards per catch last season, pulling in 18 receptions for 523 yards and a team-high six touchdowns. According to Louisville Report, Cardinals head coach Scott Satterfield said the 6-foot, 194-pound receiver recorded a hand-timed 4.19 time in the 40-yard dash last offseason. - Rivals Alabama

One of the great mysteries of the 2022 Alabama football puzzle comes at the receiver position. With so much of last season's production in the NFL, there will clearly be new faces on the business end of Bryce Young's passes this fall. How that looks come September is the question though early reviews are in after a few days of practice in Tuscaloosa. And Nick Saban was candid in discussing the two high-profile transfers who arrived since the season ended in January. Former Georgia receiver Jermaine Burton "has played with the most consistency" at his position while noting he was there for spring practice as well.

Former Louisville speedster Tyler Harrell is a newer arrival. "Tyler has been sort of in and out a little bit to this point," Saban said Sunday morning. "He has been able to practice on a daily basis but not 100%. I do think that he has shown that he has a lot of ability. We just need to get it channeled in the right direction so that we can use him in a way that's going to be most productive for him and for us." Of course, this is one perspective and Harrell isn't available to comment as a transfer who has yet to appear in a game. Saban often uses that wording when challenging an experienced player. And Saban's also made it clear he doesn't pursue transfers unless he sees a role with considerable playing time with Jameson Williams as the best recent example. - Birmingham News

James Hardwick was in Bradenton, Florida when he first witnessed the speed of Tyler Harrell. Harrell was a sophomore at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, but he caught the attention of Hardwick at the 2016 state track meet. Coaching for another school, Hardwick watched Harrell grab the baton from a relay teammate and rocket past other runners. "I saw a young man and I said, "God, let me go ahead and get a chance to work with this guy," Hardwick said, "and see what we can do." Hardwick was hired to coach sprinters at Columbus the next season. Hardwick said Harrell wasn't the only reason he joined but the opportunity to coach him was certainly part of it. "He can run," Hardwick said. "I'm not exaggerating. I'm not giving you a bunch of bull. He can move."

The numbers back it up. At the Louisville pro day, he was hand-timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.19 seconds and officially clocked at 4.24. The record at the NFL combine is 4.22. Hardwick said in their discussions every week that he and Harrell talk about wanting him to be one of the fastest in the 40. "We want to run low 4.1s," Hardwick said. "That's our goal." Finish with an official time in that range, and Hardwick will be the first of many in Harrell's career lining up to get a chance to work with the speedster. "He wants to catch some touchdowns from Bryce Young, and carry the legend the receivers have built through the years," Hardwick said. "He wants to be the next great receiver to come through Alabama." - Montgomery Advertiser

After perhaps the most explosive word war in recent memory, it's easy to forget the previous controversy. Back on May 5, a quote in a 247Sports story from Louisville coach Scott Satterfield implied some funny business when receiver Tyler Harrell transferred to Alabama. Nick Saban denied any tampering occurred when asked to respond to Satterfield's remarks at last Wednesday's Regions Tradition Pro-Am in Birmingham. Now, an interview with Satterfield Published Friday morning in the (Louisville) Courier Journal added the next chapter in the saga. "I didn't call Coach Saban out," Satterfield told the Courier Journal. "I'm talking about generalities, talking common sense here. When a guy gets in the transfer portal and a couple days later he announces where he's going, what's going on?"

The Harrell transfer story began when he entered the portal April 12. The Louisville 247Sports site reported the same day the speedy receiver was expected to land at Alabama. Ten days later, he officially committed to the Crimson Tide. That led to the Satterfield tampering quote to 247Sports on May 5 which received plenty of attention in the college football world. "I think it's not only (Harrell), it's happened before here," Satterfield told 247Sports. "Last year we had a few guys that jumped into the portal and the next day they're announcing where they're going. You can look at that and know that something went on before they were in the portal." - Birmingham News

Alabama coach Nick Saban on Wednesday denied that his program had contact with Louisville transfer Tyler Harrell before the wide receiver entered the NCAA transfer portal last month, committing 10 days later to join the Tide. "We don't tamper with anybody, so I don't know about anything or anybody that tampered with him," Saban said Wednesday in Hoover before participating in the Regions Tradition Pro-Am.

"I think it's not only him, it's happened before here," Satterfield told the website when asked about Harrell. "Last year we had a few guys that jumped into the portal and the next day they're announcing where they're going. You can look at that and know that something went on before they were in the portal." Harrell entered the transfer portal April 12. The same day, 247 Sports cited three sources in reporting, "the expectation is that Harrell will transfer to Alabama." Harrell visited Alabama the following weekend for its spring game, then committed the ensuing Friday in an Instagram post. Alabama has not yet added Harrell to its online roster and the school does not formally announce incoming transfers. - Birmingham News

Louisville head football coach Scott Satterfield told 247Sports he believes tampering took place with receiver Tyler Harrell, who entered the portal and committed to Alabama. The in-depth piece examines one the of biggest unintended consequences of the transfer portal: Tampering. Another word being used for the back-channeling to get a player from another program's roster is poaching.

Such is the case with Louisville and receiver Tyler Harrell, at least that's what Satterfield said. Satterfield "believes it occurred," the report states, but, there is nothing he can prove. "I think it's not only him, it's happened before here," Satterfield told 247Sports. "Last year, we had a few guys that jumped into the portal and the next day they're announcing where they're going.   Alabama went back to the portal for receiver talent, and for a second straight year, it may have landed one of the fastest receivers in the sport. Tyler Harrell, formerly of Louisville, committed to the Crimson Tide on Friday. He joins former Georgia receiver Jermaine Burton as incoming transfers but likely compares more to last year's arrival, Jameson Williams. Like the former Buckeye, Harrell will bring game-changing speed to Bryce Young's menu of targets. The 6-foot, 197-pounder was reportedly clocked running a 4.24 in the 40 at last spring's pro day in Louisville.

Harrell was a three-star prospect coming out of Columbus High School in Miami. He was rated 135th by 247Sports among receivers in the 2018 class that also included No. 5 Jaylen Waddle. Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Cincinnati and East Carolina were among the top contenders in his first recruitment. His impact at Louisville was minimal early on, redshirting his freshman season after playing in two games. A year later, he played in just two games, none in 2020 before having a breakout season last fall. Harrell caught 18 passes for 523 yards with six touchdowns in 2021, following that up with an impressive spring. - Birmingham News

  07/28/21 - WR Tyler HarrellrSr/2024, Miami, 6-0, 193 (DS#55 WR) + More +

Louisville football has a major question mark entering fall camp: Who is going to step up at wide receiver? With Tutu Atwell and Dez Fitzpatrick gone to the NFL, there's a major hole of production in the Cardinals' passing game. A hole that amounted to 1,458 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Likely replacements are Justin Marshall, Braden Smith, Jordan Watkins and Shai Werts, among others. Leaving the Wake Forest game on Dec. 12, those were the names you heard the most heading into the offseason. And those are still the players expected to contribute this season with Marshall starting for a second straight year and Smith set to take Atwell's slot receiver role. But Tyler Harrell walked off the field against Wake Forest, fresh off his first season at Louisville without a catch or snap, and knew he had work to do. There was an opportunity in front of the speedy receiver from Miami, Florida, to jump into the wide receiving corps.

That was all the motivation he needed. "Knowing somebody has to step up so you're going to work hard every second of every hour to improve yourself to perform," Harrell said. Since that game, he's surprised nearly every coach at Louisville not just with his speed (which was clocked at 4.24 seconds and 4.19 seconds, hand time, in the 40-yard dash), but also with just his overall improvement. It's no surprise to himself, though, because Harrell has been focused on the smallest details on his game this offseason, ready to make a difference. - Courier Journal
