  08/07/22 - QB Quincy PattersonrSr/2024, Temple, 6-3, 242 (DS#64 QB) + More +

Temple quarterback Quincy Patterson, a transfer from North Dakota State whom coach Stan Drayton calls a natural leader, has been making a name for himself early in camp. Offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf sees Patterson as a player who can run well and has good size at 6-foot-3, 235 pounds. "You see a real team player," Langsdorf said. "Doing whatever he needs to do to help the team win...He just has a really good personality, very open and helpful to the guys. He's a team player all the way." Langsdorf added that a starter from last season, D'Wan Mathis, has improved his throwing accuracy. The quarterback competition will continue. - Philadelphia Inquirer

Temple has set itself up for an intriguing preseason quarterback competition. Quincy Patterson committed to the Owls on May 18, arriving at what he says will be his last stop with two years of eligibility remaining. His final two choices were Temple and Troy. "I probably talked to 40 schools and I just told them all the same thing," Patterson told The Inquirer. "They're all like, 'What do you want?' I said, 'I just want a chance to compete." First-year coach Stan Drayton said during spring practice that Temple could look to the transfer portal to add some competition at quarterback. Patterson will duke it out with returning starter D'Wan Mathis, who transferred from Georgia for the starting job in December 2020. Patterson played in 11 games over three seasons at Virginia Tech (2018-20). He left feeling as if there wasn't much more he could do to sniff a starting spot in Blacksburg, Va., so he transferred to North Dakota State in December 2020.

The 6-foot-3, 242-pound quarterback went 7-0 as a starter in his lone season before suffering an injury to the AC joint in his throwing shoulder. Patterson only saw the field in run packages thereafter, as backup Cam Miller took over duties under center. Miller led the Bison to an FCS national championship, leaving Patterson feeling some deja vĂş. He didn't see a path to a legitimate quarterback competition. There was plenty of open dialogue about the situation, but Patterson understood that North Dakota State was unlikely to bench its championship quarterback. The day after Patterson entered the transfer portal for a second time on May 10, he got a call from Temple's wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Jafar Williams, who held a similar position while they were both at Virginia Tech. - Philadelphia Inquirer

Former Virginia Tech quarterback Quincy Patterson will transfer to Temple for the 2022 season, according to ESPN. It is the second transfer in as many years for Patterson, who played this past season at North Dakota State after beginning his college career with the Hokies in 2018. The decision to enter the transfer portal came after Patterson led the Bison to a 7-0 record as the starter this past season before suffering an injury. The dual-threat quarterback still finished with 13 total touchdowns, seven of which came on the ground. During his time with Virginia Tech, he appeared in 11 games from 2018-20, making one start.

His most memorable moment with the Hokies came against North Carolina that season when he scored the game-winning two-point conversion to end the longest game in ACC history, which spanned six overtimes. "It's a shot to be the best me I can be, in a sense" Patterson said regarding his transfer to Temple. "I told all the coaches, I didn't need and guarantees (to start). I just wanted a shot and take it from there and prove what I can do. I know a lot of people know what I can do. I just have to go do it." A former four-star recruit, Patterson ranked as the No. 21 quarterback and No. 270 overall player in the 2018 class according to On3 Consensus. He chose to attend Virginia Tech over offers from Mississippi State, North Carolina, Penn State and others. - On3.com

Quincy Patterson rushed for North Dakota State's only touchdown late in the game and the Bison used that score and three field goals by Jake Reinholz to beat North Dakota 16-10 on Saturday in a Missouri Valley Football Conference opener. Patterson's 3-yard score on third-and-goal completed a 58-yard drive that took 4 1/2 minutes off the clock. Reinholz's final field goal, a 30-yarder, gave the Bison (4-0, 1-0) the lead late in the third quarter. It came after the Fighting Hawks (2-2, 0-1) turned the ball over on downs at their own 20. They also failed on another fourth-down conversion at the NDSU 42, where the Bison began their final scoring drive.

North Dakota kicked a field goal with 16 seconds left but couldn't recover an onside kick. The victory kept the Bison, fifth-ranked in the FCS coaches poll, perfect in their four Division I meetings with No. 11 North Dakota in a rivalry that dates to 1894. This was the 114th meeting with the Bison winning for the first time in Grand Forks since 1997. The loss snapped a 12-game home winning streak for the Hawks, which had been the third-longest streak in the FCS. Tommy Schuster threw a 30-yard pass to Bo Belquist for North Dakota's only touchdown. - North Dakota State/AP College Football

Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente announced that backup quarterback Quincy Patterson has entered the transfer portal. The only other player to enter the transfer portal during the off week was receiver Darryle Simmons. Fuente attributed the timing of Patterson's decision - Tech has two games left to go in the regular season - to a hand injury he suffered against Pittsburgh. Patterson couldn't grip a football last week and likely wouldn't have been available to play this week against Clemson.

While Fuente normally doesn't say much about players leaving the program, he went out of his way to praise Patterson on Monday before taking any questions. "I just want to publicly thank Quincy for his time here," Fuente said. "Just a fantastic young man. He played a vital role in our football team. Quincy knows how I feel about him and his folks. We stand ready to help him in anyway we can moving forward. I'm sure when the news hits his phone will be blowing up with a lot of people trying to find out about him and our phones will be blowing up too. We'll have nothing but great things to say about him moving forward. I look forward to watching him play and watching him get on the field on a more consistent basis." - Roanoke Times

Virginia Tech backup quarterback Quincy Patterson has decided to transfer. Coach Justin Fuente made the announcement Monday, shortly before Patterson confirmed his decision in a Twitter post. "Through thought, prayer and countless discussions with my parents and other important people in my life, I felt it was in my best interest to enter my name in the transfer portal," Patterson said in the tweet. "Despite the weird timing, my decision wasn’t made hastily." Fuente said he and Patterson have had numerous conversations with the redshirt sophomore about his future. "I just want to publicly thank Quincy for his time here. Just a fantastic young man," Fuente said Monday. "He played a vital role in our football team. Quincy knows how I feel about him and his folks. We stand ready to help him in any way we can moving forward." He said Patterson wants a chance to play more, and is certain he will have numerous suitors. - AP College Football

Quincy Patterson II came off the bench to throw two touchdown passes and run for another score, leading No. 20 Virginia Tech to a 45-24 victory over NC State on Saturday night. Despite playing without 23 players and four coaches because of coronavirus issues and injuries - including starting quarterback Hendon Hooker - the Hokies (1-0, 1-0 ACC) started quickly in a season opener delayed two weeks because of two COVID-related postponements. Virginia Tech took advantage of an NC State defense missing three starters who were out with injuries,by speeding to a 17-0 lead.

Patterson, the Hokies' No. 3 quarterback, entered the game in the second quarter after starter Braxton Burmeister left with a hand injury. Patterson threw touchdown passes of 15 yards to Tayvion Robinson and 16 yards to James Mitchell on the Hokies' final two possessions of the first half. He also scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Khalil Herbert ran for 104 yards and a score for Virginia Tech, which rushed for 315 yards. Devin Leary threw for 165 yards and a score for the Wolfpack (1-1, 1-1). - Virginia Tech/AP College Football

Fans who attended the Virginia Tech-North Carolina game certainly got their money's worth Saturday evening. The Hokies themselves actually got much, much more. In a game that took six overtimes and more than four hours to play, Virginia Tech finally put away the Tar Heels when third-team quarterback Quincy Patterson's two-point conversion run in the sixth overtime propelled the Hokies to a wild 43-41 victory in the longest game in ACC history. The victory enabled the Hokies (5-2, 2-2 ACC) to keep pace in the race for the ACC's Coastal Division crown and kept the Tar Heels (3-4, 2-2) from jumping to the top of the division.

"I'm just proud of those kids," Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente said. "It goes back to a couple of weeks ago (after a 45-10 loss to Duke), and we had to look ourselves in the mirror and talk about how we would handle tough situations. We were certainly in our fair share of them tonight. If they had made one more field goal or whatever, I would still feel the same way about our team. If it had gone another way, I still would've been up here talking about how proud I am of our guys' ability to battle." Both teams squandered opportunities to win in earlier overtime periods, as Virginia Tech kicker Brian Johnson missed game-winning attempts from 41 and 42 yards and North Carolina kicker Noah Ruggles missed from 35 yards and had a 44-yard attempt blocked. The game marked the debut of college football's new overtime rules, which now call for going for two points after the fourth overtime. In the fifth overtime, Virginia Tech had the ball first, but Patterson's pass to Damon Hazelton was broken up by the Tar Heels' Storm Duck, giving the Tar Heels an opportunity to win the game. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football
