Calvin Hart Jr., Oregon State, Player News

The Illinois football defense received yet another piece of good news Tuesday, following plenty of it the day prior. Linebacker Calvin Hart Jr. is returning for the Illini's 2023 season, which will be his third in Champaign-Urbana and his sixth college football campaign overall. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound native of Florida is the third defensive player to announce this week that he's remaining with coach Bret Bielema's program for the upcoming season. Defensive linemen Johnny Newton and Keith Randolph Jr. each did the same on Monday.

Hart is a former North Carolina State transfer who played in 12 of the Illini's 13 games during the 2022 schedule, including the ReliaQuest Bowl versus Mississippi State. Hart amassed 22 tackles, 1 1/2 tackles for loss and 1/2 sack after being named to the preseason watch list for the Dick Butkus Award, given annually to the nation's top linebacker. - News Gazette Tribune

Calvin Hart Jr. played roughly 31/2 quarters in his debut season at Illinois before suffering what would be a season-ending knee injury in the fourth quarter of the Illini's season-opening win against Nebraska. But what a 31/2 quarters it was for the former North Carolina State product. Hart finished his one and only game so far in orange and blue with six tackles, 11/2 tackles for loss, one sack and one fumble recovery for a touchdown. Simple math says he would have put up roughly 82 tackles and 201/2 tackles for loss in a full season and scored a dozen touchdowns. (OK, maybe not, but it was an impressive single game).

That Hart was able to return this spring healthy after knee surgery last fall was a good sign. That speedy recovery, and the fact he's full go for the Aug. 27 opener against Wyoming, is important. There's some intriguing depth at inside linebacker, but not all that much experience. Before the youth movement hits, Illinois will have to rely on Hart as one of three inside 'backers - Tarique Barnes and Isaac Darkangelo the other - to anchor the middle of coordinator Ryan Walters' defense. - News Gazette Tribune

As Bret Bielema continues to fill out his coaching staff, he's also active in the recruiting world. He got his first high school commitment on Tuesday, landing three-start athlete Joshua McCray for the Class of 2021. Less than an hour after that, linebacker Calvin "C.J." Hart Jr. announced he was transferring from North Carolina State. Hart addresses an immediate position of need for the Illini. He's 6-foot-1, 235-pound redshirt sophomore who recorded 53 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss and three sacks in two seasons for North Carolina State. He has three years of eligibility remaining. In 10 games in 2020, he had 18 tackles, 3.0 tackles for a loss, 2.0 sacks and two forced fumbles. - Herald-Review Times
