Last season, Indiana junior wide receiver Miles Marshall proved to himself he could play and produce at the Big Ten level. The 6-foot-4, 212-pounder had 19 catches for 290 yards and a touchdown as IU's third starting receiver with Ty Fryfogle and Whop Ph ilyor. Marshall often alternated with Philyor playing the slot, while lining up outside as well. "I come into this year with a whole lot of confidence," Marshall said. "Knowing I can do it, knowing I can get even better than what I did last year." With P hilyor gone and Fryfolge, the reigning Big Ten receiver of the year, back, Marshall now finds himself as the No. 2 receiver on IU's depth chart. But Marshall said he's pushing himself to be the best receiver on the field each day in practice."I ho pe he embraces being a No. 1 receiver because, ultimately, Ty made a bunch of plays, so Ty is not going to sneak up on anybody," IU receivers coach Grant Heard said. Heard expects many defenses to follow the blueprint of Ole Miss in the Outback Bowl, whi ch was to take Fryfogle away and force IU's other receivers to step up and make plays. "We have to make sure we have players across from them that can make plays and feel like they are the first option on every route and have that mindset so when the bal l comes to them they are not surprised," Heard said. Redshirt junior receiver Miles Marshall has made steady progress in each of his first two active seasons at Indiana. This season, Marshall could take on an even more significant role in IU's offense. With senior Whop Philyor departed for the NFL draft, M arshall will enter the 2021 season as the second-most experienced receiver on the roster, behind just senior Ty Fryfogle. "I hope my role increases, but that's up to me," Marshall said following IU's ninth spring practice Tuesday. "I've got to keep worki ng hard. I've got to keep getting faster. I've got to work on my hands. I've got to work on my releases, and I've got to become a better player to do the things I want to do. My goal is to end up in the NFL, so I've got a couple of more years left to ach ieve that goal." Marshall has posted 35 catches for 486 yards and two TDs in his career, including 19 catches for 290 yards and one TD last season. Marshall's highlight catch last year was a 68-yard grab on a fly route against Big Ten champion Ohio State .
