Ricky Rahne finally shared some personnel news Monday, and it wasn't good. The Old Dominion coach said tight end Zack Kuntz will miss the rest of the season with an undisclosed injury. Kuntz, a 6-foot-8, 251-pound NFL prospect who transferred from Penn S tate, hasn't played since leaving three plays into an Oct. 1 loss to Liberty with what appeared to be a right knee injury, though Rahne declined to confirm that. Rahne did say that Kuntz would have surgery "soon." "It won't be anything that's going to la st very long or anything like that," Rahne said. "But he was trying to see how long he could go and see if he could rehab it and get back, and it just wasn't something that could happen." A native of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, Kuntz caught 12 passes for 14 4 yards and two touchdowns in five games before the injury.Last season as a sophomore, Kuntz led the Monarchs and was second in the country among tight ends with 73 receptions. With 692 receiving yards and five touchdowns, he was named first-team All-Conference USA. Rahne said he and his players had known for a while that Kuntz was out for the season. That didn't soften the blow for those closest to him. "Even outside of the facility, off the field, Zack's one of my guys," said junior offensive t ackle Leroy Thomas. "So I know the news was definitely hard for him. We're going to be there for him and make sure his spirits are up. Anything he needs, he knows I'm there for him." - The Virginian Pilot

Zack Kuntz and R'Tarriun Johnson exchanged a knowing glance before the question was even finished, as if to wonder what took so long. What effect, the Old Dominion football players were asked, does being picked to finish dead last in the Sun Belt's East Division even have? Kuntz, a junior tight end, spoke first. "With the transfer portal and how things are different, it honestly makes an analyst's job harder and harder, because it's hard to see how if a kid were to transfer from one place to another, ho w their impact's going to be," he said. "If anything, it puts a larger chip on our shoulder, and we'll take that going into the season."In the end, it was a classic answer to a tired but obligatory preseason question. The Monarchs this week were i ndeed picked to finish seventh in the new seven-team division despite last season's appearance in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Appalachian State, a Sun Belt powerhouse, was picked to win the division, which Monarchs coach Ricky Rahne called "the toughest Group of Five division in college football." Even James Madison, which is making the jump from FCS to FBS this season, was picked a spot ahead of ODU. - The Virginian Pilot

The end of the workweek marked the start of a new era for Old Dominion. Friday was the Monarchs' first day as official members of the Sun Belt Conference after leaving Conference USA a year early. ODU joins the Sun Belt in all sports the conference offer s, including baseball, men's basketball, football, men's soccer, men's golf, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's golf, women's soccer, women's tennis and volleyball. James Madison, Southern Miss and Marshall also joined the Sun Belt on Friday, maki ng the league a 14-member conference. The four schools join the 10 standing members: Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Louisiana, Louisiana Monroe, South Alabama, Texas State and Troy.ODU will be in the Sun Belt East Division with Marshall, JMU, Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern and Georgia State. The Sun Belt, ODU officials have said, is a more geographically palatable league than C-USA, which ranged as far west as El Paso, Texas. The Sun Belt offers ODU more bus trips and fewer flights, which will save the athletic department significant revenue. The Sun Belt's members are contained to 10 contiguous states. - The Virginian Pilot

Penn State redshirt sophomore tight end Zack Kuntz entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer on Wednesday afternoon, according to 247Sports. Kuntz, a former four-star recruit in the Class of 2018, according to 247Sports, appeared in seven games for the Nittany Lions last season but didn't catch a single pass. He was listed second on the depth chart, along with freshman tight end Theo Johnson, toward the end of the year after star redshirt junior tight end Pat Freiermuth underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in November. The 6-foot-7, 258-pound Camp Hill native arrived at Penn State as the eighth-best player in the Nittany Lions' sixth-ranked 2018 recruiting class. Kuntz came in with Freiermuth and was the higher-rated player of the duo. In his three years with the program, Kuntz appeared in 21 games, totaling three receptions for 26 yards. - Centre Times

During a video conference call with media Wednesday, Penn State tight end Zack Kuntz made a grandiose statement about his teammates at his position. "I think we're the most talented tight end room in the country," the redshirt sophomore said. "And there' s no doubt in my mind about that." There is little doubt the player atop the Nittany Lions' tight end depth chart is one of the best in the country. But there is precious little with regard to experience on the roster after all-Big Ten honoree Pat Freier muth. So for Kuntz's declaration to carry any legitimacy, he will have to have a breakout 2020 season. The native of the Harrisburg area is prepping himself for just that."I think Pat has shown what he can do, and he can do even more," Kuntz said. "And I think it's my time to kind of show what I am made of and what I'm capable of doing." One of four four-star incoming recruits for Penn State at tight end since 2018, Kuntz has added more than 30 pounds of muscle since joining the program. And afte r the graduation of Kittanning's Nick Bowers, the Nittany Lions have a need for a No. 2 tight end to complement Freiermuth, who in only two seasons has tied the school record for touchdown catches by a tight end (15). - Tribune Review
