The Michigan football team got more good news Sunday evening, with two more players announcing their intentions to suit up against next season. Wide receiver Cornelius Johnson and linebacker Michael Barrett both said they plan to return in 2023, they announced on social media, injecting more experience (and depth) on both sides of the ball. The decisions came one day before the deadline to declare for the 2023 NFL Draft.

Barrett is set to play a sixth year at Michigan after redshirting his freshman season in 2018 and earning an additional year of eligibility for playing through the pandemic season of 2020. He was a third-team all-Big Ten pick of the coaches this year, with Barrett racking up a career-high 72 tackles (five for a loss), 3 1/2 sacks and two interceptions as a middle linebacker. The 6-foot, 233-pound graduate student was recruited to Michigan to play a hybrid linebacker/safety role, "the viper," under former coordinator Don Brown. But changes to the coaching staff and scheme meant changes for Barrett, who was retrofitted into a more traditional role. - Michigan Live

Michigan's football team will get an early jump on spring practice this year, with a start date set for Monday, Feb. 22. The date was confirmed to MLive by a team spokesman late Tuesday, an earlier-than-usual start for the Wolverines after their abbreviated 2020 season was cut short by the COVID-19 virus pandemic. Michigan, and all other college football programs, will get 15 practice dates - likely spanning the calendar through March. It's unclear whether the schedule will culminate with an open-to-the-public spring game at Michigan Stadium, as has been the case in years past. Typically, Jim Harbaugh-led Michigan teams begin spring practice in mid-March and conclude sometime in mid-to-late April, before the conclusion of the semester. Last year, in 2020, the Wolverines were set to begin on March 17 before a stay-at-home order effectively closed campus and forced players and coaches to return home. - Ann Arbor News

Michael Barrett, a former high school quarterback from Georgia who distinguished himself last season at Michigan executing two faked punts, appears to be the heir apparent at the viper position in coordinator Don Brown's defense. Khaleke Hudson, the starter at viper the last three seasons who led Michigan with 101 tackles last year, has moved on to the NFL leaving open a position he had made his own. "I've seen enough out of Michael Barrett to be excited," Brown said Thursday in a video conference call with reporters. "Runs 4.51 - that's fast - at 220 pounds. That's a good place to start. He's had a tremendous role model in Khaleke Hudson that showed him the way.

"He's worked extremely hard and has a close relationship with (linebackers) Cam McGrone, in particular, and Josh Ross. That chemistry, that camaraderie you search for that allows some groups to be exceptional I think is there." Earlier this year at the NFL combine, Hudson singled out Barrett and Anthony Solomon and said they learned from playing behind him last season. "Michigan is going to get great players with them guys," Hudson said at the combine. "They work hard every single day." - Ann Arbor News
