Ohio State is adding a veteran to its quarterback room. Tristan Gebbia, who spent five seasons at Oregon State before putting his name in the NCAA transfer portal two weeks ago, is joining the Buckeyes for his final season of eligibility. "I am excited t o get started on this new journey," he wrote in an announcement posted on Twitter on Wednesday. The expected arrival of Gebbia provides the Buckeyes with additional depth at the position with Kyle McCord and Devin Brown to compete this offseason to repla ce C.J. Stroud as their starting quarterback. Stroud, who starred for two seasons behind center and became the most efficient passer in program history, declared for the NFL draft on Monday.Gebbia has some starting experience, having started five games for the Beavers in 2019 and 2020, but had slid down the depth chart in recent seasons after tearing a hamstring. Rehabilitation from the injury sidelined him for all of 2021, and he appeared in only four games last fall. Despite losing the starting job, he was selected as a team captain for three straight seasons. Over his career with the Beavers, he completed 128 of 200 passes for 1,250 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions. - Columbus Dispatch

Oregon State quarterback Tristan Gebbia has had a change of mind regarding his football future, as the sixth-year senior put his name in the transfer portal Tuesday. Gebbia was thought to have finished his career when he played two series in OSU's Las Ve gas Bowl win over Florida on Dec. 17. Gebbia told The Oregonian/OregonLive in November that he planned to pursue a football coaching career. Gebbia heads to the transfer portal as a grad transfer.Gebbia is eligible for a seventh year if he obtains a medical redshirt. It's not known if Gebbia already has a medical redshirt or if he's currently in the process. Gebbia has a case for a medical redshirt as he missed the entire 2021 season due to a hamstring injury. Gebbia started his college career in 2017 at Nebraska, then transferred to OSU in 2018. Gebbia made his Beavers starting debut in 2019 against Oregon, throwing for 243 yards in a 24-10 loss. - The Oregonian

It appears a decision on who will start at quarterback for Oregon State in the season opener at Purdue two Saturdays from now could be put off until game week. One of the primary candidates for the spot, Tristan Gebbia, who started the first four games f or the Beavers last season, has been sidelined at practice since last week with a sore hamstring. How long he'll be out is still uncertain. That's left coach Jonathan Smith and his staff carefully weighing their options. "We talked about Tristan, g iving him a couple days to try to get that thing feeling better and he's still yet to do in regards to feeling like he can go full speed," Smith said Tuesday as he met with the media after practice, the team's 16th of fall camp. "He's getting a little li ght work, but we're really taking that day to day. He's not ready for prime time, so we've got to work with those other guys." Those others are graduate transfer Sam Noyer, Chance Nolan, a second-year player in the program who played in relief of Gebbia in 2020, and true freshman Sam Vidlak. - Gazette Times

Eight months after hamstring surgery, there was reason to wonder how loose and mobile Tristan Gebbia might be during Oregon State's preseason football camp. The fifth-year junior showed his mobility Friday, smoothly running through scramble and roll-out drills during the Beavers' opening practice. There's no one looser in camp. While the media was interviewing linebacker Jack Colletto on Saturday, Gebbia stood within eyesight trying to distract his teammate with a variety of unartful dance moves. "Trist an, could you stop?" Colletto said to his playful teammate. Gebbia has worked his way back from the gruesome hamstring injury, sustained during the final minutes of a 41-38 win over Oregon on Nov. 27, to arguably the quarterback to beat for Oregon State' s starting job. It's been a painstaking process for Gebbia, who said it wasn't until mid-July that he was able to throw and run normally during workouts."I don't feel like I missed a step out here. It might as well be Nov. 30 and I didn't get inju red, in my book," Gebbia said. The proof comes this week, as the Beavers put on pads for practice and competition intensifies. But at a minimum, Gebbia - who started OSU's first four games last season - is in the hunt to start the season opener Sept. 4 a t Purdue. Offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren believes Gebbia is close to his old form, saying "you can tell he's put in the work as far as the rehab goes. I anticipate by (Purdue) that he'll be ready to go." - The Oregonian

Oregon State quarterback Tristan Gebbia is finished for the season as the redshirt junior quarterback will have surgery on a damaged left hamstring this week. Coach Jonathan Smith didn't have details on the severity of Gebbia's injury, sustained late in the fourth quarter of Oregon State's 41-38 win over Oregon on Nov. 27. "I know it's a hamstring … (surgery) is the best course of action for him to be able to come back and play this game healthy," Smith said.Redshirt sophomore Chance Nolan, who started for Gebbia last Saturday at Utah, will take over the position for the rest of the season. Smith said freshman Ben Gulbranson is Nolan's back up. Smith was optimistic about some aspects of Nolan's performance against Utah. Nolan completed 20 of 3 8 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown, while running 13 times for 36 yards. "I thought Chance did a good job moving his feet, extending the play on some scrambles and kept drives alive," Smith said. "That's part of his game. We do anticipate him playing better in game 2, just like anybody in their first start. There's a bunch of things to learn from." - The Oregonian

The redshirt junior will have surgery on his injured hamstring later this week and miss the remainder of the 2020 campaign, Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith said Monday. "A lot we nt into a decision, but ultimately (it) is gonna be the best for his future," Smith said. "We totally support it and understand it." Chance Nolan, who made his first start for the Beavers on Saturday at Utah, will be Oregon State’s starting quarterback from here on out. It sounds as though Tristan Gebbia's status is in doubt for the Beavers' upcoming game against Utah on Saturday night. Oregon State's quarterback left the game in the closing minute of the fourth quarter during last Friday's win over rival Oregon with a left hamstring injury and did not return. "It is significantly more serious than we initially thought after the game," Beavers' coach Jonathan Smith said Monday. "We're going to gather some more information, really, today and tomorrow and we're hopeful w e can get him up to full speed by the end of the week. We'll see where that goes."Smith said Gebbia will continue to be evaluated, and he is hopeful that further testing will reveal some good news. But until those test results come out, there is n ot much the redshirt junior can do aside from receiving treatment. The injury occurred when Gebbia attempted to reach the end zone on a quarterback keeper and ended up at the bottom of a large pile of players. There was some outrage on social media when a replay angle of the play showed that Ducks' safety Verone McKinley III appeared to pull on Gebbia's leg during the pileup in an attempt to get him away from the end zone. - Gazette Times

Oregon State quarterback Tristan Gebbia passed for a touchdown, ran for a touchdown and was on the receiving end of a score in the Beavers' 31-27 victory Saturday over California at Reser Stadium. Gebbia is the first Pac-12 quarterback since 1996 to acco unt for touchdowns via the air, ground and as a receiver. Gebbia's 1-yard touchdown run with 4:30 remaining, set up by Jesiah Irish's blocked punt, gave Oregon State its final lead. California drove to the Beavers' 10 late in the fourth quarter, but on f irst-and-goal Chase Garbers' pass was tipped by Hamilcar Rashed Jr. and intercepted by fellow linebacker John McCartan. Jermar Jefferson's 65-yard run with just under a minute to go sealed the win for Oregon State (1-2, 1-2 Pacific 12), which opened the season with losses to Washington State and Washington. Jefferson ran for 196 yards, including a 75-yard jaunt on the game's first offensive play. - Oregon State/AP College Football
