Two more Miami Hurricanes began the process of entering the transfer portal Thursday, bringing to nine the number of confirmed players who are taking that step. According to a source, wide receiver Keyshawn Smith is entering the portal, a move that was e xpected. And safety Al Blades Jr. also entered the portal, which wasn't necessarily expected. Smith had 41 catches for 589 yards in 19 games during three seasons at UM, including 13 receptions for 199 yards (a 15.3 average) and two touchdown this past se ason. He was very good as a returner early this past season, returning 21 kickoffs for 641 yards (a 30.5 average) and a touchdown. But he did not play in Miami's final three games. Smith was a late addition to the 2020 class, after flipping his commitmen t from Washington State.Blades played a lot at cornerback in 2019 and 2020, starting a combined 14 games and hauling in two interceptions each of those seasons. He was limited to two games in 2021 because of injuries and played 138 snaps this past season as a backup safety. He had 91 tackles, the four picks and 14 passes defended in his five seasons at Miami. Rivals rated Blades the 59th-best player in the 2018 class. Blades, who attended Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, is the son of deceased former Miami Hurricanes star safety Al Blades Sr. and the nephew of former UM stars Bennie Blades and Brian Blades. - Miami Herald

Per a source and later confirmed by the player, UM cornerback Al Blades Jr. will miss the remainder of the season (UNC, Georgia Tech, bowl game) because of a cardiac issue. He is expected to be able to play next season. Blades said he will miss a minimum of three months with myocarditis, discovered in an MRI on his heart after going through blood work as part of COVID protocols. He said he is "looking forward to returning to the field in 2021." The junior, who missed the Duke game, has 29 tackles, seven passes defended and two interceptions in eight games this season. Couch supplanted Blades atop the depth chart - opposite DJ Ivey - hours before two UM games were postponed due to COVID-19. Blades' absence will leave UM with four scholarship cornerbacks , as was the case against Duke: Couch, Ivey and freshmen Isaiah Dunson and Marcus Clark. - Miami Herald

Miami defensive back Al Blades Jr. said Tuesday he will miss at least three months after being diagnosed with inflammation of the heart. Blades said the myocarditis diagnosis came after doctors were concerned about some bloodwork that came back while he was "going through some COVID protocols." Blades said doctors made the diagnosis after an MRI was performed. It's common for athletes to undergo cardiac exams after contracting the coronavirus as part of a return-to-play protocol — with myocarditis som ething that is often looked for in those additional tests. Miami has had several players, along with coach Manny Diaz, test positive for the virus in recent weeks. It had two games rescheduled because of those results and other complications related to c ontact tracing and possible exposure. - AP College Football
