Beanie Bishop Jr., West Virginia, Player News

Defensive back Beanie Bishop, who played in all 13 games during the 2022 season for the Gophers, announced Thursday on Twitter that he has entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. Bishop, who came to Minnesota in January of 2022 after playing four seasons at Western Kentucky, made 29 tackles, including 20 solo, and had one sack and one pass breakup for the Gophers last year.

The Louisville native had 76 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 12 passes defensed and three interceptions in 36 games at Western Kentucky. In 2021, he was named first-team All-Conference USA. Bishop will have one year of eligibility remaining. Bishop is the fourth defensive back to transfer from Minnesota since the end of the 2022 season. He joins Michael "Flip" Dixon (Rutgers), Jalen Glaze (Florida A&M) and Steven Ortiz (Massachusetts). - Minneapolis Star Tribune

The Gophers have been impressed with transfer cornerbacks Shannon "Beanie" Bishop (Western Kentucky) and Ryan Stapp (Abilene Christian) in spring ball. "Beanie jammed me up last practice," Autman-Bell said April 16. "I go against Ryan Stapp every day. Those guys are going to be ball players for the Gopher nation. I hope you guys understand and look into them more." Stapp's highlight Tuesday was an interception return for a touchdown. It came against backup quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, after Kaliakmanis beat Stapp with a long touchdown pass to Dylan Wright. Stapp had close coverage, but the 6-foot-3 receiver caught the ball over his head. Teammates on either side of the ball went wild after each big play. - Pioneer Press

NOV 8 CONFERENCE USA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WKU DB Beanie Bishop had a career performance with two interceptions – including a 43-yard pick-six – in WKU's 48-21 victory over Middle Tennessee. The two interceptions were the first two in the Louisville native's career. Bishop became only the third Conference USA defender this season with two interceptions in a game, and the first since September 18. Bishop had two of the Hilltoppers' six interceptions on the day, which set the team's FBS Era (since 2009) program record and is tied for second-most for a single game in C-USA history. Bishop returned his second interception 29 yards (to go along with the 43-yard touchdown made for a total of 72 return yards) to set up another WKU touchdown. For the game, the Hilltoppers forced the Blue Raiders into seven turnovers, while scoring 31 points off those turnovers. Bishop also added two tackles on defense and two kickoff returns for 48 yards on special teams. - Conference USA Football
