  11/28/22 - RB Tavion ThomasrJr/2023, Utah, 6-0, 237 (DS#25 RB) + More +

Tavion Thomas has played his last game at the University of Utah. Citing a toe injury suffered in the Utes' 20-17 loss at the University of Oregon, the fifth-year junior running back announced on Twitter Friday afternoon that he will end his college career early, instead opting to focus on the East-West Shrine Bowl on Feb. 2 and the NFL draft in April. The East-West Shrine Bowl, an all-star game for seniors, announced on Wednesday that Thomas had accepted an invitation. Thomas is a draft-eligible fifth-year junior, who Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham had already said earlier this month would not be returning in 2023.

Thomas will not play in Saturday's regular-season finale at Colorado (2 p.m., Pac-12 Networks), nor will he play in a bowl game or the Pac-12 championship game, should the Utes get there. "Unfortunately, I injured my toe in our previous game," Thomas said in the tweet. "Due to this, I am declaring for the NFL Draft and spending my time rehabbing and training for this next step in my football journey. "I look forward to getting back and dominating in the Shrine Game." His aunt died days before the Utes hosted San Diego State on Sept. 17. Thomas took that especially hard given his aunt raised him, his two siblings and, as Thomas later noted, a total of 13 children in his native Dayton, Ohio. As the following week unfolded and Utah began preparing to face Arizona State in Tempe on Sept. 24, Thomas, with Whittingham's support, was able to get back to Dayton for a couple of days to be with his family. What exactly transpired between his aunt's death, the quick trip to Dayton, and the Arizona State game remains unclear. - Salt Lake Tribune

  11/13/22 - RB Tavion ThomasrJr/2023, Utah, 6-0, 237 (DS#25 RB) + More +

A few weeks ago, Tavion Thomas was on the brink of losing his place on Utah's football team. Rushing for a career-high 180 yards on Saturday night proved he's all the way back. "I was just so happy to be out there with my teammates," Thomas said. "I wasn't worried about my carries, I was just worried about finishing this thing and playing with these guys." Cameron Rising threw for three touchdowns and No. 13 Utah beat Stanford 42-7 on Senior Night. Utah (8-2, 6-1 Pac-12) started slow on a below-freezing night in the shadow of the Wasatch Mountains, but scored 42 straight points after trailing 7-0 to Stanford (3-7, 1-7). Utah's defense was suffocating after the initial score while Thomas recorded his first 100-yard rushing game since the season opener at Florida and eclipsed his previous high (177) set at Stanford last year.

Thomas, who has been in and out of the lineup with personal issues, was pressed into heavy use because of injuries in the backfield. "It's been challenging but you can't run from it, you have to attack it. I've got great guys here and a great support system and they got me back slowly but surely," Thomas said. He rushed for a four-yard TD in the second quarter and a 36-yard score in the fourth - his 28th career touchdown at Utah, moving him to third on the all-time rushing TD list. "There were some bumps in the road … but I'm really grateful he continued to stick with it and fight through some of the issues he was having," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. Thomas was a 1,000-yard rusher and had 21 touchdowns last season but was away from team at times this season and missed the Washington State game. He struggled through the middle of the season but showed renewed speed and power in time for Utah's quest for a Rose Bowl return. "It was great to see Tavion in his last game at Rice-Eccles get back to his old self. I'm really proud of him and glad that he's weathered the storm," Whittingham said. - Utah/AP College Football

Running back Tavion Thomas is grateful for the year he has spent in Utah's football program. He has certainly found a home with the Utes. "I've got a lot of experience here. Everything is slowing down for me," Thomas said. "I've gained some friendships here, some good relationships here. I've learned the culture." And Utah will be counting on him heavily this season after he broke the school's single-season rushing touchdown record with 21 and also rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2021. "When you get to the NFL level, you can't get away with certain things that you can get away with in college. Your bad day could possibly be your last day. I have to train these guys to understand that you have to bring it every day." - Utah RBs coach Quinton Ganther on keeping his running backs motivated.

First-year Utah running backs coach Quinton Ganther loves the talent he's inherited, including Thomas. "The thing with me is, I'm going to try to push and get every ounce of everything they're capable of out of them," Ganther said. "I don't want any of them to get comfortable. I don't want Tavion to think he's made it and get comfortable and that he doesn't want to work. Something like that happens if the next guy up is as productive, I'm not going for it. I want it to be high competition. "When you get to the NFL level, you can't get away with certain things that you can get away with in college. Your bad day could possibly be your last day. I have to train these guys to understand that you have to bring it every day." Left tackle Braeden Daniels and the rest of the offensive line enjoys blocking for Thomas. "Having a guy like that running behind you is awesome," Daniels said. "The defenses fear you before you even play them. It's honestly great. He'll keep working and doing his thing." - Deseret News

Tavion Thomas emerged as the lead back for Utah football during the 2021 season, helping the Utes finish strong on what turned out to be a top 15 team that earned the program's first Rose Bowl appearance. While Thomas finished the season with 1,108 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns - third-most in the country - his performance once the calendar flipped to October really displayed what the 6-foot-2, 238-pounder brings to the field. Over the Utes' final nine games last season, Thomas scored 19 touchdowns - at least one per game, with back-to-back four-touchdown games. During that stretch, he also averaged 20.3 carries and 108.2 rushing yards per game, with a 5.3 per-carry average. Now, the junior back is earning recognition as one of the nation's top running backs. - Deseret News

Utah ended Oregon's College Football Playoff hopes in dominant fashion. The Ducks' 38-7 loss Saturday night also ended any chance the Pac-12 champion will claim one of the bids in the four-team playoff. Neither Oregon nor Utah will finish high enough in the College Football Playoff rankings to earn a bid. It means that the Pac-12 will not send its champion to the playoff for a fourth consecutive season. 'It hurts because there were a lot of expectations,' Oregon quarterback Anthony Brown said. "The potential was there, and we didn't maximize. We didn't grab the opportunity that was right in front of us." The No. 4 Ducks never really had a chance against the Utes after no. 24 Utah scored 14 points in the final 27 seconds before halftime to take a four-touchdown lead.

Britain Covey returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half. "It really was a tough situation for them coming out and being down 28-0," Utes coach Kyle Whittingham said. "That was really the biggest portion of the game and the thing that really give us a ton of momentum." Tavion Thomas ran for 94 yards and three touchdowns to help the Utes (8-3, 7-1 Pac-12, No. 23 CFP) wrap up a share of the Pac-12 South title and a spot in the conference championship game. Utah has won four in a row. Thomas has run for a Utah-record 17 touchdowns this season. The previous mark was 15, shared by Zack Moss and John White IV. Cameron Rising threw for 178 yards. His top target, Brant Kuithe, piled up 118 yards on five catches for just the second 100-yard game of his career. Covey had 191 all-purpose yards. Utah converted 11 of 14 third downs and finished with 386 total yards. - Utah/AP College Football

Utah got off to fast start and didn't let up. Tavion Thomas ran for four TDs in the first half, TJ Pledger scored on a school-record 96-yard run and Utah ran past Stanford 52-7 on Friday night. The game was a mismatch from the start as the Utes (6-3, 5-1 Pac-12) scored TDs on their first two drives after coach Kyle Whittingham opted to take the ball first and didn't allow the Cardinal (3-6, 2-5) to get a first down until it was 21-0 in the second quarter. "Coach Whitt has a tremendous amount of confidence in this offense and knows that we like to start fast and like to get going early," quarterback Cameron Rising said. "The O-line did a great job that first drive and really dominated up front." Utah just added on from there, scoring five TDs and one field goal on seven drives in the first half with the only stop coming on a botched snap.

Thomas raced for a 58-yard score on a one-play drive for the of his four TDs, tying the school record he had also matched last week against UCLA. Pledger then outran the Cardinal defense on the first play of another drive for the longest run ever by the Utes. Utah outgained Stanford 440-28 in taking a 38-0 halftime lead for the second highest yardage discrepancy in the first half of an FBS game in the past seven seasons, 24 yards shy of Boise State's edge against Connecticut in 2018. The Cardinal, who were playing without injured starting quarterback Tanner McKee, suffered their most lopsided loss since a 57-7 defeat to Notre Dame in 2003. Stanford has lost four straight games. - Utah/AP College Football

  10/31/21 - RB Tavion ThomasrJr/2023, Utah, 6-0, 237 (DS#25 RB) + More +

Tavion Thomas rushed for a career-high 160 yards and a school record-tying four touchdowns to power Utah to a 44-24 win Saturday night as the school retired the number 22 in honor of the untimely deaths of Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe. "My O-line was moving that thing. It made it easy for me the way they were working together," Thomas said. Cam Rising threw for 179 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score to run Utah's winning streak against the Bruins to five. "We got a group of dogs and they just don't stop going. They just keep that gas pedal tilted down and just go. It's really fun and I'm happy to be a part of it," Rising said. If his passing and running wasn't enough, Rising even punted twice in quick-kick situations and had them both downed inside the 10-yard line.

But the key was running the ball, according to Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. "They led the league (allowing just 94.9 yards rushing per game going into the game) and we got 297," Whittingham said. "Tavion was outstanding. He's really turned into a workhorse for us." Utah (5-3, 4-1 Pac-12) is alone atop the conference's south division and has beaten the other three contenders – the Bruins, USC and Arizona State, the only other team with fewer than three Pac-12 losses. Freshman Ethan Garbers threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns on 27-for-44 passing with an interception for UCLA (5-4, 3-3). He made his first career start in place of Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who was injured on the Bruins' final possession of last week's loss to Oregon. - Utah/AP College Football
