Fullback Brad Roberts ran for 174 yards and three touchdowns to help Air Force overcome several miscues, including a snap over the punter's head, in a 41-10 win over Colorado on a dreary Saturday. Hosting the Buffaloes for the first time since 1974, the Falcons built a 20-0 lead. Air Force entered the nationally televised game as a 17 1/2-point favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, but couldn't shake Colorado until late in the third quarter, when they scored 21 straight points. "It's an awesome fee ling (to beat Colorado)," said Roberts, who is from a Denver suburb and went to a few Buffaloes games growing up. "We played a really good game and our defense really stepped up to the plate." Air Force (2-0) and Colorado (0-2) combined for six turnovers in the rainy conditions, including each team fumbling at the goal line while going in for a score. The Buffaloes' goal-line fumble occurred in the third and right after Air Force set them up in good field position after a snap sailed well over the head of punter Carson Bay. Alex Fontenot was trying to wiggle into the end zone when the ball was ripped away. It would have made it a one-score game. Falcons quarterback Haaziq Daniels scored from a yard out late in the third to wrap up a second straig ht win over the Buffaloes. Air Force won in Boulder in 2019. - Air Force/AP College Football

The preseason accolades continued to roll in Thursday for an Air Force football team unaccustomed to such honors. Three Falcons - offensive lineman Isaac Cochran, running back Brad Roberts and linebacker Vince Sanford - were named first-team preseason Al l-Mountain West. The three first-teamers tie for the most for Air Force since they had four in 2011, and Roberts was the first offensive skill-position player to earn the honor since Jared Tew before the 2010 season.Since the creation of the Mount ain West in 1999, Air Force has been shut out of the preseason all-conference team seven times and had five other years with just one selection. "A lot of times, Air Force is ruled out on some of the things," said Roberts, who was a first-team Mountain W est selection following a 2021 season that saw him lead the conference with 1,352 rushing yards. "I think we have a really tough and gritty team, and it shows that we're starting to get recognized." Cochran joins Nolan Laufenberg and Parker Ferguson - bo th now in the NFL - as the only Falcons offensive linemen to earn the preseason honor since 2011. Sanford appears on the team after making 17 tackles for loss that accounted for 118 yards last season in a breakout junior campaign. - Colorado Springs Gaze tte

Brad Roberts rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns, Air Force's defense turned in another stifling performance, and the Falcons knocked off Boise State 24-17 Saturday night. Air Force (6-1, 3-1 Mountain West Conference), which hasn't started a season t his well since 2002 when the Falcons began the season 6-0 before finishing 8-5, snapped a four-game losing streak to the Broncos. After giving up two touchdowns on Boise State's first three possessions, Air Force's defense took over. "We really settled i n after the first three series and made some big plays when we really needed them," Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said. "We were able to keep them out of the end zone and came up with some key stops, even at the end of the game to hold them to just a fiel d goal." Boise State (3-4, 1-2) lost its third home game of the season, the first time that has happened since 1998.It's also the first time the Broncos have lost three straight at home since 1997. "Everyone knows what the standard is here, whethe r it's on the road or at home," Boise State coach Andy Avalos said. "The standard is the competitive nature and the standard we have on the field is that it gives us an opportunity to be successful. And there are a lot of things we have to continue to im prove on...We had some opportunities and we didn't execute." After falling behind early, Air Force employed the nation's top rushing attack to grind down Boise State and take a 21-14 halftime lead. - Air Force/AP College Football

No matter the result, this was going to be a special day to play football for Air Force or Navy. Brad Roberts ran for two touchdowns and Haaziq Daniels added one, and Air Force held the Midshipmen to one first down before the fourth quarter in a 23-3 vic tory Saturday. The outcome always matters between these two teams - but this game was significant because the two service academies were playing on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. "For me, it kind of puts everything in perspective," N avy running back Chance Warren said. "I'm sitting here sour and very upset about a loss, but 20 years ago today, so many people lost loved ones. So it just kind of put it in perspective that ... I'm out here playing college football with some of my best friends, and brothers for life." This was the earliest meeting in series history between these teams, scheduled with 9/11 in mind. The pregame pageantry felt even more meaningful than usual. The players took the field carrying American flags before the game. At halftime, the names of Navy and Air Force grads lost on 9/11 were put on the videoboard. "I think in the big picture you come to the Air Force and Naval Academy to serve," Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said. "We'll never ever forget, not onl y those that perished and their families, but certainly just the remarkable, the way they answered the duty, in terms of our first responders." Roberts ran for a 3-yard TD in the second quarter, and Daniels scored on a 28-yard run in the final minute of the third. That was plenty of offense for Air Force (2-0) on a day the Falcons held Navy (0-2) without a completed pass through the first three quarters. "We just stayed aggressive and just played our keys and played how we could play," Air Force linebac ker Demonte Meeks said. "And didn't go outside of ourselves at all. I think that was the key for us." - Air Force/AP College Football

There is some confusion around the exact position Brad Roberts will play in Air Force's backfield this year. Even for Roberts. He played tailback as a freshman. He was a fullback last year in a breakout sophomore campaign. He's listed as the top tailback on the depth chart. He's playing fullback in practice. "Right now I'm at fullback," Roberts said. "I'm staying at fullback, I think. But there's plays where I go to tailback. "I think I'm fullback. But honestly, I'm not too sure." The thing is, it doesn 't really matter. Air Force's offense constantly shifts around positions and responsibilities in its backfield, motioning before the snap and utilizing different formations and personnel groups with virtually each play.If you're lining up as a ful lback, tailback or slot receiver you could wind up blocking, taking a handoff or running wide for a sweep or as a pitch man. "I was a little bit skeptical about moving to fullback," Roberts said when reflecting on a shortened sophomore season that saw hi m run for a team-high 461 yards and five touchdowns in just four games. "But just seeing how much space you have at fullback and getting a whole field vision, I feel like I'm more of a north-to-south runner vs. east to west, and I feel like the fullback gives me the best chance to have an opportunity to capitalize on it." - Colorado Springs Gazette

Brad Roberts' career spans just six quarters for Air Force. In that short time, the fullback has gained a team-high 280 yards. With an urgency reminiscent of the manner in which he hits a hole, this sophomore has thrust himself into prominence in the Fal cons' offense and was rewarded Monday with Mountain West offensive player of the week honors. Roberts ran for 177 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries against New Mexico in a 28-0 victory Friday night. It was his first start and full game. "There's n o quit in the guy," coach Troy Calhoun said after the game, calling Roberts "a warrior."Roberts, an Arvada native, made his first appearance in the second half of the season-opening 40-7 victory over Navy. He ran for 102 yards in that game with a touchdown. For unspecified reasons, he then sat the next two games before being moved into the starting lineup when Timothy Jackson was unavailable against the Lobos. Roberts ran for two first-half touchdowns as Air Force built a 21-0 lead. Roberts was n ot made available to media following the game as he received treatment. "The thing I like most about him, he gets to the hole fast," left guard Nolan Laufenberg said. - Colorado Springs Gazette
