2022 WALTER CAMP SECOND TEAM ALL-AMERICAN: DL Durrell Johnson, Liberty,...Johnson is the fifth player in program history to be named to the Walter Camp All-America team and the first at the FBS level (RB Rashad Jennings - 2008; K Matt Bevins - 2009 and 2010; RS Kevin Fogg - 2011; S Jacob Hagen - 2014). This is the second All-America honor of Johnson’s three-year Liberty career. He was also named to the Phil Steele Postseason All-America fourth-team in 2020. Johnson finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the country in tackles for a loss (1.9 per game) and leads the nation with 22.5 tackles for a loss (95 yards). He is one of only two FBS players in the country with 20-plus tackles for a loss in 2022, joining USC’s Tuli Tuipulotu (20.0 TFLs).

The native of Baltimore, Md., also ranks No. 3 in the country with three forced fumbles and No. 34 in the country in sacks (8.0/0.67 per game). Johnson has recorded 49 tackles during the 2022 season (32 solo, 17 assisted). He has also added four pass breakups, two quarterback hurries and an interception. He has finished six of Liberty’s 12 games in 2022 with five or more tackles. Since transferring to Liberty prior to the 2020 season, Johnson has tallied 112 career stops (73 solo, 39 assisted), along with 40.0 tackles for a loss and 16.5 sacks in 32 games played. - Liberty Football

The Flames, in addition to boasting the nation's No. 7 pass defense (166.4 yards per game), also rank seventh nationally in third-down defense. Opponents have converted on 18 of 65 third-down chances through five games, and the number drastically drops to 4 of 36 when facing 7 yards or longer to gain. "We talk about coverage and the rush going hand-in-hand and you look at the ability for us to not have to play a lot of pressure," Liberty safeties coach Corey Batoon said. "We've been rushing four [defenders] a lot of times and not having to devote five into the charge. The job that we're doing up front in terms of disrupting quarterbacks with just bringing four has really led to our ability to play some zones and some max drop situations and really put the passing game in our favor."

Liberty's defensive front has thrived on third downs this season. The group has recorded 11 of its 16 sacks on third down, and nine of those sacks have come when opponents need to gain 7 yards or more. "Our D-line is outstanding," Liberty safety JaVon Scruggs (Appomattox) said. "Those two edge rushers in Durrell Johnson and TreShaun Clark, those guys are big, scary guys that the tackles don't like to really see because they're easily faster than any O-lineman that we're facing." Johnson is tied for third in the nation with six sacks and five of those have come on third down. Clark has added another 2.5 sacks on third down. "They're good up front, there's no doubt about that," Kubik said. - Lynchburg News and Advance

It was noticeable on FIU's final offensive possession this past Saturday the internal clock on each play was ticking faster and faster for Panthers quarterback Stone Norton. The redshirt freshman had to make quick decisions because of the pressure he felt on his blind side from Liberty defensive end Durrell Johnson. Johnson utilized head fakes and quick first steps to either gain leverage or beat FIU left tackle D'Antne Demery off the snap, and Johnson's ability to pressure Norton on three consecutive plays helped the Flames secure a thrilling two-point victory over the Panthers. The dominating conclusion capped a four-tackle, 2.5-sack performance the Liberty coaches knew Johnson was capable of producing when recruiting him out of ASA College in Brooklyn, New York. "We feel like we've hit a home run," defensive line coach Josh Aldridge said. Johnson, through two games, leads the Flames (2-0) with 4.5 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks. He ranks second on the team with 10 tackles, only trailing linebacker and roommate Anthony Butler. "I think it makes a huge difference having a guy like that you know is going to win his one-on-one battles nine times out of 10," Butler said. "He's made a huge impact on this team, and as you guys saw it on that last drive, was basically able to take over the entire game and finish the game out." - Lynchburg News and Advance
