For as long as he can remember, Nathaniel Dell has drawn attention on the football field. Before he would become a preseason All-America wide receiver at the University of Houston, young "Tank" was making defenders miss as a running back on the Little Le ague fields in Daytona Beach, Fla. "When I get the ball in my hands, I'm comfortable, because I've been having the ball in my hands since I was 6 years old," Dell said Thursday during a videoconference with reporters. "I had everybody there wanting to se e me play. I just made a lot of plays - the same as what I'm doing right now." Years later, Dell continues to draw a crowd and attention, especially from defensive coordinators whose job is to devise Saturday game plans to stop one of the nation's top re turning receivers.It was a futile effort last season as Dell produced one of the best seasons by a receiver in UH history: 90 catches, 1,329 yards and 12 touchdowns. "This year, after what I did last year, I'm going to get a lot of attention on th e offense and have defenses trying to cover me from everywhere," Dell said. Offseason roster additions should take a lot of the pressure off UH to rely heavily on playing Dell at one of the outside receiver spots. Instead, coach Dana Holgorsen envisions Dell lining up in the slot - the space between the end of the offensive line and an outside receiver - and becoming an even bigger matchup problem for opposing defenses. "He's an elite inside receiver," Holgorsen said. "He's unguardable," quarterback Cl ayton Tune added. "He's really unguardable anywhere on the field, but especially in the slot." - Houston Chronicle

2022 PRESEASON MAXWELL AWARD WATCH LIST: Nathaniel Dell, Houston,...In 2021, little Houston wide receiver Nathaniel Bell (5-10, 155) had a tremendous sophomore season that earned him a spot on All-American Athletic Conference First Team ... also named to the Dave Campbell All-State First Team … became one of the top receiving threats in college football through 14 games ... led the team in receptions (90), receiving yards (1,329), and receiving touchdowns (12) as well leading the entire American Athle tic Conference ... the 12 receiving touchdowns placed him eighth in the nation ... eight receptions for 134 yards with two touchdowns against Grambling (Sept. 18) ... set a single game career-high 165 receiving yards and three touchdowns to help knock of f undefeated No. 17 SMU (Oct. 30) ... just one week later he totaled 164 receiving yards against South Florida (Nov. 6) ... saved his best for last with a single game career-high in receptions with 10 against Auburn in the Birmingham Bowl victory (Dec. 2 8). - Houston Football

Dell added his name to the long list of standout wide receivers to play at UH with a breakout season that produced 90 catches, 1,329 yards and 12 touchdowns. Dell goes by the nickname "Tank" - which has nothing to do with his 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame a nd everything to do with how he bulldozed opposing secondaries last season. Dell's yardage total was the fifth-most in school history, his receptions ranked 12th and his touchdowns are tied for eighth. He got even better late in the season with five 100- yard games over the final seven games, including 152 yards against Cincinnati in the AAC Championship Game. "I think he's the best receiver in the country," running back Ta'Zhawn Henry said. "I feel like everybody is sleeping on him." Dell displays the b lend of speed and sure hands that makes him one of the statistically-best returning receivers in the nation. How much better can he be? Transfer portal additions this offseason will allow coach Dana Holgorsen to move Dell to one of the inside receiver sp ots (a luxury the Cougars did not have last season) and put Dell in some favorable matchups. He has developed a strong rapport with quarterback Clayton Tune, who has come to depend on Dell whether it's for a game-changing play or to move the chains on th ird down. - Houston Chronicle

NOV 1 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nathaniel Dell, So., WR, Houston,...Dell led Houston to a 44-37 win against previously unbeaten SMU, which was ranked No. 19 and No. 16 in last week's national polls. Dell had nine receptio ns for 165 yards and three touchdowns (7, 48, 17), becoming the first Cougar player with three touchdown catches since the 2018 season.
