Xavier Hutchinson caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Dekkers in the fourth quarter, completing a 99-yard drive to lead Iowa State past Iowa, 10-7, on Saturday. The 21-play possession that started in the third quarter took 11 minutes, 49 seconds off the clock, and helped the Cyclones (2-0) end a six-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes (1-1). "Our whole mindset was, "One play at a time," Hutchinson said. "When the ball comes to you, just make a play." Iowa State survived three turnovers and two bl ocked punts to gain their first road win in the in-state rivalry since 2014, forcing three Iowa turnovers and holding the Hawkeyes to 150 yards of offense. "It's a game of imperfection," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. "For our kids to have the char acter and resiliency to keep playing, those are traits that will continue to serve us well." Still, the Hawkeyes had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds. Two penalties on Iowa State after what appeared to be a game-ending turnover by the Hawkey es gave Iowa the ball at the Cyclones' 39-yard line with nine seconds left. Quarterback Spencer Petras threw a 9-yard pass to tight end Sam LaPorta to get Iowa into field-goal range, but Aaron Blom's 48-yard field goal attempt was wide left as time expir ed. - Iowa State/AP College Football

In his second season with the Cyclones, Xavier Hutchinson was third in the Big 12 with 987 receiving yards and had five touchdowns while averaging 75.9 yards per game. In doing so, he cemented his place as a starter in Campbell's offense. It was a rise t o the top of a Power 5 program that surprised some people, but not Hutchinson's head coach. "I don't know if Xavier was ever a guy that maybe surprised me in terms of what he brought to our program," Campbell said during media day. "I think I had a reall y good understanding of what we were getting in Xavier Hutchinson when he came here."This could be the season Hutchinson shows what he's fully capable of. Last year, Kolar led the team in receiving touchdowns with six. Hall had three and Chase All en had two. Long story short, Purdy had lots of options in his receiving corps and took full advantage. With all three of those players gone, Dekkers will still have an elite receiver in Hutchinson. Should Campbell need other options for Dekkers to throw to, Sean Shaw Jr. and Jaylin Noel are two names to keep an eye on. - Des Moines Register

Even before playing in the Cheez-It Bowl with a injured thumb, though, Xavier Hutchinson announced his intention to return for a third and final season in Ames. Given his talent and production, that would be immense news under any circumstances, but give n the roster turnover Iowa State experienced, it was magnified. Having a new starting quarterback for the first time since 2018 makes his return even more critical. First-year starting QB Hunter Dekkers will immediately have one of the best receivers in the country as a target. Hutchinson has 147 catches, 1,758 yards and nine touchdowns in 13 games over two seasons. He's shown the ability to change the game from all over the field with his speed, route-running and hands. He also showed plenty of grit an d toughness playing in a Cheez-It Bowl with the bum thumb when sitting - or opting - out would have been a pretty easy choice following a season that began with College Football Playoffs aspirations. For all that Hutchinson accomplished in two year s with quarterback Brock Purdy, Dekkers could offer him the opportunity to flash even a little bit more. Purdy had many strengths, but throwing the deep ball was not among them. With Dekkers' bigger arm, Hutchinson could have the opportunity to stretch t he field in new, dynamic ways. Regardless, Hutchinson's return raises the ceiling for Tom Manning's offense not only because of his own talent, but also because of its impact on the quarterback. Having a reliable, dynamic threat on the outside who is cap able of playing every down provides the safety and security that goes a long way with an inexperienced quarterback. - Des Moines Register

Emergence of Hutchinson and Allen. The transfer is gradually becoming Purdy's favorite receiver. Saturday, he caught eight of Purdy's first 30 completions. He's getting open, which helps. He's getting separation at the line of scrimmage, something the Cy clones had trouble doing in the first couple of games. It's not exactly an emergence for tight end Chase Allen, who's been a significant part of the program for a long time. He did, however, catch four passes, including one that was a touchdown. Allen wa s so beset with injuries during his first two seasons that it's good to finally see him having the kind of season everyone knew he was capable of. Cyclones tight ends combined for 10 receptions for 122 yards and two touchdowns. "Each week, we have a diff erent way to attack a game to win it," Allen said. "They've been calling on the tight ends the last few games. Our numbers are getting called. We're showing up." - Des Moines Register

Make your own determination about Xavier Hutchinson being the next standout receiver that Iowa State hopes he becomes, but consider this: He said no to a last-minute pitch by Oklahoma. He said no when the Sooners' staff drew comparisons to All-World CeeD ee Lamb, now in the Cowboys camp after being a first-round selection in the most recent NFL draft. He said no to a team that historically has one of the best quarterbacks in the college football land, and no to a team that's been in four of the past five college football playoffs. To hang with his June 2019 commitment to Matt Campbell says something about the junior, who at this time a season ago, was preparing with the rest of the Blinn Junior College team.If you're a Cyclones fan, you should ro ot for stories like these, because a receiver saying no to a program that has won or shared the last five Big 12 Conference regular-season championships? That should prove something, not only about Campbell's rising program, but also about the kind of pl ayers he recruits. "It wasn't tough at all, actually," Hutchinson said last week about his decision to stick with the Cyclones. "When you have a program like Iowa State's, with the coaches and the family-like experience you get here - it's really easy to say no to schools like that. "I commend Iowa State for everything they've done for me." - Des Moines Register
