Ronald Williams, Michigan State, Player News

Speed and Williams are two transfers with national championship pedigrees, as well as the length and speed NFL scouts covet to defend on the edge. Williams' injury history could be an issue - he pushed through a back issue last season and wore a cast this spring after a broken arm kept him out of most of Alabama's national championship season in 2020 - but he showed progress in coverage after arriving last summer. An ankle injury hampered Speed after he started three of his 13 games in his final season at Georgia; he entered the portal and arrived in East Lansing shortly after the Bulldogs won the national championship in January. His new MSU teammates raved about Speed's game-breaking ability and talent all spring. - Lansing State Journal

Michigan State football isn't done adding to next season's roster yet. And Mel Tucker again went into the transfer portal, landing a player from his old boss, Nick Saban. Defensive back Ronald Williams announced via Twitter on Tuesday he committed to the Spartans. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound native of Ferriday, Louisiana, is MSU's 15th scholarship addition from the portal in the offseason, along with one nonscholarship transfer.

Williams played last season for Saban at Alabama after spending two years at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, where the former high school quarterback blossomed into a National Junior College Athletic Association All-American at cornerback as a sophomore and became a four-star prospect, according to 247Sports.com. An arm injury affected Williams early in the 2020 season, and he finished with just one tackle in three games. - Lansing State Journal

An Alabama backup defensive back has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Ronald Williams, a former four-star junior college signee who was part of the Crimson Tide's 2020 recruiting class, went into the portal on Friday, AL.com has learned. Although Williams was viewed as a potential immediate starter at nickel back when he signed with the Tide, it was then-freshmen Malachi Moore and Brian Branch who emerged as the team's top two options at the position during 2020 fall camp. Williams was then set back by an arm injury that caused him to miss the beginning part of the season, ended up playing in just three games as a reserve and didn't seem to be in line to be a starter this year. - Birmingham News

Ronald Williams Jr. wasn't a full-time starter as a redshirt freshmen at Hutchinson Community College, but he played enough to attract FBS schools. He had the credits to graduate and opportunities to jump to a four-year school. He told Andrew Krause - at the time Hutchinson Community College's defensive backs coach, now its tight ends coach, special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator - he wanted to return. He thought he could be better. Williams then developed into the prospect that drew Alabama's attention, and could start for UA right away.

Williams is one player in UA's highly-contested battle for playing time at the star and money positions in the secondary. He never would have reached that level if not for his final season at Hutchinson. "That spring is when he became who he is now," Krause said. "He became a student of the game, a complete and total technician. He looked to perfect every movement and every aspect of what we did here." - Montgomery Advertiser
