Mississippi State defensive back Collin Duncan isn't mincing words about this year's Bulldogs defense. "I think it can be great," Duncan said after practice Saturday. "I feel like it can be one of the great defenses here at Mississippi State and that's a lot. Just a few years ago we had one of the top defenses in the nation." Duncan, a junior safety from Montgomery, Alabama, has been one of the standout performers through the first few days of camp, according to coach Mike Leach. Duncan started the last seven games of the 2020 season for the Bulldogs, helping lead a defense that finished No. 57 nationally in scoring defense and No. 52 in total defense. But already, just one weekend into fall camp, Duncan is ready to compare his squad to the 2018 unit that had the best total defense and the No. 2 scoring defense in the FBS. The difference between 2020 and 2021, as Duncan sees it, is depth. "We went last year from being one-deep at almost every position to now being three- or four-deep at almost e very position. I feel like you're going to see a lot of guys this year just off of being able to rotate. A lot of guys are proving themselves this fall. It's going to be tremendous help." - The Clarion Ledger
