Jahleel Billingsley, Texas, Player News
|
Asked again about Jahleel Billingsley, Saban said, "We're just trying to get Jahleel to be a very responsible, disciplined person as well as a responsible, disciplined player. [He] certainly is a very talented guy, and we have high hopes for how he can c ontribute to the team. How that happens is sort of up to him, and his choice." Billingsley was listed as the co-backup along with Major Tennison at tight end on Monday's depth chart. Later that day, Billingsley tweeted, "Come on now I'm the 3rd option" w ith a crying emoji before deleting that tweet. - Birmingham News

A day after Alabama football coach Nick Saban said he hoped tight end Jahleel Billingsley would "be back out there with us in a few days," Billinglsey practiced on Monday. During the media viewing period, Billinglsey worked with the tight ends in the far left corner. Saban, on Sunday, didn't specify why Billingsley wasn't practicing. He brought it up when asked how Billingsley might fit what they want to do on offense and how he wants to see Billingsley grow. "I think that has a lot to do with his level of commitment that I talked about before, in terms of doing the right things, developing as a player," Saban said. "He does have a lot of ability. He can be a positive contributor on the team. But he's also got to buy into the principles and values of t he team and be a good teammate. Do the things that everyone else in the organization does so that he has the respect of his teammates. We're certainly trying to help him do that." - Montgomery Advertiser

Alabama coach Nick Saban revealed Sunday that junior tight end Jahleel Billingsley is not currently practicing for a reason he did not disclose. Saban's first news conference of fall camp, which came after practices Friday and Saturday, ended with a gene ral question about Billingsley's development in which Saban offered some detail about Billingsley's situation. "I think [his growth] has a lot to do with his level of commitment that I talked about before, in terms of doing the right things, developing a s a player," Saban responded. "He does have a lot of ability. He can be a positive contributor on the team. "But he's also got to buy into the principles and values of the team and be a good teammate. Do the things that everyone else in the organization does so that he has the respect of his teammates. "We're certainly trying to help him do that and hopefully he'll be back out there with us in a few days. We'll see how that all develops." Saban did not include Billingsley in his injury update at the beg inning of his news conference. - Birmingham News

The No. 11-ranked tight end in the 2019 class saw a huge jump in his production in the final seven games last season. He had caught one ball six weeks into the season before reeling in 17 more for 274 yards and three touchdowns to finish. Billingsley als o received kicks and punts in the final weeks of the season and was used in the slot and out wide. O'Brien must figure out a way to get the shifty tight end in space. - Montgomery Advertiser

Billingsley made himself known to a lesser degree during Forristall's absence last year, primarily on a 19-yard reception against Mississippi State. He's done much more this year, catching three passes for 78 yards against Mississippi State and two more for 33 yards and a touchdown against Auburn. His touchdown reception against Auburn demonstrated the utility UA sees in Billingsley. The play was entirely designed to get him open, drawing the safety from the right side across the formation with a crossi ng route just to run Billingsley into that space, trusting him to get the correct leverage on his defender."Jahleel is extremely skilled," UA wide receiver John Metchie III said. "Somebody, especially being so close to Jahleel, somebody I'm person ally excited about for him to get on the scene and be able to showcase what he can do more because there's a lot more that he can do that has not yet been seen." Billingsley had more receptions in the last two games than he had in the previous 14 games o f his career. "Jahleel is kind of coming into his own a little bit as a tight end," Saban said. "He's a very good receiver. I think having some success in the last couple games has probably helped his confidence a little bit. And he's definitely somebody who we feel can make plays for us on offense, and we need to try to utilize him every way that we can." - Montgomery Advertiser

There've been a few talented tight ends to come through this Alabama program in the Nick Saban era. Some have been more involved in the passing game than others with first-round pick O.J. Howard representing the high-water mark to this point. Well, Najee Harris offered high praise for the next up-and-coming player at that position. Sophomore Jahleel Billingsley had a career-high three catches for 78 yards in his first start Saturday in the 63-3 win over Kentucky. "I feel like Jahleel could be one of the top players to come through here," Harris said after the game. "What he provides and what he brings to the game with his athleticism and his height and his ability to block, once he gets everything under control, he's going to be something crazy to deal with," Harris said, "especially at the next level."Harris, known for his aerial work, certainly appreciated Billingsley work on the first offensive play of Alabama's night. Mac Jones hit the tight end for a 34-yard play punctuated by the kind of hurdle that became Harris' trademark. Billingsley got the start with senior Miller Forristall slowed by a sprained ankle and injured shoulder. Saban said he could have played but they didn't want to force it so Billingsley got the call. Listed at 6-foot- 3, 230 pounds, he's a little smaller than the block-heavy Forristall (6-5, 244 pounds). Saban is impressed with Billingsley's athleticism as a receiver. "The big thing is consistency in performance with him," Saban said. "Every day he's got to go out the re and do things you know a certain way that we can trust them and depend on." - Birmingham News
