Coming into the season the defensive line looked to be Arizona State's strong suit both with quality players and depth. Well that has taken a hit as head coach Herm Edwards announced that senior defensive end Michael Matus will miss the season with a tor n ACL. Matus was injured in practice last week. He did not practice on Wednesday or Friday but was at practice aided by a crutch, with his left knee in a brace.Matus was not just a key figure on the field but as one of the team leaders and most ar ticulate athletes on the defensive side of the ball. He will travel with the team and serve in a coach/mentor capacity. "It's a big loss for us in a lot of ways," Edwards said. "Not just as a football player but as a leader. his grit, being on the field, a lot of experience. We're going to miss that in him but he's going to be like a coach now. He's excited about being able to go with the team." Matus took to the podium after Edwards did so following Monday's practice. "One of the main things I'm focusi ng on now is getting into surgery, getting into the rehab and taking it day by day. It's very unfortunate circumstances but unfortunately it's football and it happened. Some of the things I preach is, Coach Rod (Rodriguez) has done a phenomenal job of br inging up the younger guys and like Herm says, you're one hit away from having to go in the game. Arizona State Sun Devils defensive end Michael Matus will miss the entire 2022 season due to a knee injury, head coach Herm Edwards announced on Monday. The redshirt senior was seen at practice on Friday in a knee brace and using one crutch to help him w alk around the field after suffering a left ACL tear during practice on Wednesday. In fact, Matus played five plays on the injured knee after what he called a "random play." The loss will be a huge blow to not only defensive line coach Robert Rodriguez's unit from a defensive line and pass rush standpoint, but also from a leadership perspective, as the honorary captain has been at ASU since 2018 - the same year Edwards took over head coaching duties. "We'll lose him for the year," Edwards said. "He's do ne for the year. He'll travel, he's going to be an honorary captain...That's a big loss for us in a lot of ways obviously, not just as a football player but as a leader. "His grit and being on the field, he has a lot of experience - we're going to miss t hat in him. He's going to be like a coach now. He's excited about being able to go with the team. That's a hard one for a fifth-year senior." New defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson said at the beginning of fall camp that the defensive line would have to be the "catalyst" for the Arizona State defense if it wanted to repeat as the best in the Pac-12 and No. 13 in the nation in total defense (yards allowed). - Arizonasports.com

What has impressed Arizona State defensive line coach Robert Rodriguez most about sophomore Michael Matus isn't the work he has done on the football field, it's the focus he also has away from it. Matus, a 6-foot-2, 253-pounds from Katy, Texas, played li ttle last year but has worked his way into the Sun Devils starting lineup at defensive end. It was a surprise with junior linebacker-turned-defensive end Tyler Johnson the one most had pegged for that starting spot. Rodriguez, who came to ASU after coach ing the same position for the Minnesota Vikings, is a stickler for detail, and he isn't always the easiest coach to impress. Matus has been one athlete who has done so."He asks all the right questions and he is a quick study," Rodriguez said. "He' ll see something in a game he watched on television and then come to me the next day and ask about it. He's always thinking and focusing on what he needs to do to get better, not just when he's on the football field. There aren't a lot of guys that think that way." Rodriguez is the school's sixth position coach in as many years, so Matus has had a lot of voices when it comes to the intricacies of the defensive line. He was recruited by previous head coach Todd Graham but opted to honor his commitment to the school despite the coaching change. As a true freshman he contributed on the scout team.
