The Butkus Award honoring the nation's best linebackers kicked off its 37th annual selection process today by announcing its collegiate and high school preseason watch lists, recognizing BYU's Payton Wilgar on its list of top college linebackers. Each wa tch list contains 51 linebackers, mirroring the legendary "51" pro jersey associated with the Award's namesake Dick Butkus, who was recognized by NFL Films as the best defensive player in football history. The Collegiate Butkus Award watch list includes candidates from 51 universities, including returning five returning semifinalists. Wilgar, a 6-3, 245-pound Covid-year sophomore in 2021, is a key, versatile defender against the run and pass for BYU. In 2020, he helped the Cougars finish ranked No. 11 i n the nation with an 11-1 record, making 57 tackles with five tackles for loss while adding a team-best five QB hurries with four pass breakups and forced a fumble. - Daily Herald

The Cougars lost not only the biggest leader in the linebacker room but one of the biggest leaders on the team in Isaiah Kaufusi, who signed with the Indianapolis Colts in May. But Clune isn't worried much. The first-year coach sees Keenan Pili and Payto n Wilgar as the emerging leaders of the group. While the pair aren't super vocal in their newfound leadership roles, they set "great examples of hard work," Clune said. Pili said the new role was something that just came onto his shoulders."Obviou sly we had amazing leaders last year," Pili said. "Isaiah Kaufusi, we kind of looked up to him. That mentality was just tossed down to the next level and we're willing to step up and do what we can." Although the group lost one of the team's biggest lead ers, they didn't lose much more top talent. The linebacker group returned a lot of experience. After Pili and Wilgar, the next men up are Max Tooley and Ben Bywater and are followed by some young, slightly unproven, but promising talent like Joh Wilson, Tavita Gagnier and Drew Jensen, among others. - Salt Lake Tribune
