What do players and coaches think of preseason predictions? Not a whole lot. Of course, the games aren't played on paper. If they were, Toledo would have won about five Mid-American Conference titles in the past decade. Alas, the Rockets have a single ch ampionship. But this season could be different - according to what's on paper. The MAC's media contingent handed Toledo six of 24 first-place votes, second only to defending champion Northern Illinois' nine. Phil Steele, college football's most accurate prognosticator, picked UT to finish 10-2.ESPN's David Hale said the Rockets are the best over/under bet in the sport, advising prospective bettors to take the over on eight wins. The ESPN power index favors Toledo to win all eight of its MAC games . "I see it every year," senior linebacker Dyontae Johnson said. "It doesn't really mean anything. I think it's just something to put on paper for fans to see. At the end of the day, when the ball snaps on September 1, we'll see who's there." Head coach Jason Candle is not one to play up expectations, taking the opposite approach and lessening the pressure on his team. He would rather have Toledo picked to finish in the middle of the pack than see headlines about 10 wins. But Candle appreciates that hig h expectations are reserved for programs with rabid fan bases and a history of winning. The last thing he wants to hear is that Toledo is favored to run the table in the MAC. - Toledo Blade

This offseason Toledo linebacker Dyontae Johnson knew he wanted to get faster. To accomplish that feat, in addition to a litany of speed drills given to him by the Toledo strength and conditioning staff, Johnson also took up a new hobby: virtual yoga cla sses. "That's a little out of the ordinary for me," Johnson said. "I've definitely been a stiff athlete my whole life...But I feel like yoga is for everybody. It's a better way to connect yourself and with your body." While Johnson was maybe stiff on the field in the past, throughout his college career he has always been flexible when it comes to learning and his role on the team. The junior linebacker had to adapt quickly ever since he arrived at the University of Toledo. Over each of the last tw o seasons, while he didn't start, he played in every single contest. While he made a lot mistakes as an underclassman, Johnson said he was mostly worried about not continuously making the same mistakes. Head coach Jason Candle said Johnson has done a goo d job of getting "progressively better" in that regard, and especially with utilizing film to help him do so. "He's done a good job of taking mistakes off the video tape and really identifying what his weaknesses are to really put his best foot forward t o try to get better," he said. "From a progression standpoint, he's got progressively better from that point in time until now." - Bryan/College Station Eagle
