Jesse Matthews, San Diego State, Player News
|
San Diego State wide receiver Jesse Matthews told the Union-Tribune on Monday that he will not be back for the Aztecs next season, and he is declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft. Matthews could have returned for a sixth season at SDSU, using his "COVID year" of eligbility, but he believes "it's the time in my life where I just need to move onto the next chapter." Matthews, who graduated earlier this month with a communications degree, has been invited to the Hula Bowl, which is Jan. 9 in Orlando, Fla. His f ocus thereafter will be preparing for SDSU's Pro Day and other workouts leading up to the draft, which is April 27–29 in Kansas City, Mo. "I feel like coming back wouldn't improve my stock," Matthews said."I'm 23 years old, so I'm not really a y oung prospect. I'm kind of in the older category. "Another year of college football would just put more wear and tear on my body. There's no guarantee I would be injury-free throughout the next season, and I feel like I wouldn't really grow much more if I were to come back to college football. "I feel like, not that I've reached my ceiling in college football, but I've accomplished what I've needed to accomplish at San Diego State." Matthews' father, Tom Matthews, is a certified agent, and the family ha s gathered information from scouts and coaches in recent weeks and months to assess Jesse's professional prospects. At this point, he grades out as a sixth-round pick. A strong Pro Day - especially if he puts up a good 40 time - could move him up a round or two in the draft. - San Diego Union Tribune

Lucas Johnson passed for a career-best 333 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for another score as San Diego State beat No. 24 Texas-San Antonio 38-24 in the Frisco Bowl on Tuesday night for the Aztecs' program-record 12th win of the season. Jesse Matth ews caught touchdown passes of 11 and 20 yards and set career marks with 11 catches and 175 yards receiving. Tyrell Shavers caught the other touchdown pass, a 24-yarder. Greg Bell also scored on a 1-yard run for San Diego State (12-2). Johnson completed 24 of 36 passes. San Diego State kicker-punter Matt Araiza made a 33-yard field goal and finished the season with an NCAA-record 51.19 yards per punt. Araiza broke the mark set by Texas A&M's Braden Mann in 2018 (50.98). Frank Harris threw touchdown pass es of 12 yards to De'Corian Clark and 4 yards to Zakhari Franklin, and Brenden Brady scored on a 2-yard run for UTSA (12-2). Hunter Duplessis kicked a 41-yard field goal for the Roadrunners. UTSA played without junior running back Sincere McCormick, Conf erence USA's offensive player of the year. McCormick, who ranks seventh in the FBS in rushing (113.8 yards per game), was one of five UTSA players who opted out in advance of next year's NFL draft. - San Diego State/AP College Football
