  10/01/22 - RB Dezmon JacksonrSr/2023, Sam Houston, 5-11, 214 (DS#60 RB) + More +

Dezmon Jackson ran untouched into the end zone from a yard out with 35 seconds left to give Sam Houston a 17-16 win over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Stephen F. Austin (2-3, 0-1) looked to have pulled off the win by forcing an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal but an offsides penalty gave Sam Houston (2-2, 1-0) another opportunity. Trae Self pushed Stephen F. Austin to its 40 on the final possession before Trey Smith's interception ended it.

The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 13-0 lead late in the second quarter with a pair of Chris Campos field goals and Self's 85-yard touchdown pass to Moe Wedman. But before the half ended, Sam Houston's Donovan Adkins blocked a punt attempt, scooped up the ball and ran five yards to the Lumberjack 7. On the next play, Keegan Shoemaker lofted a touchdown pass to Noah Smith to get the Bearkats to 10-7 at halftime. It was the 11th straight win for Sam Houston in the 96th meeting of the Battle of Piney Woods. - AP College Football

Dezmon Jackson is a gamer. That phrase can mean a lot of different things these days, but here's what it means in regard to the Oklahoma State running back. "I don't say this a lot, but he actually plays better in games than he practices," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "Now, he practices hard, but in games, he slashes and seems to be more productive than he actually is in live settings in practice. "There's very few young men that I've come across in my career that were actually able to do that." That's a little bit of an unfortunate trait, considering how much time football players spend practicing, compared to playing games.

However, opening week is here, and Jackson is sure to get some game action on Saturday when the Cowboys host Missouri State at 6 p.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium, televised by ESPN+. "I've always referred to myself as not really a practice guy," said Jackson, a 5-foot-11, 220-pound redshirt senior. "I don't know why, but when I'm in practice, it don't really click to me, but when I get on the field in games, it's just so easy. "I think it's just my adrenaline going, knowing it's game day. Playing with my teammates, playing in front of fans and just doing something I love. It's something that gets me going." - Daily Oklahoman

Jackson rushed for 1,216 yards and 13 touchdowns on 163 rushing attempts in 2018 and the interested from Division I programs came with his performance. While many of his offers came from Group 5 programs such as Grambling State, Ohio and Western Kentucky, he did catch the eye of in-state program Kansas State, as well as nearby Oklahoma State. The Cowboy program has had a recent success of turning out an NFL talent at tailback coming out of the junior college ranks - Chris Carson, who played at Butler County Community (also in Kansas) and is now the starting running back for the Super Bowl contending Seattle Seahawks.

"I knew of some certain guys in the NFL that went the JUCO route and ended up in Division I, like Alvin Kamara went to my JUCO and Cordarrelle Patterson (also went to Hutchinson)," Jackson said. "So, a lot of big-time names have gone to JUCO, so when I got there I wasn't really aware." His journey through the Great Plains the past five years led to his breakout moment on a nationally telecast Big 12 Conference contest. He gave the anemic Oklahoma State offense a shot in the arm when the tailbacks - which had been dealing with nagging injuries for the better part of the season - were ruled out for the game, with his longest run of 23 yards being just nine yards short of Hubbard's longest rush this season. - Stillwater Press

He scored the first three touchdowns of his Cowboy career in the first half. He also finished with career highs in carries (36), rushing yards (235) rushing touchdowns (3), receptions (2) and receiving yards (10).   Hard to believe this guy has been sitting at third string this season. With Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown sidelined by injury, Jackson stepped in and stepped up. Big. He rushed for 235 yards on 36 carries and scored three touchdowns. He could've had a fourth but iced the game instead when slid down inside the 5-yard line in the final minute of the game. As impressive as his numbers were, the way he ran was even better. He was patient when he needed to wait on blocks. He was tough when he needed to get to the sticks for a first down. He was speedy when he went around the edge. It's impossible to know when Hubbard and Brown will be healthy again, but Jackson showed he can carry the load in the meantime. - Daily Oklahoman

Dezmon Jackson rushed for career highs of 235 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 21 Oklahoma State bounced back from a disappointing loss to rival Oklahoma to beat Texas Tech 50-44 on Saturday. Jackson had 36 carries in part because the top two backs, Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown, did not play. The Cowboys still ran for a season-high 317 yards. Hubbard was out with a right ankle injury. The redshirt junior was introduced with the seniors on Senior Day. He walked onto the field during a pregame ceremony wearing his jersey without pads and a medical boot on the injured leg. Brown also has been fighting through injuries. Spencer Sanders passed for 222 yards and ran for 78, and Tylan Wallace caught seven passes for 129 yards and a score for Oklahoma State (6-2, 5-2 Big 12), which remained in the running for a spot in the Big 12 title game.

Alan Bowman passed for 384 yards and three touchdowns, Erik Ezukanma caught seven passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns, and SaRodorick Thompson ran for 133 yards and two scores for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders (3-6, 2-6) gained 639 yards, but Oklahoma State made up for it with a safety, an onside kick return for a touchdown, and an interception return for a score. Texas Tech took a 24-21 lead in the third quarter on a 48-yard pass from Bowman to Ezukanma. The Red Raiders went for an onside kick, but the ball bounced right to Oklahoma State's Jason Taylor, and he ran it back for a touchdown to put the Cowboys ahead again. Later in the quarter, Oklahoma State's Tre Sterling had a 61-yard interception return to put the Cowboys up 34-24. After Tech's Xavier White bounced off a would-be tackler and went 70 yards for a touchdown, Oklahoma State came right back when Wallace hauled in a 27-yard TD pass for a 41-31 lead. In all, five touchdowns were scored during a 5:53 stretch in the third quarter. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football
