Cunningham's pass to Lane came on a first-down play after UTEP's Gavin Baechle kicked his second 47-yard field goal to get the Miners within 17-13 with 7:30 remaining in the game. Cunningham's 17-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Tate Jr. gave Middle Tennessee (4-4, 1-3 Conference USA) a 10-0 lead after one quarter.

SEPT 26 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Middle Tennessee QB Chase Cunningham keyed Middle Tennessee's first-ever win over a ranked opponent by throwing for a career-high 408 yards on just 16 completions (25.5 yards a completion). It went down as sixth-most passing yards in a game at MTSU and just the eighth 400-yard game in school history. Cunningham had completions of 98, 89, 71 and 69 yards, with the 98-yarder matching the longest in program history. Cunningham's yards per completion mark was 25.5 and the NCAA single game record is 22.9, but the minimum cutoff is 22 completions, so Cunningham fell just short of an NCAA record. Cunningham also ran for an additional 29 yards and another touchdown in the win. - Conference USA Football

From the beginning of preseason football in 2021 to Wednesday's first practice, Middle Tennessee State quarterback Chase Cunningham has been on quite the roller coaster ride. He began last season competing with highly touted Power 5 transfer Bailey Hockman, who ultimately won the job. When Hockman quit the team after three games, Cunningham took over and performed admirably in his five starts, sparking the MTSU offense. Then, in early November, he tore the ACL in his right knee, once again giving up a position he had fought hard for during his four years with the Blue Raiders.

Cunningham was back on the field Wednesday, again competing for a starting position. But now he's healthy and has the experience from last year."I'm good to go...I'm 100% and ready to roll," said the 5-foot-11, 188-pound Cunningham, a redshirt senior who prepped at Knox Catholic. "I was feeling good today." A storm cut the first practice short by about 45 minutes, but that didn't take away from Cunningham's return after being out nine months. "I'm happy for Chase," coach Rick Stockstill said. "Anytime you have an injury of that magnitude, there's always a little doubt in your mind when you get out there and do it. But he wasn't favoring it or anything. He threw some nice balls in individual (drills). "Chase brings a lot of leadership to the team. The team respects him. I'm glad he's healthy and able to play his last year of college ball." - Daily News Journal

Chase Cunningham passed for 297 yards and four touchdowns, Middle Tennessee scored in every quarter and defeated UConn 44-13 on Friday night. Cunningham had racked up 182 yards and three touchdowns in the first half - including scoring strikes of 25 and 18 yards to Izaiah Gathings and Jimmy Marshall, respectively, on Middle Tennessee's final two possessions before halftime to lead 24-13 at the break. UConn (1-8) had scrapped into a 10-10 tie on a short pass from Steven Krajewski to tight end Brandon Niemenski and a career-long 47-yard field goal by freshman Joe McFadden on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter.

After Middle Tennessee (3-4) broke away with two unanswered touchdowns in less than three minutes, the lead was never threatened again. Cunningham threw completions to 10 receivers, Yusuf Ali led with five catches for 80 yards. Marshall had two TDs on four catches for 61 yards. UConn scored its final points in the final seconds of the first half, settling for a 21-yard McFadden field goal as time ran out after two straight passes from the 4-yard line were broken up in the end zone by Middle Tennessee's Teldrick Ross. Middle Tennessee came into Friday's game third nationally forcing 17 turnovers and had three takeaways against the Huskies, turning them into 12 points. Krajewski completed 21 of 37 passes for 237 yards with a touchdown but was intercepted twice. - Middle Tennessee/AP College Football
