Purdue's passing game is ready to prepare for the next level. Boilermakers quarterback Aidan O'Connell, receiver Charlie Jones and tight end Payne Durham are opting out of the Jan. 2 Citrus Bowl to prepare for the 2023 NFL Draft. "I have decided to opt out of the bowl game," O'Connell wrote on Instagram. "This was an incredibly difficult decision. However, I feel that it is the right one for my family and I. "Ever grateful, ever true." O'Connell completed 64.1% of his passes this year for 3,490 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

His career numbers: 66.7%, 9,219 yards, 65 TDs and 30 INTs. Jones had 110 receptions for 1,361 yards and 12 TDs, and Durham had 56 catches for 560 yards and 8 TDs. O'Connell has had an eventful year, getting married shortly before the season began and dealing with the death of his brother during the season. Current draft projections place him as a potential mid-round pick, Jones is projected as a mid- to late-round pick, and Durham a mid-round pick. - Indianapolis Star/News

Aidan O'Connell threw two touchdown passes and Devin Mockobee ran for another to help the Purdue Boilermakers clinch their first Big Ten West Division title with a 30-16 victory Saturday at Indiana. The Boilermakers (8-4, 6-3) face No. 3 Michigan next weekend in Indianapolis with a chance to win their first conference title since 2000. Purdue also won its fourth Old Oaken Bucket in five games and produced its first back-to-back eight-win seasons since 1997-98. Indiana (4-8, 2-7) lost eight of its last nine - and starting quarterback Dexter Williams II with what appeared to be a serious right leg, non-contact injury late in the first quarter Saturday.

With Williams, the Hoosiers had Purdue's defense on its heels. Without him, they struggled and the Boilermakers eventually took control behind O'Connell and Mockobee. O'Connell got things righted with a 15-yard TD pass to Payne Durham for a 10-7 lead. Mockobee fooled Indiana's defense on third-and-1 on the next series and sprinted 27 yards for a score to make it 17-7. O'Connell's 60-yard TD pass to Charlie Jones and Cory Trice's 8-yard interception for a score in the closing minutes sealed it. It was a stark contrast from the first half when Purdue's opening drive stalled with a field goal then the offense couldn't get anything going. Jaylin Lucas broke free down the left sideline for a 71-yard TD run on Indiana's second play to make it 7-3. The Hoosiers were in scoring position again when Williams was injured but two plays later Charles Campbell missed a 44-yard field goal and all the Hoosiers could muster was one more field goal until the final play. - Purdue/AP College Football

Aidan O'Connell threw two touchdown passes in his final home game and kept the Purdue Boilermakers in contention for the Big Ten West title with a 17-9 victory over Northwestern on Saturday. The former walk-on went 16 of 25 with 159 yards, hooking up with his childhood friend Charlie Jones six times for 46 yards and one score. Purdue (7-4, 5-3 Big Ten) could reach its conference championship game by winning its third straight next week coupled with an Iowa loss. Northwestern (1-10, 1-7) has lost 10 straight since an opening-day win over Nebraska in Ireland, this time in the starting debut of second-year quarterback Cole Freeman. The Wildcats had won the previous five road games in the series.

While the Wildcats kept the score close, they never had a chance to take the lead after O'Connell's throw across the field to Jones, who made an inside cut to evade a defender and took the ball across the goal line for an early 7-0 lead. The Wildcats made it 7-3 on a short field goal early in the second quarter, but O'Connell answered with a 3-yard TD pass to Payne Durham to make it 14-3 at halftime. Northwestern took over at midfield following a partially blocked punt early in the fourth quarter, which set up Evan Hull's 2-yard scoring run. But Freeman's 2-point conversion pass failed to keep it 14-9. Mitchell Fineran's 26-yard field goal with 7:08 left gave Purdue a 17-9 lead and the Boilermakers took the clock down to 22 seconds after its defense forced a late turnover on downs near midfield. Purdue has winning records in consecutive years for the first time since 1997-98 and back-to-back seven-win seasons for the first time since 2006-07. Freeman was 9 of 20 with 78 yards and one interception while losing a fumble. Hull finished with 22 carries for 105 yards. - Purdue/AP College Football

Aidan O'Connell passed for 237 yards and three scores, two to Payne Durham, and Purdue beat No. 21 Illinois 31-24 on Saturday to turn the Big Ten West race into a muddled mess. The win gives the Boilermakers (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) a crucial head-to-head tiebreaker over the Illini (7-3, 4-3 Big Ten), who were firmly in control until losing their last two games. The Boilermakers finish the season with favorable matchups against Northwestern and at Indiana. Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota are still alive in the division, too, entering Saturday with 3-3 records. The Badgers and Hawkeyes were playing each other. Purdue scored on three-straight drives to take a 28-21 lead on Durham's 13-yard touchdown reception with 13:13 left, finishing a drive that was aided by three Illinois penalties.

The Boilermakers gave O'Connell plenty of time and excellent protection all day, holding a highly rated Illinois defense zero sacks while getting to DeVito twice, including a costly 17-yard sack that took the wind out of an Illinois drive in the second half. O'Connell completed 25 of 40 attempts and threw one interception. Devin Mockobee added 106 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. DeVito struggled against pressure and threw his first interception since a Sept. 10 win over Virginia. He completed 18 of 32 passes for 201 yards and a score. Purdue also became the first team to hold Illinois star Chase Brown to fewer than 100 rushing yards this season. The nation's leader in rushing yards also appeared to suffer a leg injury late in the game, when he had to be helped off the field. - Purdue/AP College Football

Aidan O'Connell threw four touchdown passes and Devin Mockobee ran for a career-high 178 yards and another score Saturday as Purdue overpowered Nebraska 43-37. The Boilermakers (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) have won four straight and retained a share of the conference's West Division lead with No. 24 Illinois. Nebraska (3-4, 2-2) had its two-game winning streak under interim coach Mickey Joseph snapped. O'Connell has played well this year, but Mockobee's presence gave the Boilermakers struggling ground game a spark. The combination was electric. Mockabee barreled through defenders, eluded tackles and even showed his shiftiness in the open field. He surpassed his previous single-game rushing total before scoring on a 1-yard run with 35 seconds left in the first half.

Purdue finished with its fifth-highest point total in a Big Ten game since Jeff Brohm arrived in 2017. Trey Palmer was equally impressive, almost single-handedly keeping Nebraska close. He caught a 37-yard TD pass on the fifth play of the second half to cut a 14-point halftime deficit in half and set up a field goal with a 60-yard run on his only carry of the game to make it 27-23. And after TJ Sheffield's 28-yard TD catch extended Purdue's margin to 34-23, Palmer answered on the next series with a 72-yard TD reception. Even when it appeared the Boilermakers sealed the victory with a 2-yard TD pass from O'Connell to Jones with 6:55 left, Palmer answered with a 64-yard reception that set up Anthony Grant's 1-yard TD run to make it 43-37 with 5:55 to go. But Nebraska never got the ball back. - Purdue/AP College Football

Aidan O'Connell threw for 360 yards and two touchdowns, and Purdue held on for a 31-29 victory over Maryland on Saturday when a penalty wiped out the Terrapins' tying 2-point conversion with 35 seconds left. The two teams went scoreless in the second half until a wild finish that included four touchdowns in the final 7:47. Maryland appeared to have tied it when Taulia Tagovailoa found Rakim Jarrett in the corner of the end zone for a 2-point conversion in the final minute, but offensive lineman Delmar Glaze was flagged for an ineligible man downfield penalty, and Tagovailoa threw incomplete on the next attempt. Tagovailoa threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns, but Maryland couldn't produce any points off Purdue's three second-half turnovers.

The Terrapins (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten) broke a 17-all tie on Tagovailoa's 11-yard TD pass to Roman Hemby with 7:47 to play, but Cam Allen blocked the extra point. Then O'Connell, who had fumbled and thrown an interception earlier in the half, calmly guided the Boilermakers 66 yards in 10 plays and threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Payne Durham with 3:19 remaining. After taking the lead, Purdue (4-2, 2-1) forced a Maryland punt with 2:36 left, and although the Terrapins had all three timeouts left, they left Durham all alone over the middle for a 56-yard catch-and-run to the Maryland 2. That set up Devin Mockobee's 1-yard touchdown run with 1:20 left that made it 31-23. Tagovailoa and the Terps responded impressively, pulling within two on an 18-yard scoring pass to Corey Dyches, but Maryland ultimately came up one play short. O'Connell threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Mershawn Rice for a 17-10 lead. That drive was aided by an unnecessary roughness penalty on Maryland's Ahmad McCullough when Purdue would have been facing third-and-long. - Purdue/AP College Football

The Boilermaker Alliance is up and running and the power brokers of the Name, Image and Likeness collective on Purdue's behalf move closer to starting the process of building a bankroll, which will eventually be passed along to the school's athletes. As co-founder Jeff McKean pointed out, those athletes receiving NIL payments will have to earn their paychecks in the form of doing charitable work. That could mean a special appearance by a football player at a non-profit event. It could mean a specified number of social media posts from a recognizable basketball player promoting a worthwhile cause. McKean's group will raise the funds necessary to allow this year's group of athletes to benefit financially from the new landscape of college athletics. But here's one question - what happens in Year 2?

Once money has been collected and distributed to athletes through the 2022-23 athletic year, where does the Boilermaker Alliance turn in the second year? How much more funds will be needed in the second year and beyond? Purdue has plenty of donors who could keep the Alliance's bank account filled for years, but how often will McKean and his group return to the same individual, family or business? "That's going to be the question at every institution that's entered into this," Purdue athletic director Mike Bobinski told the Journal & Courier. "Right now, it's the shiny new object. Everybody is chasing the brass ring and I think the long-term viability and impact is yet to be determined. "I can't predict it with any certainty; I don't know but I do know it's not intended to be a one-year thing. This is meant to be a sustainable situation and that's why we're trying to structure ours in a way that provides that foundation for long-term sustainability instead of making a big splash right now and making a lot of headlines. That's not the way we were ever going to do this." - Journal and Courier

In April, espn.com reported that 22 of the 130 FBS-level schools planned to provide academic bonus payments by the end of this academic year. Add Purdue, with returning starting quarterback Aiden O'Connell, to the growing list of athletic departments that will begin paying student-athletes for academic achievement. "We are working on a plan for that this fall," athletic director Mike Bobinski said Tuesday night during the Boilermakers on the Road event at Victory Field. If student-athletes reach certain academic benchmarks, the payments are capped at $5,980 per school year. What those benchmarks are at Purdue are still being finalized.

Last summer, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Alston v. NCAA case that the organization's limits to athlete compensation for education-related costs are in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The ruling permits institutions to provide direct financial support to student-athletes while also allowing the NCAA to cap cash awards at $5,980. Schools have the option to provide benefits or bonuses but are not required to do it. In November, Mississippi and Texas were the first schools to begin distributing checks to athletes. According to si.com, Mississippi will spend $2.48 million on more than 400 athletes. Oklahoma State will provide the financial benefit to all of its scholarship athletes who qualify this fall. OSU will use money from its fundraising group called POSSE. - Journal and Courier

Aidan O'Connell's summer is jammed packed. He'll attend the Tee Off for Tyler (Trent) Charity Golf Classic on June 6 at Carmel's Bridgewater Club. He's scheduled to be a camp counselor at the Manning Passing Academy in Louisiana in late June. He's getting married on July 30, six days before Purdue begins preseason practices for the 2022 season. The second-team All-Big Ten quarterback will also continue summer workouts with his teammates. And there will be time for golf. O'Connell is normally humble when discussing his athletic achievements on the football field but put a golf club in his hand and the self-confidence comes to the surface.

He's a self-made golfer, watching YouTube videos to learn the game. He shoots in the low 80s. "I'm pretty good," he said. "I'm one of the better guys on the team. I love to play. I've played my whole life but really started to play when I got to college." O'Connell, who is hosting his own passing camp on June 11 at Harrison, will find time to play golf at Purdue, Battle Ground Golf Club and Ravines Golf Course, or anywhere else throughout the summer. His golf game doesn't get in the way of his offseason work to lead the Boilermakers into the 2022 season. The invitation to the Manning Passing Academy, which former Purdue quarterback David Blough attended in 2017 and 2018, came as a bit of surprise, even though it shouldn't have been based on what O'Connell accomplished last season. O'Connell wasn't part of the FBS recruiting process in high school, opting to attend Purdue as a walk-on. - Journal and Courier

Thanks to Name, Image and Likeness, Purdue quarterback Aidan O'Connell can parlay two of his passions into one venture. The Illinois native, who returns to the Boilermakers for his sixth year, will hold the Aidan O'Connell Passing Camp on Saturday, June 11 at Harrison. "I just wanted to have a camp and give back to the community," O'Connell said. "I love kids, I love working with kids. I have a lot of fun doing that." O'Connell, who threw for 3,712 yards and 28 touchdowns while earning All-Big Ten second-team honors last season, plans to donate his proceeds to a charity foundation. "I wanted to do some NIL stuff to give back to the community because they are so supportive," he said. - Journal and Courier

2021 ALL-BIG TEN SECOND TEAM (COACHES): QB Aidan O'Connell, Purdue,...O'Connell earned second team all-conference honors, the first Purdue quarterback to be named to one of the first two All-Big Ten teams since Kyle Orton in 2004. The fifth-year senior is one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the country, completing 73.5 percent of his passes to lead the Big Ten and rank third nationally. That completion percentage is currently tied for the best in Big Ten history (Dan Persa, Northwestern - 2010) and seven percent higher than the school record (David Blough - 2018). Despite splitting time at points of the season, O'Connell has thrown for 3,177 yards (17th nationally) and 23 touchdowns (25th nationally). The gunslinger has produced five 300-yard games, the first Purdue quarterback to accomplish the feat since Blough in 2016. - Purdue Football

Purdue came into the Music City Bowl short-handed and banged-up, particularly at wide receiver. The Boilermakers are going home winners after a game that had people clicking over to catch an amazing finish. Mitchell Fineran kicked a 39-yard field goal in overtime and Purdue finished off its best season since 2003 by overcoming a 14-point deficit and beating Tennessee 48-45 on Thursday in a record-setting Music City Bowl. Purdue's Aidan O'Connell threw for 534 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions.

He couldn't explain the final five minutes of regulation as the teams combined to score four TDs - two apiece. "It's why you love the game, it's why it keeps bringing you back," O'Connell said. "The fact it's unknown. No one knows what's going to happen. It's not a movie or TV show where the actors get retries. It seems like the world's watching and anything could happen." Purdue (9-4) tied for the second-most wins in program history as only the 12th team in the Boilermakers' 134-year history to win nine games. They also won their fifth game away from home, something they hadn't done since 1943. "We found a way to just barely win," Purdue coach Jeff Brohm said. - Purdue/AP College Football

No one outside of the Brohm brothers - Jeff and Brian - really knew much about Aidan O'Connell when he arrived as a walk-on in 2017. At that time, O'Connell was just another quarterback looking to measure his skills against other quarterbacks at the Big Ten level, bypassing an opportunity to play at a Division III program to chase his dream. O'Connell had the confidence he could play, but would the native of Long Grove, Illinois ever get the chance to prove himself before his eligibility was exhausted? Move ahead five years and now Purdue fans couldn't wait to hear from O'Connell about whether he would return for his sixth season. The announcement came Monday that O'Connell will return for the 2022 season, giving the Boilermakers their starting quarterback nine months before the opener. "It's just been a crazy road," O'Connell said. "I definitely could not have seen this going this way, but I'm very happy it did. Hopefully, a lot more good memories here." - Journal and Courier

Aidan O'Connell will return for one last ride as Purdue's quarterback. O'Connell, who has been intermittently starting since the end of the 2019 season and fully captured the role midway through the 2021 season, announced his intent to return to the program for one more season in a Monday morning tweet. The tweet also confirmed he would play in the upcoming Music City Bowl against Tennessee in Nashville. O'Connell began his Purdue career as a walk-on, seeing the field for the first time as a junior during an October game against Penn State. He would get his first significant snaps after then-redshirt freshman Jack Plummer injured his ankle late in the Boilermakers' 2019 game against Nebraska. - Purdue Exponent

Aidan O'Connell tied a career high with four touchdown passes and Zander Horvath ran for another score Saturday as Purdue won the Old Oaken Bucket for the first time since 2018 with a 44-7 victory over Indiana. The Boilermakers (8-4, 6-3 Big Ten) have won four of five to post their highest single-season victory total since 2006. It was the most lopsided game in the series since 2008 when Purdue won 62-10 in the late Joe Tiller's final regular-season game as coach. Indiana (2-10, 0-9) lost its last eight games, finishing its first winless season in league play since 2011. But the annual in-state battle, which was canceled twice last season because of COVID-19, certainly carried some of the traditional rivalry themes. There were big plays, hard hits, loud chants and plenty of penalties on a rainy, windy afternoon that eventually gave way to clearing skies as night fell over cold, sold out Ross-Ade Stadium.

Purdue took control with a quick start. Horvath capped the opening possession with a 1-yard scoring plunge that was originally ruled a fumble and recovered by the Boilermakers in the end zone. Indiana tied the score on a 2-yard run from Donaven McCulley and then Purdue started pulling away. O'Connell's 24-yard TD pass to Paul Piferi broke the tie early in the second quarter and Mitchell Finneran's 32-yard field gave Purdue a 17-7 halftime lead. The Boilermakers sealed it early in the second half when O'Connell threw TD passes on each of the first two drives - 21 yards to Jackson Anthrop and 5 yards to T.J. Sheffield - to make it 31-7 midway through the third. O'Connell threw a 20-yard pass to David Bell before departing early in the fourth. O'Connell was 26 of 31 with 278 yards. Bell had six catches for 79 yards in what could be his final home game. - Purdue/AP College Football

Aidan O'Connell threw three touchdown passes to Milton Wright on Saturday to lead Purdue to a 32-14 victory over Northwestern at Wrigley Field. O'Connell was 29 for 39 for 423 yards and Wright had 213 yards on eight catches — both career highs - to help the Boilermakers (7-4, 5-3 Big Ten) erase memories of last weekend's 59-31 drubbing at Ohio State. "Today was my day and I had to execute," Wright said. "(O'Connell) is a great quarterback and I'm happy I could make the plays." Evan Hull had 96 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries as the Wildcats (3-8, 1-7) dropped their fifth straight.

The Boilermakers never trailed and scored touchdowns on their first two possessions of the second half to give themselves some breathing room. Wright, who'd never caught more than one touchdown before Saturday, had scoring catches of 17 and 45 yards in the third quarter to cap his best game. David Bell had 12 receptions for 101 yards and seemed to draw more attention from the Wildcats. It left Wright in frequent mismatches on the left side of the field. "They were covering David and it left a lot of one-on-one opportunities on that side of the field," O'Connell said. "We had to take advantage of those." - Purdue/AP College Football

Purdue coach Jeff Brohm already had a reputation for running trick plays - and for leading his unranked team to upsets of top-5 opponents. His Boilermakers added to that legacy on Saturday. Aidan O'Connell matched his career high by throwing three touchdown passes - including one on a reverse, flea-flicker screen pass to Jackson Anthrop - and Purdue toppled a Big Ten giant for the second time this season, beating No. 5 Michigan State 40-29 and leaving the conference without an unbeaten team. "We run a multitude of trick plays, you guys have seen that," Brohm said. "This is one we do, kind of double reverse stuff, you know, throw it behind the line of scrimmage. To be honest with you, I stole it from a YouTube video of a high school team years ago and the first time we ran it, it went for a touchdown." For Brohm, exotic gadget plays have been a regular feature even before he arrived on Purdue's campus. In fact, his innovative play-calling was one reason the Boilermakers hired him from Western Kentucky after the 2016 season.

This time, the beautifully executed gimmick - O'Connell handed off to Anthrop on an end-around, who gave it to receiver Milton Wright on a reverse, who pitched it back to O'Connell, who tossed a screen to Anthrop - resulted in a 39-yard touchdown that set the stage for something bigger. The score put the Boilermakers ahead 21-7, and Purdue went on to control most of the game against the previously unbeaten Spartans (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten, No. 3 CFP). Purdue (6-2, 4-2), pulled off its second top-five upset in four weeks, became bowl-eligible for the first time in three years and extended its FBS record for wins by an unranked team over a top-five foe to 17 - three of them under Brohm. The Boilermakers shocked No. 2 Iowa 24-7 on the Hawkeyes' home field last month. Purdue also stunned then-No. 2 Ohio State 49-20 on Oct. 20, 2018. - Purdue/AP College Football

Purdue didn't let a bad performance in its previous game carry over to the next one. Aidan O'Connell threw for two touchdowns, Purdue intercepted four of Adrian Martinez's passes, and the Boilermakers beat Nebraska 28-23 on Saturday. Purdue (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) bounced back from last week's home loss to Wisconsin to move within one win of bowl eligibility for the first time in four years. "We know we didn't play good last week," O'Connell said. "It was probably our worst game of the season offensively. So we knew we could play better. It wasn't like we were pondering if we can play football. We know we can play good football." Nebraska (3-6, 1-5) lost its third straight game and would have to win out against Ohio State, Wisconsin and Iowa to get to a bowl for the first time in five years. The Huskers entered the game as a touchdown favorite, and the loss is certain to ratchet up the pressure another notch on fourth-year coach Scott Frost. Nebraska was coming off an open date following its 30-23 loss at Minnesota and had two touchdowns and a field goal on its first four possessions. But the Huskers fell flat coming out of halftime. - Purdue/AP College Football

Purdue needed backup quarterback Aidan O'Connell to deliver in a pinch Saturday. He may have saved their bowl hopes. After relieving Jack Plummer in the third quarter and throwing interceptions on his first two series, the fifth-year senior capped a 94-yard scoring march drive with a 14-yard scoring toss to T.J. Sheffield for the game's only touchdown and a 13-9 victory over Illinois. "We just felt like because we became one-dimensional, we think Aidan is our most accurate thrower and that's not a knock on Jack," Purdue coach Jeff Brohm said. "He stands in there. he's poised, he played to the end and he helped us find a way to win." It sure wasn't easy under the circumstances.

The Boilermakers (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) started the day without their best receiver, their top two running backs and lost starting tight end Payne Durham in the first half after a jarring hit knocked his helmet loose. After leading Purdue to field goals on its first two series, Plummer couldn't muster another score, so Brohm changed quarterbacks and O'Connell made the game-turning play for the touchdown with 5:44 left in the game. Purdue's defense clinched the victory by forcing a turnover on downs in its own red zone. Illinois (1-4, 1-2) has lost four straight since a season-opening win over Nebraska. - Purdue/AP College Football

Aidan O'Connell passed for two touchdowns and Purdue hung on to beat a COVID-19-decimated Illinois team that was down to its fourth-string quarterback, 31-24, on Saturday in a game marred by player absences and moments of utter confusion. Sophomore Coran Taylor found himself at the Illini helm on his team's second possession, following what appeared to be an ankle injury to last-minute starter Matt Robinson. Taylor threw for two touchdowns and was intercepted twice. Starting QB Brandon Peters was announced as a scratch shortly before kickoff after testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.

Peters' backup, Isaiah Washington, also missed the game due to contact-tracing protocols, said Illinois spokesman Kent Brown. Also among the missing was field-goal kicker James McCourt. Despite all of its player issues, Illinois (0-2, 0-2 Big Ten) still made a game of it and was within seven points and 15 yards of tying the game with less than two minutes to play. Taylor's pass fell short and the Boilermakers (2-0, 2-0) took over on downs, sealing the victory. The game was played without spectators and, for the most part, without updated official statistics available in the press box. - Purdue/AP College Football
