*Parker Washington, Penn State, Player News

Penn State's top target is off to the NFL. Parker Washington, the Nittany Lions' leading receiver this fall, declared for the 2023 NFL draft on Friday afternoon via social media. Washington will not play in the Rose Bowl after suffering an undisclosed season-ending injury in November. Despite that injury, Washington was Penn State's most prolific threat in the passing game. He finished the regular season with a team-leading 46 catches and 611 yards, plus two touchdowns. His 61.1 yards per game ranked sixth in the Big Ten.

Washington leading the receiver room wasn't a surprise. In 2020, he earned freshman All-America honors with 36 catches, 489 yards and six touchdowns in a COVID-shortened nine-game season. Last fall, Washington was second in receiving again to Jahan Dotson, this time recording 64 receptions, 820 yards and five scores. Washington was a big-play threat. The Texas native had 30 receptions of 20-plus yards (10 in 2022, 12 in 2021, eight in 2020). Most notably, Washington ripped off a memorable 59-yard catch-and-run touchdown against Ohio State in October - a play that made him stand out on the national stage opposite the Buckeyes' wideouts. - Penn Live

Penn State is in desperate need of production at wide receiver with Jahan Dotson's departure for the NFL. The common line of thinking is that there will be a by-committee approach to make up for the lost receptions and yardage. However, there's a breakout candidate on the roster who has already proven what he's capable of in some of Penn State's biggest games last season. Wide receiver Parker Washington is dynamic with the ball in his hands and that's going to be the hardest part of Dotson's game to replace.

The sophomore has the lower body strength to run through tacklers but can make opponents miss with relative ease when he has space. Not to mention, he had nine catches for 108 yards against Ohio State with Dotson on the field and then seven catches for 98 yards against Arkansas without him. Washington is unlikely to be as good as his predecessor, but he still has a golden opportunity to be the most valuable piece of the offense in 2022. - Centre Times

Penn State announced its theme games for the 2022 football season Wednesday afternoon, including its White Out game. The Nittany Lions will take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Oct. 22 in the White Out, in a game that will also serve as homecoming at Beaver Stadium and the yearly "Generations of Greatness" game - featuring Penn State's alternate uniforms. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. for the game. The White Out was one of seven theme games announced by the program in a video on its Twitter account.

One of the other key games announced was the Stripe Out game against Ohio State on Oct. 29. The game against the Buckeyes will be the first with fans at Beaver Stadium that isn't a White Out since 2009 when the program chose Iowa for the yearly game. This year's game against the Buckeyes does not have a scheduled kickoff, but it is not expected to be a night game. - Centre Times
