Garrett Shrader hit Oronde Gadsden II with a pair of touchdown passes, Sean Tucker scored on a 25-yard run late, and No. 18 Syracuse beat No. 15 North Carolina State 24-9 on Saturday to remain unbeaten and become eligible for the postseason. Syracuse (6-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) started a season with six wins for just the third time since 1935, taking advantage of the absence of the Wolfpack's injured star quarterback, Devin Leary. Hurt last week in a win over Florida State, Leary was declared out for the rest of the season before the game. The preseason conference player of the year suffered a torn pectoral muscle and will undergo surgery next week in Florida. He's expected to make a full recovery. The Orange took the opening kickoff and scored in short fashion, driving 65 yards in five plays in just 2:04. Tucker's 38-yard run set up Shrader's 12-yard touchdown pass to Gadsden, his fourth scoring catch of the season. North Carolina State (5-2, 1-2), with Charleston Southern graduate transfer Jack Chambers making his first start at quarterback, struggled on offense.

Syracuse outgained N.C. State 113-55 in the first half and the Orange's 10-3 lead at the break almost seemed too much to overcome in front of a raucous sellout crowd in the newly renamed JMA Wireless Dome. Still, Chambers got the Wolfpack rolling on the first possession of the second half. He hit Christopher Toudle for 21 yards on a third-and-10 play and an 8-yard completion to Thayer Thomas moved the ball to the Syracuse 12. But a bad snap and a false start penalty on consecutive plays forced the Wolfpack to settle for Christopher Dunn's 22-yard field goal. Shrader's 17-yard scoring pass to Gadsden late in the third boosted the Syracuse lead to 17-6. The Wolfpack couldn't answer as Chambers, who had moved the team to the Orange 8-yard line, was sacked leading to a third field goal. Tucker's touchdown run came with just over 2 minutes left to ice the game. - Syracuse/AP College Football

Sean Tucker ran for three touchdowns and a career-high 232 yards, Garrett Shrader threw for one score and ran for another, and Syracuse defeated Wagner 59-0 on Saturday to remain unbeaten. With the win, the Orange moved to 5-0, the program’s first 5-0 start since 1987 when Syracuse went 11-0. Wagner (0-4), a Championship Subdivision team, has now lost 24 straight games and is winless under third-year head coach Tom Masella. The Seahawks have not won a game since beating Long Island University on Sept. 28, 2019 and have been outscored 152-14 over their past three games. Shrader ran it in from the 1-yard line just over three minutes in to begin the rout, and Tucker broke off a 60-yard run six minutes later. Tucker also scored on runs of four and six yards, all coming in the first half.

The Orange led 49-0 at halftime. Both teams agreed to then play two, 10-minute quarters after halftime due to the lopsided score. The Orange amassed 631 yards of total offense and its defense limited the Seahawks to 50 yards on 38 plays, four first downs, and sacked quarterback Ryan Kraft three times. Cornerback Duce Chestnut intercepted Kraft and returned it 28 yards for a score. Shrader completed all 17 passes of his passes for 238 yards and spread the ball to eight different receivers before being removed after three quarters. Freshman LeQuint Allen rushed for 112 yards, including a 90-yard run, and scored from eight yards out. Kraft was 2-of-6 passing for just 19 yards. - AP College Football

Sean Tucker rushed for 98 yards and scored two touchdowns, one on a 55-yard catch-and-run, and quarterback Garrett Shrader threw for two scores and ran for another as Syracuse beat Louisville 31-7 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night. Louisville had won the past three meetings in the series - all at Cardinal Stadium, -averaging 42.3 points, and was 7-1 against the Orange since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2014. The script was flipped in this one as Syracuse built an early 17-7 lead behind a new-look offense, and the Orange defense never let Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham get rolling. He was intercepted twice in the third quarter and lost a fumble early in the fourth, and the Orange converted two of the turnovers into touchdowns. Last year, he accounted for six touchdowns against Syracuse in the first half of a 41-3 victory.

Shrader finished 18 of 25 for 237 yards passing and gained 95 yards rushing on 16 carries. Cunningham finished 16 of 22 for 152 yards passing, rushed for 34 yards on 13 carries, and was sacked three times. Syracuse finished 5-7 last year and closed the season with three straight lopsided losses to miss the postseason. That led to an overhaul of the staff. The architects of Virginia's potent offense - offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck - were hired in the offseason to jumpstart the offense and their imprint showed up right away in this one. Shrader completed 7 of 8 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown in the first quarter - the biggest play the 55-yard catch-and-run by Tucker down the right side for a 10-0 lead after Andre Szmyt had given Syracuse an early lead with a 31-yard field goal. - Syracuse/AP College Football

Syracuse football has only one place to go from its preseason ACC Atlantic Division ranking: up. For the second straight year, the Orange were voted to finish last in their division in the ACC Preseason Poll. This is the last season the conference will play under divisions as it moves to a 3-5-5 scheduling model in 2023. The All-ACC preseason team is voted upon by media who attend ACC Kickoff. There were 164 total voters. Clemson was picked to win the Atlantic and the ACC, while Miami was voted to win the Coastal Division.

This is the fifth consecutive year Clemson has been predicted to finish atop its division even though it was not No. 1 at the end of the 2021 season. Last year, the Orange finished at the bottom of the division with a 5-7 overall record. The program earned just two conference wins against Virginia Tech and Boston College in consecutive weeks. However, three of SU's losses were by three points. Syracuse returns the majority of its 2021 starters, including running back Sean Tucker, quarterback Garrett Shrader, linebacker Mikel Jones and cornerback Garrett Williams. - The Post-Standard

Fans of Sean Tucker will be pleased by Syracuse football's most recent announcement. The program officially launched Tucker's 2022 Heisman Trophy campaign Monday, complete with a hashtag and microsite. The hashtag, "#PL34SED," is a play on Tucker's frequent use of the word when evaluating his performances via Twitter postgame. He even used it in his commitment announcement back in 2020. The website features videos and stories to get to know Tucker better, a link to his official merchandise, his highlights and stats, a list of his awards and the official campaign hype video.

The Heisman Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football. It is named for American football player, coach and sportswriter John W. Heisman. Syracuse legend Ernie Davis is the program's only player to ever win the Heisman Trophy. He became the first African-American recipient of the award when he won it in 1961 following a standout season. Davis rushed for 823 yards and 15 touchdowns, breaking multiple program records. Two seasons prior, he'd helped lead SU to its lone national title. Orange quarterback Don McPherson was a runner-up for the trophy in 1987, losing to Notre Dame wide receiver Tim Brown. - The Post-Standard

Sean Tucker was a hot topic during Syracuse football's appearances at ACC Kickoff, despite not being in attendance. The running back was not one of SU's attendees because the program chose to bring two of its team captains - linebacker Mikel Jones and offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron - and its starting quarterback, Garrett Shrader, a team spokesman told Syracuse.com. All 14 ACC programs brought their QBs to the event. Orange football coach Dino Babers called Tucker "relentless" before going on to explain that Tucker is working out "all the time," including over the 2021 Christmas break.

Even while running for the SU track team this spring, Tucker never missed a football practice. "Without hesitation I'll tell everybody in the room that I believe he is better," Babers said. "I'm saying that being modest that he is not the same. He is actually better than last year. I'm really excited to see what he can do in 2022." Jones also had high praise for his teammate and how he helps makes Syracuse's defense better. "If you come to practice thinking you can get through with half effort, (Tucker's) gonna make you lace up your cleats real fast and get locked in," Jones said. "Just doing that every day, day-in, day-out knowing we're not gonna see another running back like him all season, honestly, it makes us better every day." - The Post-Standard

Syracuse running back Sean Tucker has made another preseason All-America team. The Walter Camp Football Foundation released its 2022 Preseason All-America teams Monday. Tucker was named to the second team. He was also named to the second team at the end of the season in 2021. Tucker was already named to the Phil Steele Preseason All-American third team. He was also featured on the publication's All-ACC first team and was No. 6 among 2023 draft-eligible FBS running backs. ESPN's Mel Kiper also has Tucker in his 2023 draft rankings. In 2021, Tucker set a single-season rushing record for Syracuse football, logging 1,496 yards on 246 attempts. His season-high for a single game was 207 against Boston College.   Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack knows the 2022 Orange football schedule is daunting. As of Friday, he's still confident in coach Dino Babers to lead the program through it. "Dino's not on the hot seat," Wildhack said, and then repeated, during a media availability previewing the upcoming athletic year. "I'm really pleased with what we've done in the past six months, and I think it is a table setter for what we can accomplish in 2022 and beyond." The statement came hours after the announcement that the ACC is switching to a 3-5-5 scheduling model for football starting in 2023.

The new format is expected to ease the schedules of programs like Syracuse, which has had to face ACC top-dog Clemson every year since it joined the conference. "I think it's really good for the conference. I think it's really good for the brand. We get to play each other more frequently," Wildhack said. "I think that's good for ACC football...And I think it's good for Syracuse." But Babers, now in his seventh year with the program, has produced just one winning season for the Orange. Syracuse went 10-3 in 2018, then two years later - albeit during the altered COVID-19 season - went 1-10. That year, Babers was Syracuse University's highest-paid employee, according to recent Syracuse.com reporting. - The Post-Standard

Both players were ranked within their position groups in ESPN's Mel Kiper's 2023 NFL Draft rankings released Tuesday. Tucker, who broke Syracuse's single-season rushing record with 1,496 yards in 2021, came in at No. 8 among running backs. The All-American is the only ACC player at his position in the Top 10. He finished tied for sixth in rushing yards and fourth in rushing yards per game in the FBS. - Post-Standard

It was a slog for the Syracuse offense in the first half. Four false starts. Zero points. Just six first downs and 118 yards. Then Sean Tucker, the nation's leading rusher, broke one up the middle for a 51-yard score midway through the third quarter Saturday and Syracuse (5-4, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) was on the way to a 21-6 win over longtime rival Boston College (4-4, 0-4 ACC). The Orange's second straight victory left them on the cusp of bowl eligibility. "There's no doubt that ignited us," Syracuse coach Dino Babers said. "But I also I think back to the defense being able to keep touchdowns off the board and keeping them to field goals, keeping us within reach and within hope of one quick strike, whether it goes through the air or on the ground." Quarterback Garrett Shrader scored on a long run shortly after Tucker's burst - a 48-yarder down the left sideline - and Courtney Jackson ran back a line drive punt 66 yards for another touchdown, part of a three-touchdown blitz in a five-minute span to overcome a 6-0 BC lead. "We didn't come out ready to play. The defense did a great job getting stops, not giving up a touchdown," Shrader said. "They had our number early on and maybe we weren't ready for it, but we figured it out in the second half." The loss was the fourth straight for the Eagles. - Syracuse/AP College Football

The Syracuse defense yielded just 135 yards and sacked Albany quarterbacks eight times but it was running back Sean Tucker who stole the show. Tucker had 132 yards rushing and scored five touchdowns to lead the Orange (2-1) to a 62-24 win over the Great Danes (0-3). Playing without leading wide receiver Taj Harris, who was out with an undisclosed injury, Syracuse amassed 623 yards of offense.

Tucker's day included touchdown runs of 56, 26, 12 and eight yards and a 72-yard screen pass from Garrett Shrader in the first game between the upstate New York teams. Four of his scores came in the first half when Syracuse built a 45-10 lead. He also had 121 yards receiving. Tucker came one touchdown short of tying Jim Brown's single-game RB record for touchdowns. The Orange defense held the Great Danes (0-3) to two first downs and 67 yards in the first 30 minutes. Tommy DeVito and Shrader shared time at quarterback for Syracuse. DeVito was 6 of 9 for 147 yards and one touchdown. Shrader was 11 of 15 for 190 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 42 yards and two scores. Damien Alford scored on a 73-yard pass from DeVito for the first touchdown of his Syracuse career. - Syracuse Football/AP College Football

Sean Tucker set a career high with 181 rushing yards and a touchdown as Syracuse pulled away from Ohio in the second half for a 29-9 win in its season opener on Saturday. The Orange scored nine points in the first quarter and never looked back. Tucker broke free for a 47-yard run on Syracuse's second offensive play to put the Orange in the red zone and Tommy DeVito scampered for a 6-yard score.

Syracuse then took advantage of a muffed kickoff and forced a safety by tackling De'Montre Tuggle in the end zone. "I thought it was a good performance," Syracuse head coach Dino Babers said. "That's not a gimme football team. That's a football team that's going to challenge for their side of the conference. The foundation that coach (Frank) Solich has left there and the way they do things, they're really first class. They're a difficult bunch to beat and very seldom do they ever quit." DeVito played his first game after suffering a season-ending leg injury in Syracuse's fourth game of the 2020 season, connecting on 11 of 17 passes for 92 yards and added 47 yards on the ground. - Syracuse/AP College Football

Syracuse running back Sean Tucker is one of 82 preseason candidates for the Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation's top running back. Tucker ran for 626 yards in nine games last year, the third-highest total by an Orange freshman. Among freshmen, his 69.6 yards per game average was second to only Syracuse all-time leading rusher Joe Morris. Ten semifinalists will be named in November. That list will be trimmed to three finalists. The award committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. - The Post-Standard

Syracuse's running back room rapidly depleted early last season. It gets a clean slate this summer with a quartet of backs that have produced in games, working behind a healthy offensive line to try to improve one of the nation's worst rushing attacks. All eyes will be fixated on the quarterback competition this summer, but the ground game might be more important to SU's success. "To me, that's what football is all about," coach Dino Babers said at the end of spring. "If it was a 7-on-7 league, it'd be on ABC and ESPN and everybody would be running around with their flags on, and they'd have all kind of major sponsors. "That's not what football is. Football is about taking somebody and moving them someplace they don't want to go against their will." Sean Tucker, the team's breakout star on offense last year, leads a deep group of backs that includes two players who sat out the 2020 season amid the coronavirus pandemic. Babers, during an in-house interview last month for donors and season-ticket holders, said Tucker is coming off "an amazing year" and is "very, very good." "We expect big things out of him," Babers said. - The Post-Standard
