2022 ALL-SEC FIRST TEAM (COACHES): LB Drew Sanders, Arkansas,...Drew Sanders earned first-team praise at linebacker after emerging as one of the top defensive playmakers in college football this season. A finalist for the Butkus Award, the Denton, Texas, native racked up a team-leading 103 total tackles with a team-high 13.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks in 12 games.

All-SEC linebacker Drew Sanders will declare for the NFL Draft and will not play in Arkansas' game against Kansas at the Liberty Bowl. Sanders, who has one season of eligibility remaining, is the third Razorback to declare for the draft since the end of the regular season. Center Ricky Stromberg and receiver Jadon Haselwood have also said they will enter the draft, and neither is expected to play in the bowl game. "I've enjoyed playing in college," Sanders told ESPN. "It's always been a dream for me to play in the NFL, ever since I can remember. There's an opportunity for me to take, and I want to take it." Sanders was a break-out star on Arkansas' defense this year. He led the team with 113 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. His sack total was second to Alabama's Will Anderson (10) in the SEC. - Northwest Arkansas Times

The University of Arkansas and LSU didn't work out a football trade in the offseason, it just looked that way. The Razorbacks and Tigers, SEC West rivals, swapped two players each on defense. Arkansas lost defensive backs Joe Foucha and Greg Brooks, both Louisiana natives, to LSU. The Razorbacks added cornerback Dwight McGlothern, who started six games for LSU last season, and Tigers defensive end Landon Jackson. Arkansas has four transfers from other SEC teams, including linebacker Drew Sanders (Alabama) and safety Latavious Brini (Georgia).

Sanders is set to be a starter, while Brini, McGlothern and Jackson all figure to be on the two-deep chart. "A big thing for me was trying to stay in the SEC," said Sanders, who is from Denton, Texas. "But between staying in the SEC, I wanted to be closer to home, too." Sanders, a junior who played in 12 games at Alabama last season with three starts, said he also considered Oklahoma and Texas, both Big 12 teams that will join the SEC no later than the 2025 season. In the end, Arkansas and the SEC won out with Sanders over the Sooners and Longhorns. "There's a big sense of pride with playing in the SEC," Sanders said. "And I just still wanted to be a part of that." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Linebacker Bumper Pool touted the adaptability of Drew Sanders, who transferred from Alabama over the winter. "What we're asking of Drew, we're not asking a lot of other guys to do," Pool said. "He's going down and rushing the passer off the edge and also coming back with me and playing a standup linebacker. His skill set is so versatile that whenever he makes a mistake doing something he gets - not down on himself - but he wants to be a perfectionist. "So just continuing to tell him, 'Hey, listen. You're doing so many good things. You don't need to get down on yourself because there's a certain mistake that you make having to go back from on the edge to back to linebacker.' But he's picking it up well." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Arkansas could find a pass rush as the season progresses, but as of now, there's no sign of significant threats the Alabama offensive line will have to neutralize. Last year, the Razorbacks finished second to last in sacks per game in the SEC with 1.85. By comparison, Alabama averaged 3.80. And Arkansas is losing some of its better rushers from 2021. It will be without its two most productive pass rushers in Tre Williams (six sacks) and Hayden Henry (four). The Razorbacks did add players through the portal who might help, including former Alabama five-star linebacker Drew Sanders. - Montgomery Advertiser
