*Jaquelin Roy, LSU, Player News
|
After emerging as a starter in his third season, junior defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy declared Tuesday for the 2023 NFL Draft. Roy became the fifth eligible LSU player to turn pro early, and now the Tigers have to find more options at a position without much proven depth. He did not clarify his status for the Citrus Bowl. Roy, a Baton Rouge native, had two more years of eligibility. He followed senior defensive back Jay Ward, junior edge rusher BJ Ojulari and senior wide receiver Jaray Jenkins in declar ing for the draft. Junior defensive back Mekhi Garner is also headed for the league after accepting an invitation to a postseason showcase. A rotational player his first two years, Roy turned into a key piece of the defensive line this season. Starting a ll but one game, Roy recorded 49 tackles, 3 ½ tackles for loss, three quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

By most accounts out of preseason camp, Jaquelin Roy is poised for a breakout season in 2022. While he's made just one start in 22 career games, he's currently starting at nose tackle on a line that includes end Ali Gaye, big end Maason Smith and stand-u p edge rusher BJ Ojulari, a preseason first-team All-Southeastern Conference pick. Despite playing for his third defensive line coach in three seasons, Roy feels more comfortable in a position that will have him playing mostly over the center instead of burly, squatty guards.Roy added 15 pounds to his frame over the spring and summer to complete the move - which he was "sketchy" about initially, but couldn't be happier about now. "I don't know too many centers that are just going to block me one- on-one," he said. "When I was playing the three-technique (as a tackle), I struggled with taking the inside step before I got out vertically. "I'm in an even stance in the nose, so I can step right in and lift whatever the offensive lineman is doing. I c an make a play fast. I can be a disturbance." Roy explained that in lining up over the center, he can use his quickness to cause the player to snap the ball over the quarterback's head, make a bad snap in general or even cause a false start. "That feels real good," he said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Five returning players most likely to put together breakout seasons in 2022: Jaquelin Roy, junior defensive tackle,...At 6-3, 315 pounds, Roy could be an important run stuffer for the LSU defensive front. He left the spring as a starter, but there will b e plenty of players pushing him in the fall. As a rotational player, he had 30 tackles and six for negative yardage in 2021. With only one start over his last two seasons, Roy seems poised for a big season if he locks down a starting spot. - Baton Rouge Advocate
