 *Anthony Richardson, Florida, Player News

Florida football coach Billy Napier said he understood quarterback Anthony Richardson's decision to declare for the NFL Draft. Richardson won't play in the bowl game. "Anthony sees an opportunity," Napier said. "He's going to work extremely hard to solidify his position in the draft and, you know, [he] did a lot for the Gators, man. You know, and certainly proud of him as a person and the way he went about his business and represented this place." Richardson had some growing pains early in the season but started all 12 games for the Gators and improved as the season progressed, finishing the year with 2,549 yards passing, 17 TDs and nine interceptions along with 654 yards rushing and 9 rushing TDs. "Made a ton of progress," Napier said. "You know, just, most importantly I think as a person, comfort with the role, you know, the leadership aspect. And certainly, I thought [he] made a lot of progress when it comes to football intelligence and defensive structure, protections." - Gainesville Sun

On Monday, Florida's starting quarterback Anthony Richardson announced he was opting out of the bowl game to begin his preparation for the NFL draft. Richardson completed 53% of his passes this season for 2,549 yards with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Richardson was also a threat on the ground, running for 654 yards and nine touchdowns. His absence leaves the Gators extremely thin at the quarterback position. Backup Jalen Kitna was excused from the squad last week following his arrest on child pornography charges. No other quarterback on the roster has thrown a pass this season. - Gazette Times

Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson, considered more of a long-term project than a slam-dunk prospect, is leaving school early and entering the NFL draft. Richardson announced his decision with a lengthy social media post Monday, four days after backup quarterback Jalen Kitna was kicked off the team following his arrest on child pornography charges. Richardson's departure leaves freshman Max Brown, Ohio State transfer Jack Miller or walk-on Kyle Engel to make his first career start in the Las Vegas Bowl against 17th-ranked Oregon State (9-3) on Dec. 17. In his post, Richardson thanked just about everyone who had a role in his college career, including coach Billy Napier and his staff for "molding me into the player and person I am today." Florida defensive tackle Gervon Dexter, guard O'Cyrus Torrence and receiver Justin Shorter also announced plans to enter the draft. They are among nearly two dozen players who have left the program in recent weeks.

Richardson is the headliner of the group. Many considered him a Heisman Trophy candidate following his stellar performance against then-No. 7 Utah in the team's season opener, a three-touchdown outing that started season-long speculation about Richardson's first year as Florida's starter being his last. But the third-year sophomore ended up being more inconsistent than proficient at the all-important position. He completed 53.8% of his passes for 2,549 yards, with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also ran for 654 yards and nine scores. He was sacked 14 times and fumbled twice. His completion percentage was the lowest for a starting quarterback at Florida since Treon Harris in 2015. Nonetheless, Richardson undoubtedly has NFL potential. The 6-foot-4, 232-pound Gainesville native is mobile and has a big-time arm. He has made plays all season - he has 16 runs that gained at least 10 yards and 46 passes that gained at least 20 yards - but he often struggled trying to complete routine throws. Staying healthy had been a concern, but Richardson started every game and took the majority of the snaps to prove his durability. Still, he's likely to land in the league with a team that has no plans to play him right away. Several scouts have said he would be best served starting his professional career as a backup and without the pressure of playing as a rookie. - AP College Football

Anthony Richardson threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 78 yards and two scores as Florida snapped its two-game losing streak with a 41-24 win over Texas A&M on Saturday. Richardson had touchdown runs of 10 and 60 yards in the first quarter and connected with Ja'Quavion Fraziars and Caleb Douglas on touchdown passes of 19 and 12 yards, respectively, in the third quarter as the Gators (5-4, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) opened up a 34-24 lead. Montrell Johnson Jr. rushed 22 times for 100 yards and a touchdown, Trevor Etienne rushed for 80 yards on 17 carries, and Ricky Pearsall had three catches for 65 yards as the Gators racked up 492 yards, including 291 rushing yards.

Devon Achane rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns and caught another score for the Aggies (3-6, 1-5), who went into halftime up 24-20. Achane had rushing touchdowns of 5 and 2 yards and caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Haynes King, who started in place of Conner Weigman. King, who was making his fifth start of the season, finished 23 of 45 for 279 yards and a touchdown. Evan Stewart had eight catches for 120 yards, and Moose Muhammad III caught seven passes for 99 yards. Texas A&M lost its fifth straight, the longest losing streak for the Aggies since 1980. - Florida/AP College Football

Anthony Richardson threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns, a top-level NFL prospect who looked comfortable playing on a Sunday, and Florida handled lower-division Eastern Washington 52-17 in a game delayed a day by Hurricane Ian. The Gators (3-2) scored touchdowns on their first five possessions while having their way with the Eagles (1-3). Richardson's first throw was a 75-yard TD pass to Justin Shorter. His first run went for 45 yards and set up another score. He briefly left the game in the first half to get his right ankle tapped but later returned and was done for the day early in the third quarter. He completed 8 of 10 passes, with an interception on a deep ball to open the second half.

Receiver Ricky Pearsall added a 76-yard TD run, and Jalen Kitna, the son of retired NFL quarterback Jon Kitna, notched his first career TD pass. The Gators amassed 529 yards on just 35 plays through three quarters. They emptied the bench after scoring 52 consecutive points to erase a 3-0 deficit. Eastern Washington will get $750,000 for the cross-country trip, a significant payday for a team from the Football Championship Subdivision whose annual athletics budget is about $17.5 million. The game between Florida and former Florida coach Jim McElwain's alma mater was initially set for 2020 but was bumped because of COVID-19 scheduling. It landed on the schedule for Saturday but got pushed a day as Ian tore through the Sunshine State. The game served as Florida's last tie to McElwain, who spent 15 years in Cheney, Washington, as a player and then an assistant coach. McElwain's brief tenure in Florida - he was fired late in his third season — ended up costing the Gators roughly $27.5 million. Gunner Talkington led the Eagles with 250 yards passing and a touchdown. - Florida/AP College Football

Off a stellar performance against Utah, Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson struggled with his accuracy last week and couldn't get going on the ground in his third career start at quarterback. He completed 14 of 35 passes for 143 yards with two costly interceptions that led to 13 points for Kentucky. A handful of receiver drops didn't help Richardson's cause. Star Kentucky linebacker Jordan Wright spied Richardson for most of the game. The result was an inability to get things going on the ground, as Richardson ran for just four yards on six carries after rushing for 106 yards and three touchdowns the previous week. The key will be how Richardson responds in Week 3 against USF. - Gainesville Sun

Standing in the tunnel and waiting to run into the raucous Swamp for the first time, Florida coach Billy Napier turned to an assistant and summed up the moment. "Can you believe they pay us to do this?" he said. It seemed like money well spent after the Gators delivered their biggest season-opening victory in more than 50 years. Anthony Richardson ran for three scores in his second career start, including a 2-yard scamper with 1:25 remaining, and Florida upset seventh-ranked Utah 29-26 on Saturday night to get the Napier era off to a rousing start.

Richardson was the best player on the field most of the night. He really showed up down the stretch, although fifth-year linebacker Amari Burney was the one who sealed the victory for the rebuilding Gators. Burney intercepted Cam Rising's second-down pass into the end zone with 17 seconds remaining. "Someone had to make a play, It happened to be me," Burney said. That set off a wild celebration for many of the 90,799 in attendance - the 10th most at home in school history. Richardson took a knee from there, and the Gators rushed the field to revel in their 33rd consecutive victory in home season openers. That's the longest current streak in the nation. "This group's got a lot of fight in them," said Napier, who replaced fired coach Dan Mullen in November. "They've got a little bit different edge to them." Richardson ran 11 times for 106 yards and was never stopped for a loss. He completed 17 of 24 passes for 168 yards and played turnover-free football. "He's going to get his (NFL payday)," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "He's 6-4, 230 and runs like a 4.3. He's a terrific player." - Florida/AP College Football

After last year's loss to Missouri, the Gators made a change. Former head coach and noted Tiger antagonist Dan Mullen was let go and Billy Napier was hired in his place. At his first media days in charge, Napier said he was excited to get started in Gainesville. "This group has embraced the work," Napier said. "I'm proud of our team. This team is not scared. They're tough, they love to compete. When you put the ball down, they're about it. I'm excited about training camp." Napier and the Gators will benefit from a solid quarterback in 2022, as Anthony Richardson is projected to be one of the top players in the nation at that position. The coach said he has been impressed by Richardson. "He has tremendous ability," Napier said. "He's working hard to develop, improve as a person, as a leader. He's working hard to increase his football IQ. His skill is developing. I think he's prime to have a phenomenal year." - Columbia Daily Tribune

In case you didn't keep tabs on Anthony Richardson's offseason, these were the pivotal moments for Florida's quarterback: He recovered from knee surgery, seized the starting job during spring practice, was cited for driving faster than 100 mph, uncorked a 73-yard throw at the Manning Passing Academy and, more recently, rebranded by un-branding. It's all part of a progression that first-year head coach Billy Napier contends is more important than arm strength or mechanics. "I think he's working hard on his leadership, his maturity, really growing up as a person, improving his character," Napier said Wednesday at SEC Media Days. "When you start talking about quarterback, we're not just talking about physical ability. We're talking about awareness. We're talking about the ability to influence the other people around you. To change the room when you walk in because of your credibility, your example."

A third-year sophomore with limited-but-dazzling experience, Richardson repeatedly has heard from Napier on the finer points of commanding a team. "I can't be careless anymore," he said. "Like people say, I'm the face of the program, so I need to act like it. I talk to Coach Napier almost every day, and he tells me I've got to move like a head coach. "There's a lot on my plate. There's a lot at stake for me and my family and the team, the university. So I have to move smart. I have to do the right thing every single day." - The Athletic

Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson says he will no longer use his nickname "AR-15" due to having similarities with the weapon often used in mass shootings. In a statement released Sunday, the Gainesville native said he doesn't want to be associated with the assault rifle used in shootings, which he doesn't condone in any way. Richardson, 21, who is expected to become the Gators starting QB for the upcoming season, recently launched a clothing line under the same moniker. He said he plans to rebrand that as well.

"After discussions with my family and much thought, I have decided to no longer use the nickname 'AR-15' and the current apparel line logo, which features a scope reticle, as part of my branding," Richardson said. "While a nickname is only a nickname and 'AR-15' was simply a representation of my initials combined with my jersey number, it is important to me that my name and brand are no longer associated with the assault rifle that has been used in mass shootings, which I do not condone in any way or form. My representatives and I are currently working on rebranding, which includes the creation of a new logo and transitioning to simply using 'AR' and my name, Anthony Richardson." - Gainesville Sun

A judge on Wednesday gave a homework assignment to Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson - an essay explaining his reason for speeding 105 mph and what he learned after spending 12 hours in traffic school. Alachua County Court Judge Meshon Rawls also fined Richardson $349 after his lawyer entered a plea of no contest to a charge of speeding at least 30 mph over the limit. The judge appeared dissatisfied with Richardson's explanation about why he was driving so fast, that he wasn't paying attention when a sheriff's deputy stopped him at 4:11 a.m. on April 4. "I just remember driving home that night," Richardson said during his court hearing. "I was putting in my maps, and I didn't realize I was going that fast because I looked up and seen blue lights, and that's pretty much all I remember." Richardson's lawyer, Joshua Houston, asked the judge not to assess points against the player's driver's license.

The judge balked after she learned that just weeks before Richardson was ticketed for 105 mph in Florida, he was also ticketed for driving 90 mph on an interstate in Georgia in a 70 mph zone. "I don't think there is a compelling circumstance or explanation for 105 mph," Rawls said. It wasn't clear why Richardson's lawyers didn't better prepare the player to explicitly apologize, express regret or offer a fuller, more credible explanation for driving so fast. Richardson spoke for about 13 seconds during the hearing, except to occasionally respond, "Yes, ma'am" to the judge. The judge said she would reconsider whether to assess points against Richardson's license if he submitted an essay, which Houston promised would happen within one week. - Gainesville Sun

Starting quarterback Emory Jones finally decided to transfer, which opened the door for Anthony Richardson - if he can stay healthy. Richardson looked like a future Heisman winner early in the season when he came off the bench to make one spectacular play after another, mostly as a runner. He might have beaten out Jones if he had stayed healthy. Injuries proved to be his greatest problem, which makes you wonder how well he could hold up as a fulltime starter. Another possibility: Ohio State transfer Jack Miller, who's known for accuracy and a quick release. He earned praise from coaches and players for how quickly he adjusted to the team and offense in the spring. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Anthony Richardson came off the bench and led Florida to a 24-21 victory over rival Florida State on Saturday that made the Gators bowl eligible a week after firing coach Dan Mullen. Richardson replaced turnover-prone Emory Jones early in third quarter and played significant snaps for the first time in a month. The dynamic freshman completed 5 of 7 passes for 55 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown to Justin Shorter that gave the Gators (6-6) some breathing room in a tight game. Dameon Pierce took over from there, going untouched for a 2-yard score after running around and through the Seminoles (5-7). His touchdown came four plays after Pierce was penalized 15 yards for continuing to participate without a helmet; it was ripped off during an 8-yard run. Pierce finished with 62 yards on the ground.

The Seminoles scored to make it close in the final minutes, but they botched an onside kick. Florida then ran out the clock for their third straight victory in the series. This one included a pregame skirmish, countless exchanges and numerous mistakes - six turnovers and 21 penalties for 196 yards. Those were hardly surprising considering it was two mediocre teams vying for bowl eligibility and bragging rights. Florida State, which entered the game as a 2½-point underdog despite winning its previous two games, will miss the postseason for the third time in four years. The Seminoles trailed 24-7 in the fourth before Treshaun Ward got loose for a 19-yard score. It was one of FSU's few highlights that didn't involve Jordan Travis. The quarterback battled through a right shoulder injury that twice forced him out of the game. He ran for a 9-yard touchdown in the second and scampered for 34 more in the fourth to set up Ward's score. He completed 18 of 29 passes for 202 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. He ran 17 times for 102 yards and was sacked four times. - Florida/AP College Football

Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson, recovering from a concussion, injured a knee dancing in the team hotel the night before losing at South Carolina. Coach Dan Mullen said Monday that Richardson was "gimping around" the football facility Monday. The Gators (4-5) host Samford (4-5) on Saturday. Richardson had been cleared to play against the Gamecocks, who rolled to a 40-17 victory in which the Gators allowed a season-high 459 yards and their most points in series history. But Richardson tweaked a knee busting a move and landed on the bench at South Carolina. "His MRI came back clean," Mullen said. "He's fine...He did treatment all day Saturday but was fine to go play, could have played Saturday but having not practiced, coming off a concussion, and with that he was going to emergency-only situation." Richardson was knocked out of a 34-7 loss to top-ranked Georgia in Jacksonville following a hit to the head/neck area. Emory Jones regained his starting job against the Gamecocks and completed 17 of 30 passes for 258 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. - AP College Football
