He recorded nine sacks and 14 1/2 tackles for loss in 13 games as a sophomore and this season he led the Big Ten in sacks (11) and tackles for loss (15 1/2) in just 11 g ames. Herbig was a consensus first-team, all-Big Ten pick, a Walter Camp All-American (second team) and on Friday was named UW's team MVP. - Jeff Potrykus, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Media members who cover Big Ten Conference football predict the University of Wisconsin will reach the conference title game this season, but fall to the unanimous favorite Ohio State. UW was picked to win the Big Ten West by 31 of the 36 voters in the C leveland.com preseason Big Ten poll, but all 36 voters see the Buckeyes winning the East and the league title game. A reporter from the State Journal participated in the poll. Ohio State is the first unanimous preseason favorite since 2015. UW hasn't won the Big Ten West since 2019 and hasn't won the Big Ten since 2012. Three respondents see Iowa winning the Big Ten West for a second consecutive year and two predict Minnesota will win the West. Badgers junior outside linebacker Nick Herbig earned second place in the preseason defensive player of the year poll with 55 points, including 10 first-place votes. Iowa senior linebacker Jack Campbell was first with 74 points and 20 first-place votes. Herbig had nine sacks last season, which leads all returning Big Ten players. - Wisconsin State Journal

Asked to evaluate his performance as a freshman in 2020, Nick Herbig responded with the same speed and ferocity he displays on the football field. "I was definitely not happy at all with the impact I made on the team last year," the talented outside line backer said. "I feel like I could have (done) so much more in many ways." Although Herbig's self-scout is surprisingly harsh considering he finished fourth on the team in tackles with 26, the determination to improve bodes well this season for UW, which opened camp Friday. "I need to be better and work harder," he said, "because obviously what I was doing last year wasn't enough. "I had that feeling at the end of the season like I didn't leave it all out there and I kind of let my team down." Herbig imp ressed his coaches and teammates in camp and started all seven games. He recorded 23 solo tackles, the No. 2 mark on the team behind inside linebackers Jack Sanborn and Leo Chenal. His total of six tackles for loss was tied for the team lead with Chenal. He had three tackles for loss and five total tackles in UW's 49-11 victory at Michigan and had seven solo tackles in the overtime victory over Minnesota. What bothered Herbig most was his inability to get to opposing quarterbacks. He had one sack, in the opener against Illinois, and UW finished with just 11. "I feel like last year the pass rush as a whole wasn't what Wisconsin is about," he said. "At Wisconsin, you're expected to have double-digit sacks. That is a big part of the game I need to f ocus on and really bring that edge to our team." - Journal Sentinel

According to his teammates, Herbig has quickly made up the lost ground. "I think the biggest thing with Nick is he's got such a high motor," Burks said. "He never stops, doesn't want to stay blocked. He is a pretty relentless finisher." Senior defensive end Isaiahh Loudermilk has noticed No. 19 making plays. "He has been absolutely tearing it up," Loudermilk said. "He is a special talent." Based on practice video UW officials have shared on Twitter, Herbig has been able to defeat the blocks of tackles a nd/or tight ends. "He's talented, but what sticks out is he loves playing the game of football," head coach Paul Chryst said. "Wants to be coached. Wants to become the best he can be. And then he goes 100 miles an hour and puts it out there. "It's like a ny of us. It's not perfect but he puts himself out there." - Journal Sentinel

When the Wisconsin coaches evaluated Nick Herbig during a lengthy recruiting process, they saw an outside linebacker who consistently displayed strength, toughness, speed and tenacity. They could envision Herbig setting the edge of the defense on running plays and making life uncomfortable for quarterbacks because of his ability to get into the backfield. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound freshman from Hawaii has not disappointed in his first camp and, based on comments from anyone willing to talk, should play a significant role this season. "Nick is a really mature football player that understands the game," Bobby April, entering his third season as UW's outside linebackers coach, said last week via Zoom. "He plays fast. He is physical. "All the stuff that you saw from his high school highlights and tapes have come to fruition for us. I love where he is trending. "He is a guy that's got everything we're looking for. He is smart, tough and dependable. He checks all three boxes and he is a great kid off the fiel d. "I can see why people are talking about him because the guy is a play-maker." - Journal Sentinel
