Clemson defensive tackle Bryan Bresee announced he will head to the pro ranks. Bresee, a junior, has been projected as a first-round pick in mock drafts despite 2021 and '22 seasons limited by injury, illness, and personal tragedy. "It has been a life-lo ng dream of mine to play in the NFL," Bresee wrote in an Instagram post on Jan. 2. "After much thought and many prayers, I would like to announce that I am declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft. Although I'm excited for this next chapter in my football journe y, I will always be a Clemson Tiger."Bresee was one of several juniors to declare for the draft on Jan. 2, including Alabama quarterback Bryce Young and edge-rusher Will Anderson Jr. Clemson linebacker Trenton Simpson and defensive end Myles Murph y, who were also five-star recruits in the 2020 class, announced prior to the Tigers' bowl game that they were heading pro. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Bresee was the No. 1 overall recruit in that class and was the ACC's defensive rookie of the year in 2020. He tore his ACL in the fourth game of Clemson's 2021 season. This campaign, Bresee was in and out of the lineup as he dealt with the death of his 15-year-old sister, a kidney issue, and then a case of strep throat. On the year, Bresee had 15 tackles, 5. 5 for loss, and 3.5 sacks in 10 games. - Charleston Post Courier

Bryan Bresee has a big decision to make. But he also has an Orange Bowl to play in. And despite being billed as a potential first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Clemson's star junior defensive tackle said he's locked in on the latter task. "I've been focused on Tennessee and that's all it's been so far," Bresee told reporters Wednesday in a pre-Orange Bowl media session. "When the season comes to a close, I'll weigh my options and talk to my family and my coaches and teammates and figure it out." Bre see, a former No. 1 overall recruit who's earned All-ACC honors every year of his Clemson career, is widely regarded as a top 15 NFL Draft talent.College football underclassmen such as Bresee have until Jan. 16 to notify the NFL they're entering t he draft pool, per NFL.com. Two of Bresee's Clemson teammates, junior defensive end Myles Murphy and junior linebacker Trenton Simpson, have already declared for the draft. Bresee said his decision won't come until after the Orange Bowl, which pits No. 6 Tennessee (10-2) against No. 7 Clemson (11-2) in a matchup of one-time College Football Playoff contenders. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. Friday from Hard Rock Stadium. - The State

Without naming names, Swinney said Clemson will return a number of players in 2023 who could've opted to pursue professional careers. "We've got some portal guys - they're guys that are already here and they decided to stay," Swinney said, laughing. "So they're in the 'I'm staying portal." Two draft-eligible juniors on Clemson's roster, defensive end Myles Murphy and linebacker Trenton Simpson, have announced they'll leave for the NFL. Neither will play in the Orange Bowl: Murphy is opting out, and Simp son has a short-term ankle injury. The most notable Clemson player yet to publicly make an NFL decision is junior defensive tackle Bryan Bresee. Other prominent veterans who could leave Clemson for a pro career but still have remaining eligibility includ e offensive tackle Jordan McFadden, tight end Davis Allen and wide receiver Joseph Ngata. There are even more such players on defense: defensive ends K.J. Henry, Xavier Thomas and Justin Mascoll; defensive tackles Bresee, Tyler Davis and Ruke Orhorhoro; linebacker Keith Maguire; and defensive backs Sheridan Jones and Jalyn Phillips. - The State

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said starting defensive tackle Bryan Bresee won't play at Boston College on Saturday night. Swinney said Tuesday that Bresee was continuing to recover from a kidney infection diagnosed last week and would be out for the fifth-r anked Tigers (5-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). Bresee underwent tests and medical monitoring and received positive news about his condition, Swinney said. The coach said the 6-foot-5, 305-pound junior will use this week to regain his football conditi oning. It's the second straight game and third this season that Bresee, the ACC's defensive rookie of the year in 2020, will miss. He was out against Louisiana Tech, with his family after the death of his 15-year-old sister. Bresee didn't play last week in a win over North Carolina State after his infection was diagnosed. - AP College Football

Team spokesman Ross Taylor said Bresee had a non-football condition this week that required blood work and medical observati on. Taylor said the Bresee family received good news from the tests late this week and Bryan's condition is not expected to impact him long term. Bresee and his family are still mourning the death of Bryan's 15-year-old sister, Ella, She died of brain ca ncer on Sept. 15 and her brother missed the win over Louisiana Tech on Sept. 17. Bresee returned to action last Saturday in a 51-45 OT win at No. 22 Wake Forest where tipped a pass from quarterback Sam Hartman on the Deacon's final unsuccessful drive in the second overtime. - AP College Football

Clemson allowed just six rushing yards to a Louisiana Tech, which racked up 300 on Stephen F. Austin a week earlier. And the Tigers didn't have defensive linemen Bryan Bresee, Tyler Davis, and Tre Williams. Bresee should be back for the Wake Forest game, and Swinney said Tyler Davis could have played against Louisiana Tech but they wanted to save him. Williams had a sore knee, which is concerning, given his injury history, but Swinney doesn't believe any of the Tigers' current injuries are long-term. Clemson defensive tackle Bryan Bresee never had to look far for a healthy dose of perspective as he tackled rehab from his season-ending injury. Sure, tearing the ACL in his left knee last September was a major setback and something that required months of off-field work to properly heal. But that was nothing compared with the battles of his younger sister, Ella, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer last year. "It just tells you to keep going," Bresee said Friday. "She's my little s ister, but she's also a little girl with so much on her plate right now. Whatever I'm going through isn't half as bad as what she's going through … she encourages me all the time."Bresee, who has an "Ella Strong" tattoo on his right arm, added t hat his younger sister is "doing well" ahead of another round of chemotherapy to treat her medulloblastoma in Washington, D.C., and will attend Clemson's Sept. 10 home opener against Furman. Through frequent in-person and phone conversations, Ella's been a "huge help" in the recovery of her older brother. Bresee tore his left ACL in the second half of Clemson's September 2021 loss at N.C. State but, 11 months later, is a full go for preseason camp. Coach Dabo Swinney described Bresee's rehab mentality a s "relentless." "That dude's going to be great whether you're there or not," Swinney said. "He's just driven that way. And then I think everything he's dealing with, with his family and his sister, that's certainly fueled his fire even more." - The State

It's remarkable to think Clemson's defensive line was a strength in 2021, because the Tigers were missing so much. Bryan Bresee, perhaps the unit's best player, was sidelined after Week 4 with an ACL tear. His sidekick on the interior, Tyler Davis, misse d games with a biceps tear. Another talented defensive tackle, Tre Williams, was afflicted by numerous ailments. Now, they are all back. Plus, NFL prospect Myles Murphy heads into his junior season at defensive end.Plus, K.J. Henry and Xavier Thom as have returned for fifth seasons and are reportedly in peak physical form. Plus, Ruke Orhorhoro and Etinosa Reuben are ascending after a season's worth of experience in Bresee's absence. Wes Goodwin couldn't have picked a better year to debut as defens ive coordinator, because the defensive line is incredibly stacked. And much like the "Power Rangers" group that bolstered championship defenses, this unit has adopted its own nickname, the "Avengers." As Captain America would say, it's time for Clemson's D-line to "assemble" and show what it can accomplish as a unit. Best of luck to the Tigers' offensive line as it battles Hulk (Bresee), Iron Man (Davis), Spider-Man (Murphy) and Thor (Thomas) in camp. - Charleston Post Courier

Clemson has lost starting defensive tackle Bryan Bresee for the rest of the season after the sophomore tore an ACL in the overtime loss at North Carolina State on Saturday. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney updated Bresee's status on Sunday. Bresee is a 6-foot- 5, 300-pound lineman from Damascus, Maryland. He was one fo the nation's top recruits when he signed at Clemson and was the Atlantic Coast Conference defensive rookie of the year. Swinney also said starting tailback Will Shipley will miss three-to-four w eeks with a leg injury. Shipley is a freshman who had risen to take over for NFL first-round and ACC career rushing leader Travis Etienne. Bresee's loss means the Tigers will play without their two starting defensive tackles for a while. Tyler Davis is o ut for as much as two months with a torn bicep. Bryan Bresee has heard the comparisons between Clemson's defensive line from 2018, nicknamed the Power Rangers, and this year's D-line. The Tigers' sophomore has respect for that past group, but he wants the current Clemson linemen to make their own name . They're well on their way to accomplishing the goal with all eyes on the position heading into the fall. "What they did for this program and the D-line, it was awesome and super cool watching them," Bresee said. "People on this team who got to play wit h them have kind of carried on the tradition with just being good leaders and things like that. Just kind of passed things down to all of us and we just try to keep it up."A big part of keeping up the tradition is learning, not necessarily copying , from the past. It's not always watching the big plays that serves as a teaching lesson, either. Sometimes seeing how mistakes played out can be just as important. "Film never dies and it never lies," Clemson defensive tackles coach Todd Bates said. "Yo u get to also see their lowlights and see that they struggled some like you did, but you see also that they just brought it every play. Through the good and bad, the highlights and the lowlights, that effort has to be always here. It has to be consistent , so that's really what we're trying to get instilled in our guys." Bresee was as steady as one could ask of a freshman in 2020. He recorded 33 tackles, 6.5 for loss, to go along with four quarterback sacks. - The State

After a top showing in Bryan Bresee's collegiate debut with Clemson in 2020, the defensive tackle will be expected to keep it going. Bresee finished third in the media's preseason player of the year voting with eight votes and was named to the All-Atlant ic Coast Conference team with 120 votes, released on Tuesday. The sophomore started 10 of 12 games played last season, contributing 33 tackles, 6.5 for loss, four quarterback sacks and two pass break-ups to help the Tigers reach the College Football Play offs semifinals with a 10-2 record."I think Bryan has the ability to develop into a great defensive lineman," Tigers defensive tackles coach Todd Bates said. "He's definitely on the right track." Fellow Tigers sophomore and quarterback D.J. Uiagal elei pocketed six votes for preseason player of the year to finish fourth in the voting with North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell nabbing the honor with 114 votes. Bryan Bresee and Myles Murphy were key parts of Clemson's highly touted 2020 recruiting class. They showed why Saturday. The two freshmen and future cornerstones of the Tigers' defense shined in their first college games as Clemson defeated Wake Forest 3 7-13. Bresee, a defensive tackle who was ranked as the nation's top recruit, showed both the nerves of a freshman and his playmaking ability in Clemson's first series. He jumped offsides on the third play but had a half-sack of Wake Forest quarterback Sa m Hartman two plays later. Bresee also blocked a kick and finished with two tackles, one for loss. "Like a big puppy dog, Labrador letting him outside for the first time and bring him home for the first time and he is wetting himself all over the place," Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. "Offside on the first series. Classic. But he has done well. Older guys, they are excited about him. Bryan did the same things tonight since he has gotten here last spring." - The State
