Brian Branch didn't join other Alabama football juniors at Monday's press conference, but he made the same decision as those at the presser. Branch is headed to the NFL Draft 2023. He announced the decision on Instagram later Monday. Branch joins quarter back Bryce Young, running back Jahmyr Gibbs and linebacker Will Anderson Jr. in declaring early for the NFL. "I've developed so much since my freshman year and because of Alabama, I'm confident that I'm prepared to take my game to the next level," Branch wrote on Instagram. "After thoughtful conversations with my family and coaches, I've decided to forgo my senior year and enter the 2023 NFL Draft. This has been a dream of mine since I could remember and I'm ready to embrace this next journey for my lif e."Branch has been the primary starter at the Star defensive back position on Nick Saban's defense the past two seasons. He is fresh off arguably his best game for the Crimson Tide after he finished with 12 tackles, one sack and an interception ag ainst Kansas State. This season, he finished with 90 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions and seven passes defensed. - Montgomery Advertiser

There's a lot of competition in the secondary and a few rookies are competing for prime roles. Brian Branch is one with a shot at the fifth DB position known as the Star. "Brian Branch is definitely a baller," receiver Jaylen Waddle said Tuesday. "I real ly like the way he competes. He is real physical and he is going to be a future star, definitely a household name." Malachi Moore of Hewitt-Trussville is also in that mix. Junior cornerback Patrick Surtain spoke about Branch and Moore on Tuesday. "I see them improving in knowing the plays, knowing the adjustments, knowing concepts as well," said Surtain, the one full-time starter back in the secondary. "They have the talent to cover, and stuff, but I know developing, the playbook and understanding the g ame consistently, that's what they've improved upon."Saban also spoke about Moore and Branch after a Sept. 8 practice. "Both guys have played multiple positions, Star, Money," he said. "I just think both guys have a chance to make a contribution. We lost four out of five starters in the secondary last year, so we don't have a lot of experience. And that's one of the positions that we're trying to create more depth at. Those guys seem to be the kind of guys that have enough maturity as freshmen to stay focused on the things that they need to do so they have a chance to go out there and play. We've had a few guys be able to do that around here as freshmen, and we're probably going to have somebody need to do that in the secondary." - Birmingham Ne ws

Alabama did not have its full team at the ready for its first preseason scrimmage on Saturday. Freshman quarterback Bryce Young was among those inactive and some that did practice were able to make a name for themselves. After a scrimmage that featured s ome game simulation and some situational play, coach Nick Saban named four freshmen in praising their performances through the first two weeks of preseason camp. Two of them could be one of the four new starters in the secondary: Brian Branch and Malachi Moore are both in the mix for early playing time."Both have been playing (the) star (position), and they both have shown the potential to be able to play the position and play winning football at the position. It's certainly a position of need fo r us," Saban said. "Patrick Surtain II could obviously play star but he's so valuable at corner you hate to move him in there, but Marcus Banks and Josh Jobe have both made significant progress at corner." Saban identified Drew Sanders and Will Anderson as two freshmen outside linebackers who impressed him. Saban said previously that one or two freshmen would likely contribute to the rotation at that position. - Montgomery Advertiser
