Jarrett Horst, Michigan State, Player News

2021 ALL-BIG TEN HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Jarrett Horst,...Started first eight games at left tackle...transfer from Arkansas State was named to the Outland Trophy Watch List...missed the final four games of the regular season...has played 317 offensive snaps this season. - Michigan State Football

There is a reasonable argument to be made that the single most important Michigan State football player of the last decade is Jack Conklin. The Spartans went 36-5 in the three seasons he was their left tackle, sealing the edge, protecting Connor Cook's blind side. They're 29-29 since. They haven't had a consistent push up front or adequately protected the quarterback on a regular basis post-Conklin. The numbers beyond their record are just as telling and, recently, grim. And, thus, there again is a reasonable argument that an offensive lineman is the most important player on this MSU football team - at least the most important newcomer. That player is Arkansas State transfer Jarrett Horst, a senior from suburban Madison, Wisconsin, who was an All-Sun Belt Conference left tackle last season.

"He's got an intensity to him. He's got this will to finish that not a lot of people have," MSU offensive line coach and run-game coordinator Chris Kapilovic said this past week. "...He brings something to the table that we were really counting on." Like a true, bona fide tackle, with a mean streak. Rather than an offensive guard playing out of position, like has so often occurred on at least one side of the line over the last few seasons. Horst and returning tackle A.J. Arcuri give the Spartans two true tackles with loads of experience. - Lansing State Journal

Michigan State coach Mel Tucker continued to work the transfer portal on Saturday, securing the commitment of offensive lineman Jarrett Horst of Arkansas State. At 6-foot-6 and 304 pounds, Horst was third-team All-Sun Belt Conference in 2019 and entered 2020 on the Outland Trophy watch list while earning all-conference honors from Phil Steele and second team from Athlon Sports. Horst, a native of Middleton, Wis., made his commitment in a Twitter post on Saturday night, becoming the third player this week to announce he is transferring to Michigan State. He joins graduate transfer quarterback Anthony Russo of Temple and third-year sophomore running back Harold Joiner III from Auburn. High-profile programs like Texas, Oklahoma and Baylor had shown interest in Horst since he entered the transfer portal earlier this week. - Detroit News

2020 OUTLAND TROPHY PRESEASON WATCH LIST: OT Jarrett Horst, Arkansas State,...Horst is now the second A-State player tabbed to the Outland Trophy Watch List over the last three seasons, while also becoming the fifth all-time to earn a spot on the prestigious list. He joins former standouts Lanard Bonner (2018), Ryan Carrethers (2013), Matt Mandich (2008) and Garry Johnson (2002). Starting every game at left tackle last season as a sophomore, Horst was named Third Team All-Sun Belt Conference and received the Gary Withrow Award, presented annually to the A-State football team's outstanding offensive lineman of the year. Horst helped lead the way for over 300 yards total offense by A-State in all but one game and over 400 yards in 10 outings during 2019, including a season-high 558 yards against Troy. - Arkansas State Football
