Tiawan Mullen, Indiana, Player News
|
Tiawan Mullen announced Wednesday afternoon his intent to forgo one last year of eligibility and enter the NFL draft. Mullen's legacy needs little in the way of introduction. Only the second IU cornerback ever named an All-American, and the first to make first team, Mullen should be remembered among the best players at his position in Indiana football history. More than that, he will probably (and rightly) be remembered among the players who best embodied a period of tremendous success and serious footb all in Bloomington. He was an All-American Bowl participant, like his older brother, Trayvon, who went to Clemson, but Tiawan spoke of blazing his own trail and did. He was the first out-of-state All-American Bowl selection to sign with IU at a pos ition other than kicker, and he made good not just on the talent those credentials promised but also the symbolism of his decision. He was a standard bearer for IU football and IU athletics, a vocal supporter and in-person regular at other Indiana sporti ng events who was as beloved across the department as any athlete in recent memory. - Indianapolis Star/News

2022 PRESEASON CHUCK BEDNARIK AWARD WATCH LIST: Tiawan Mullen, Indiana, Senior CB,...The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native earned All-America accolades in each of his first two seasons on campus and is a two-time All-Big Ten performer. In 2021, Mullen was the first cornerback in program history to earn first-team All-America honors (FWAA, Phil Steele) and just the second cornerback (Tim Wilbur, 1980; second team) in school history to achieve All-America status. His first-team selection made him the first Hoosier since offensive lineman Dan Feeney (2015, 2016) to claim first-team recognition. Mullen was also the program's first cornerback to card first-team All-Big Ten honors since Tracy Porter (2007) after he made 38 tackles, 27 solo, with 3.5 sacks, 4. 5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, one forced fumble, four pass breakups, and one quarterback hurry in eight games. He led all Big Ten defensive backs in sacks (T-12th overall) and TFLs, and shared No. 6 overall in interceptions. - Indiana Football

The first thing noticeably different about All-Big Ten Indiana junior cornerback Tiawan Mullen this season is his upper body. Mullen only put on four pounds from last season, but it shows up most in his shoulders and arms. Now at 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, M ullen credited IU strength coach Aaron Wellman and team nutritionist Isaac Hicks for the strength gains. "We took a lot of time figuring out what I need, the body mass. They had guys coming in to measure up everything," Mullen said, "I ate four to five t imes a day, hydrated, slept well, great nutrition." Mullen's favorite meal? "Chicken alfredo pasta," he said. Mullen said the weight gain was by design, to withstand the rigors of the Big Ten.The Hoosiers played eight games in the pandemic-shorten ed 2020 season but could play up to 13 or 14 games this season, depending on their level of success. "Just playing in the Big Ten you need a strong body, a fit body, to be able to last," Mullen said. "So I think it's going to help me a lot, put on more e xtra weight, great healthy weight. I can still move efficient, so it's not bad for me." Mullen displayed his versatility in his breakout sophomore season, posting 3.5 sacks, three interceptions and one forced fumble in 2020. New IU defensive coordinator Charlton Warren intends to use Mullen all over the field in the secondary again, a role he welcomes. - Herald Bulletin

Preseason All-Big Ten Indiana sophomore cornerback Tiawan Mullen isn't the first player that comes to mind as a pass rush threat. Yet Mullen showed a knack for getting the quarterback on the ground last Saturday against Rutgers, posting 2.5 sacks on well -disguised blitzes from the secondary. Mullen said improving on blitzes was one of his priorities during the offseason. Last season, in addition to a Big Ten-high 13 passes defended, Mullen had 3.5 tackles for loss but no sacks. "I'm a much better blitze r than last year," Mullen said. "That's something I wanted to work on, and I showed it versus Rutgers, and I just felt like when it's time, when my name is called to go get the quarterback, I'm going to get the job done." Mullen's 2.5 sacks lead the Hoos iers through two games. "He is a guy that is crafty and explosive," Indiana defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said. "He blitzes about two inches off the ground, so he is hard to pick up. That can always be a difficult thing as well when you play low and fast. You find creative ways to get in the backfield." - Herald Bulletin

When it comes to position groups on the Indiana football roster, head coach Tom Allen is confident in his cornerbacks and their ability in man coverage. IU's pass defense allowed a respectable 213.7 yards per game in 2019, but there is still room for mor e big plays. IU only recorded seven interceptions, with the corners accounting for just two picks. On the flip side, led by honorable mention All Big-Ten freshman Tiawan Mullen, IU's corners accounted for 20 of the team's 42 pass breakups. At 5-foo t-10 and 177 pounds, Mullen makes up for his lack of size with his speed and ball skills. Mullen led the Big Ten and finished second among freshman nationally in pass breakups in Football Bowl Subdivision play with 13. On top of that, Mullen showed a nos e for the football with two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. "There's always room to improve," Mullen said. "I'm never satisfied with how I played. Freshman year I feel could have been better. I feel like I can do more for the team." - Herald Bu lletin

The loss to Tennessee in the Gator Bowl still resonates with Indiana rising sophomore cornerback Tiawan Mullen. In a breakout freshman season, Mullen became a starter by early October and led the Big Ten with 13 pass breakups, earning honorable mention a ll-conference honors. The season closed with Mullen returning to his home state of Florida, but the 5-foot-10, 176-pound Fort Lauderdale native said the 23-22 loss to the Vols on Jan. 2 has driven him through offseason workouts. "Losing by one point, it kind of like boils my stomach, tears my stomach, but not the wrong way," Mullen said. "We lost by one point. What can we do differently? How can we approach the 2020 season? There's always a chip on my shoulder. That's how I want to approach my sophomore season."Mullen has set high goals for himself since first stepping on campus, including winning the Thorpe Award, given to the top defensive back in college football. In addition to the 13 pass breakups, Mullen tied for the IU lead last season wi th two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. That season has put Mullen on the radar nationally, as Athlon Sports recently named him as one of the top 35 breakout candidates in college football in 2020. "I just want to improve on that, become a more vocal leader out there on the field," Mullen said. "Just being comfortable for when they need me to make big-time plays." Mullen is back in Fort Lauderdale as IU players are scattered throughout the country due to the coronavirus pandemic. But he's found parks to work out at and weights to lift. He's also got a pair of familiar workout partners in his older brother, Trayvon Mullen, who just finished his rookie NFL season with the Oakland Raiders, and his younger brother, Trevell Mullen, a four-star Clas s of 2022 recruit who already has offers from IU, Kentucky and Oregon. - Herald Bulletin
