Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. declared for the 2023 NFL Draft and announced he won't play in the Nittany Lions' bowl game, the redshirt junior wrote on social media Wednesday. "First and foremost, I sincerely appreciate my teammates, coaches, fam ily and every member of the Penn State community who have made the last four years so memorable," Porter wrote in a message posted to social media. "My time at Penn State has been nothing short of a blessing." Porter recorded 11 pass breakups and allowed just nine catches among 26 targets in man-to-man coverage this season, was named first-team All-Big Ten by separate voting from conference coaches and reporters.A redshirt junior from North Allegheny, Porter made history during Penn State's 35-31 victory at Purdue in the opening week of the season when he broke up six passes to set a school record and tie a Big Ten mark that had been unmatched since 2015. The six breakups are tied for the most in a single game for an FBS player since Houston's W illiam Jackson III had seven against Temple in 2015. Penn State hasn't had many cornerbacks like Joey Porter Jr. Few possess his raw talent. Even fewer are built like him. Porter is already a 2023 first-round projection in several mock drafts. The North Allegheny grad, the son of Pittsburgh Steelers great Joey Porter, was a third-team All-Big Ten pick by the conference's coaches last season. But there were a couple of issues with penalties in 2021, and Porter's overall play sometimes gets overlooked as a result. Still, Penn State veteran cornerbacks coach Terry Smith knows what he has in the 198-pound Porter, who is entering his fourth season with the Nittany Lions.From a physical standpoint, Smith said there is only one former Lion - a good one - who is comparable to Porters: Amani Oruwariye, one of the top young corners in the NFL. He was a first-team All-Big Ten choice in 2018. "Amani's having such a great career with the Detroit Lions," Smith said. "Amani's built similar to (Porter). Amani probably has a lot of what Joey has, (but) Joey has m ore speed. Amani wasn't as fast, but those two guys are probably the most comparable in my mind, of guys I've coached because of their length. "Joey's kind of exceptional with his speed, athleticism, that combination he has. He's 6-3. His arms are 35 inc hes. That's the longest on the team - D-ends, O-linemen, everyone. And so you put that out on the perimeter, it's tough on receivers to get separation. We're excited about him." - Tribune Review

Penn State has one of the highest-upside cornerbacks in the country returning for the 2022 season, leading the way for a room with plenty of potential. The Nittany Lions lost Tariq Castro-Fields to the 2022 NFL Draft but still return major contributors a t the team's three starting spots. Those starters - to go with veteran depth - should lead to good coverage on the outside this year. Let's take a look at how Penn State's cornerback depth chart could shake out to start the season. Projected starters: Re dshirt juniors Joey Porter Jr. and Daequan Hardy, sophomore Kalen King. The team's starters are where most of the upside lies, with the chance to have two No. 1-type cornerbacks on the outside and a high level veteran in the slot when the team moves to n ickel packages. The Nittany Lions have good size on the outside and the perfect skillset in the slot.Porter has excellent size at 6-foot-2, 198 pounds and uses it all when he's in man coverage. He's an excellent athlete who can turn and run with f aster receivers, but has shown enough refinement to stick with technicians who use their route running to create space in the middle of the field. The redshirt junior can essentially match up with any receiver in the country and give them a difficult tim e, but he isn't without flaws. He's a physical cornerback, which helps against stronger opponents, but it doesn't always work in his favor. Porter can get too aggressive with his hands in coverage, getting too many pass interference and holding calls aga inst him. That will be the primary point of improvement for him this season as he looks to take the next step in his progression. - Centre Times

Defensive back Joey Porter, who signed with Penn State in 2019 as the No. 324 prospect nationally and No. 33 cornerback in the 247Sports Composite, is already moving up boards as a potential first-round pick. The 6-foot-2 cornerback has great length for the position and the size to compete with outside receivers in the NFL. Penn State now has an exclusive deal with a company for both physical and digital trading cards. Fanatics Collectibles and Topps, which was recently acquired by Fanatics, announced deals with several universities that include both exclusive and non-exclu sive co-branded trading card products, incorporating official university trademarks and featuring current student-athletes and former athletes playing in the NFL, NBA and MLB, according to a release.Penn State is one of those universities, alongsi de Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Oregon, Texas A&M and others. The deal will take effect between 2023 and 2025. Later this year, Topps will also begin a scaled, non-exclusive program to design, manufacture and distribute trading cards showcasing cu rrent college football and basketball student-athletes for those schools and over 100 others. The Big Ten announced three kickoff times for Penn State football Thursday afternoon after the Nittany Lions announced one Wednesday morning. The Nittany Lions will play the Purdue Boilermakers on the road Sept. 1 - a Thursday - at 8 p.m. in their season opener, which will air on Fox. They'll then take on the Ohio Bobcats at noon Sept. 10, which will air on ABC. Their homecoming game - an Oct. 22 matchup with the Minnesota Golden Gophers - will kick off at 7:30 p.m and air on a to be determined network. The three announcements come just over 24 hours after it was announced they'll play the Auburn Tigers at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. That game will air on CBS, the first time Penn State has played on the network in 22 years. Early 2023 first round mock drafts have begun to roll in and this is the name that constantly comes up. Penn State's Porter is the ideal size for an NFL cornerback and has the athleticism to hang with the best receivers in football. His next major test w ill be proving he can cover consistently without committing penalties. Doing that should put him firmly in the first round of next year's draft. - Tribune Review

While Castro-Fields brings leadership and experience, it's Porter who has some of the most upside on the roster. He's played in 12 games of a possible 22 since he enrolled prior to the 2019 season, starting in eight of them, all of which came in the 2020 season. He has the pedigree to be an NFL-caliber talent with his dad - Joey Sr. - playing linebacker in the NFL for 13 seasons. The younger Porter has the build to eventually grow into a safety, but his athletic prowess and ability on the outside should keep him at corner for the foreseeable future.He's a big, athletic corner at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds and he uses every bit of his size to his advantage. He muscles up against big wide receivers, knocking them off their route and beating them in 1-on -1 jump ball situations. He uses his hands well at the line of scrimmage and doesn't get beat often when he's in press coverage. Once receivers are into their routes, Porter sticks to them and doesn't allow for much separation. Had Castro-Fields left for the 2021 NFL Draft, it's safe to say Penn State would've been fine at corner. After appearing in only four games last season, Porter Jr. appears to be in the mix to be one of Penn State's top reserves at cornerback. Tariq Castro-Fields and Keaton Ellis are projected as the starters, and Porter is competing with Marquis Wilson for playing time. The son of Joey Porter, the former Steelers linebacker and coach, Porter Jr. credited a variety of individuals in helping him progress into his second season. "A lot of people helped me," Porter Jr. said. "My father helped me to understand the playbook. The corner room helped me a lot. Castro-Fields, the leader of the corner room, he showed me the ins and outs. (Assistant head coach Terry Smith), (graduate assistant V'Angelo Bentley), they all played a big part helping me understand and kn ow the defense so when I'm out there, I know what I'm doing."Of course, Porter Jr. has a considerable resource in his father, a Pro Bowler with the Steelers in the 2000s who helped them win Super Bowl XL.
