2022 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY (COMMUNITY SERVICE) WATCHLIST: Bijan Nichols, Navy, Sr., K,...Nichols was voted tri-captain by his teammates, which is the greatest honor a Navy student-athlete can receive. He is believed to be only the second kicker in sc hool history to be a team captain and the first placekicker. Punter Bob Bowstrom was a team captain in 1930. Nichols has made 3 game-winning field goals during his career - 48 yards vs. Tulane in 2019, 23 yards vs. Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl in 201 9 and 33 yards at Tulane in 2020.He also scored the deciding points in the Mids' 2020 win over Temple with a career-long 50-yarder. Nichols is tied for third on Navy's all-time career extra points made list (105), second on the career field goals leader board (33) and second on the career list for most points scored by a kicker (204). Last year, Nichols garnered Second-Team All-AAC recognition, as well as All-East honors. He finished the season as the team's leading scorer with 73 points on 15 fi eld goals (15 of 19) and 28 PATs (28 of 28). - Navy Football

2021 ALL-AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM (COACHES): K Bijan Nichols, Navy, Jr.,...Nichols has made 14 of his 17 field goal attempts and all 26 of his PATs this fall. Of his three missed field goals, two were blocked and the third was a miss fro m 55 yards at Memphis. Nichols has made 103-career extra points, which is the fourth most in school history, while his 32-career field goals rank second in school annals. Tai Lavatai scored a game-winning touchdown from the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter and Navy defeated Tulsa 20-17 on Friday night. Lavatai was 0-for-3 passing but gained a career-high 64 yards on the ground, giving him 242 rushing yards and five touch downs in six starts. The Midshipmen gained 302 yards rushing, zero passing. The 15-play eight-minute drive in Navy's (2-6, 2-4 American Athletic Conference) come-from-behind win foiled a big night by Tulsa's Anthony Watkins, who scored the Golden Hurrica nes first kickoff return for a touchdown in nearly a decade and compiled 178 yards in total offense. The win was Navy's first on the road this season and broke a three-game losing streak.Watkins scored a 97-yard kickoff return to open the second h alf as Tulsa (3-5, 2-2) took a 10-3 lead. The last Golden Hurricane with a kickoff return for a TD was Trey Watts, 95-yards against Marshall on Oct. 6, 2012. Late in the first half, Zack Long kicked a 26-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead as Tulsa salvaged p oints from a five-play drive that began with a Watkins season-long 78-yard rush to the Navy 7-yard line. Watkins spun away from a tackler at the line of scrimmage and bolted straight downfield before he was caught. Watkins had 81 yards rushing on five ca rries. Tai Lavatai returned from a two-game injury absence to lead Navy back from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit and a 34-30 win over UCF on Saturday for the Midshipmen's first victory this season. With Navy trailing 30-27, Diego Fabot knocked the ball out o f Brandon Johnson's hands after a 20-yard reception and Taylor Robinson recovered at the Navy 47. Eleven plays and over five minutes later, Isaac Ruoss ran in from the 4-yard line to give the Midshipmen the lead with 3:09 left. UCF quickly went down the field down to the Navy 12, but Robinson, who dropped a would-be interception two plays earlier, came up with a pick in the end zone on fourth down with 24 seconds remaining.The victory was the first for Navy (1-3, 1-1) in three meetings with the K nights (2-2, 0-1) since joining the American Athletic Conference in 2015, the final league team the Midshipmen were winless against. Bijan Nichols kicked his second field goal and Lavatai, who missed the previous two games, ran for his second touchdown o f the game after Navy entered the fourth quarter trailing 30-17. Lavatai and Ruoss had 21 carries each as Navy ran for 348 yards led by 85 from Carlinos Acie. Daniel Taylor recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a Navy TD in the first half.
