Barely 12 hours after setting a school record for receiving yards in a season, Nebraska wideout Trey Palmer is turning his attention to the next level. Palmer declared for the NFL draft on Saturday morning, marking an end to 11 months as a Husker that wa s both brief and memorable. The former five-star recruit followed coach Mickey Joseph from LSU to Lincoln and broke out in his fourth college season, It culminated Friday evening in Iowa City as the Kentwood, La., native made nine catches for 165 yards t hat included two touchdowns in Nebraska's 24-17 win over Iowa. His blazing speed was on display throughout, including as he separated from defenders with an 87-yard scoring bomb. "They can't guard me - that's all I seen," Palmer said. "They can't g uard me or they can't run with me. That's what I did." Palmer finished the season with 1,043 receiving yards, breaking the school mark set by Stanley Morgan Jr. (1,004) in 2018. He's the second Husker to hit the 1,000-yard receiving plateau in one campai gn. He also set the NU single-game receiving record when he amassed 237 yards against Purdue last month. Asked Friday evening about his future plans, Palmer said he wasn't sure and was "just going day by day." That changed Saturday morning as he announce d his intentions minutes after Nebraska officially unveiled Matt Rhule as its new permanent head coach. - Lincoln Journal Star

Nebraska associate head coach and receivers coach Mickey Joseph saw Trey Palmer up close when the two were together at LSU, and he's seen Palmer up close now that the two are together at Nebraska. And what Joseph has seen from the former five-star recrui t in Lincoln could give Husker fans hope that the 6-foot-1, 190-pounder might be the man to lead NU's wide receiver room into the future. "He's a totally different kid than I had at LSU," Joseph said Wednesday on the Huskers Radio Network. "I think he's playing with more confidence. I think he understands the grind that I expect out of the group. "I think he understands that every day he's got to come and fight."If all that is true, Palmer can trace it to his time in Baton Rouge where, despite be ing a top-20 prospect nationally out of high school, he found himself on the depth chart behind the likes of Ja'Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, Terrace Marshall and Racey McMath, all of whom were NFL Draft picks in either 2020 and 2021. People say, 'Well, Mickey, why didn't he play?" Joseph explained. "I'm like, 'Well, you know what, he played behind two first-rounders." But Palmer's time has come, Joseph said, in part because he's gotten settled in Lincoln. "He's happy. And that's the difference I see wi th him is that he's a happy camper right now," Joseph said. "Even my wife said, 'He's a different kid.' And we're happy to have him." - Lincoln Journal Star

What we learned this spring: We learned Trey Palmer, a transfer from LSU, is prominent in Nebraska's plans. Don't be surprised if he ends up as the team's leading receiver in 2022. "Trey's fit great," Nebraska coach Scott Frost said. "He fits in great be cause of his personality. He brings energy every single day, he's made a lot of plays out there, he can really run. I think with some more time working with him, we have a chance to do some special things and I'm looking forward to seeing that develop." The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Palmer caught 30 passes last year for the Tigers, and his calling card is indeed his speed. He likes the deep ball. All told, new Nebraska receivers coach Mickey Joseph had 20 receivers in spring camp. He wants to narrow the rotation to nine or so. During the course of spring, it seemed five or six receivers emerged as safe bets to be in the main rotation. The starters for the Red-White Spring Game were Palmer, Oliver Martin and Alante Brown. Omar Manning, a key cog last se ason, will almost certainly be counted on again. - Lincoln Journal Star
