Cross Robinson scored on a short run in the third quarter and Drake ran out the final four minutes to secure a 6-3 victory over Butler on Saturday in the battle of the Bulldogs. Drake missed a 49-yard field goal with 5:53 remaining in the fourth, but for ced a three-and-out to get the ball back. Drake ran out the clock by picking up first downs on Blake Ellingson's 6-yard run and his 12-yard connection with Ryan Hayes.Ellingson was 13 of 23 for 181 yards for Drake (2-3, 1-1 Pioneer), which snapped a three-game losing streak. Robinson carried it 19 times for 63 yards, and Colin Howard caught four passes for 92 yards. Robinson capped a 90-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to give Drake a three-point lead before the PAT was missed with 4:53 lef t in the third. Bret Bushka completed 12 of 20 passes for 109 yards, and he carried it 14 times for 78 yards for Butler (2-3, 0-1). Yogi Flager caught six passes for 82 yards. The Butler defense has not allowed a 100-yard receiver since 2019, spanning 11 games. - AP College Football

Ian Corwin ran for two scores and passed for a third in the first half as Drake opened its season with a 45-3 win over Division II West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday night. Corwin, who missed one game and struggled with injuries throughout the abbreviate d spring season, engineered scoring drives on the Bulldogs' first three possessions. Caden Meis punched in from the 1 to cap a seven-play, 48-yard drive.Cross Robinson cashed in a six-play, 49-yard drive, scoring from 3 yards out, and Corwin ran t he final yard after an eight-play, 45-yard drive to make it 21-0 after one quarter. Corwin scampered 28 yards for his second rushing touchdown in the second quarter then fired a 79-yard scoring pass to Colin Howard that made it a 35-0 lead at halftime. T railing 45-0, West Virginia Wesleyan mounted a 13-play, third-quarter drive that stalled at the Drake 4 and resulted in a 21-yard field goal by Liam Depp to avoid the shutout. Freshman quarterback Ian Corwin threw two touchdown passes and wide receiver Alex Bray tossed one of his own as Drake held off Davidson 31-28 on Saturday. Drew Lauer rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs (6-5, 6-2 Pioneer Football League) . He also had a receiving TD and finished with three catches for 63 yards. The Wildcats (8-4, 5-3) grabbed a 7-0 lead on Wesley Dugger's 1-yard plunge with 4 minutes left in the first quarter. But Drake answered with a 7-play, 68-yard drive that ended wi th Lauer's 5-yard TD run to knot the score at 7. Davidson regained the lead on Kahleel Shaw's 31-yard TD run with 11:28 left in the second quarter, but Bray hit Erin Morgan for a 13-yard score on a trick play to pull the Bulldogs even at 14. Drake took a 21-14 lead into halftime when Corwin hit Devin Cates for a 4-yard score with 18 seconds left.Nathan De Bruin's 21-yard field goal stretched Drake's lead to 10 early in the third quarter, but the Wildcats cut their deficit to three after Eli Turne r Jr. scored on a 3-yard run. Corwin gave Drake some breathing room with a 4-yard TD toss to Lauer just 44 seconds into the final quarter. Dugger's 2-yard TD run pulled Davidson within 31-28 with 8:25 left to play. The Wildcats turned the ball over on do wns on their final two possessions. Tyler Phelps was 0-for-6 passing for Davidson and Turner connected on his only pass as the Wildcats were held to 14 yards through the air. Dugger finished with 109 yards and two scores on 27 carries. The Rice Award is named fo r the legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver and has been presented since 2011 to the Division I subdivision's freshman player of the year. Corwin, a native of Tulsa, Okla., has completed 129 of 228 passes (56.6 percent) for 1,480 yards and 14 touchdowns i n his first season donning the blue and white. He was named the STATS FCS National Freshman Player of the Week on Sept. 30 after leading Drake to a 41-17 road win over Marist. Ian Corwin threw three touchdown passes, Drew Lauer scored three touchdowns and Drake defeated Butler 42-7 on Saturday to remain undefeated in the Pioneer League. Corwin, the current Stats FCS National Freshman Player of the Week, completed 25 of 32 pass es for 265 yards. Two of his TD throws went to Devin Cates, who totaled nine receptions for 103 yards. Drake (3-3, 3-0 PFL), second in the Pioneer League in total defense, held Butler (1-5, 0-2) to 229 total yards.Butler got started on the wrong f oot, losing a fumble on the opening kickoff. Lauer capped a short drive with a 1-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 Drake lead. Butler tied it with its only score, a 34-yard pass from Joey Lindstrom to Johnny O'Shea. Lauer scored his other TDs on a 22-yard pas s from Corwin and a 2-yard run, giving Drake a 21-7 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Cates caught two short TD passes from Corwin and Jacob Clay added a 1-yard run to cap the scoring. Lauer had 26 carries for 124 yards. - AP College Football

Ian Corwin threw two touchdowns passes and Drake held Valparaiso to just 131 yards of offense in a 35-6 victory on Saturday. After a scoreless first quarter, Corwin directed a 15-play, 64-yard drive that took 6:20 off the clock with Drew Lauer running it in from the 2-yard line for a 7-0 lead at the 13:34 mark of the second period. On the next possession for Drake (2-3, 2-0 Pioneer Football League), Corwin connected with Caden Meis for an 11-yard TD and a 14-0 lead. Meis, a freshman, finished with a car eer-best 12 rushes for 90 yards and a score. His TD catch was his first career reception.Dimitrios Latsonas got the Crusaders (0-5, 0-1) on the scoreboard with a 46-yard field goal to cut their deficit to 14-3. Lauer followed with his second TD ru n, a 15-yarder that capped a six-play, 47-yard drive for a 21-3 Bulldogs' lead. Latsonas kicked a 41-yard field goal on the final play of the quarter to leave Valparaiso trailing 21-6 at halftime. Drake put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Mei s raced for a 53-yard TD on the Bulldogs' second play of the quarter and Corwin capped the scoring with a 4-yard TD toss to Devin Cates at the 8:10 mark. Ian Corwin threw a career-high four touchdown passes and Drake won for the first time this season beating Marist 41-17 on Saturday. Corwin led Drake (1-3, 1-0 Pioneer League) on a six-play, 59-yard scoring drive on the Bulldogs' first possession. A 22-ya rd touchdown pass to Devin Cates gave Drake a lead that was never challenged. Corwin threw a 32-yard TD pass to Shane Feller for a 13-0 lead after one quarter. Drew Lauer ran it in from four-yards out to extend the lead to 20-3. Then Jeran Proctor interc epted Austin Day and returned it 54 yards to the Marist 21-yard line 19 seconds before halftime. Corwin quickly cashed in with a 17-yard pass to Cates and a four-yard scoring toss to Matt Hartlieb. Corwin finished 20-of-29 passing for 255 yards. Feller f inished with six receptions and 102 yards and Lauer had 15 carries for 75 yards.
