TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 13. Jordan Battle, Sr, SS, Alabama, 6-0, 206, 1,...In a 20-19 win over Texas, Battle had three tackles, an assist and helped keep running back Bijan Robinson from getting loose. But Battle was conflicted against ear ly play-action which sometimes helped the Texas passing game. Previous week, No. 15: Despite being a strong safety, Battle looked as good or better in coverage as he did tackling in Bama's 55-0 dismantling of Utah State. He had four tackles and held Utah State to 136 total yards, only 57 in the air. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 1: 15. Jordan Battle, Sr, SS, Alabama, 6-0, 206,...Although situated at strong safety, Battle is as good, or better, in coverage as he is in tackling. Both are at a high level. In Bama's 55-0 dismantling of Utah State, Battle was credited with four tackles and had no interceptions, but hey, they pitched a shutout and allowed only 136 total yards, including a mere 57 in the air. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

Battle, a junior, is among the players being challenged this spring by Saban. The coach made that clear last week. "Jordan Battle does a good job," Saban said. "He plays a lot of good football, but it's kind of up to him as to how he wants to accept the role of leadership, how assertive he wants to be. People have to earn the right to be leaders. Now, they have to do things right themselves. They can't be late for meetings. They can't not do things exactly right. They have to set a good example for othe rs. They have to care enough about other people to help them for their benefits so that's his choice. "And that's a lot of players' choice on the team. Do they want to take that responsibility of being a leader? He has done that at times, and I think he would be very good if he chose to do it."Battle has been one of Alabama's more upfront players in interviews since first being made available to reporters last season. But the upbeat South Florida native feels it is time for him to make his voice heard around the locker room. "That's something that I'm comfortable with now because of the players I have before me who have shown me the way," he explained Tuesday. "Players last year like Landon Dickerson, Alex Leatherwood, Pat Surtain, guys like tha t. DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, guys like that showing me the way ever since I was a freshman. "So at this point, I'm more comfortable being vocal and getting on other players." - Birmingham News

Alabama defensive back Jordan Battle was ejected for targeting in the fourth quarter against Mississippi football on Saturday, Oct. 10. He hit Ole Miss receiver Elijah Moore with 2:14 left in the fourth quarter after Moore caught a 46-yard pass from quar terback Matt Corral. Since the targeting penalty occurred in the second half, Battle will miss the first half of the Alabama game against the Georgia Bulldogs on Oct. 17. Battle had 11 tackles and one pass breakup before leaving the game. Alabama led 56- 45 at the time Battle left the game. Alabama went on to win 63-48. - Montgomery Advertiser

Jordan Battle had time to grow into a full-time starting role. Xavier McKinney's positional flexibility allowed Battle to play as a deep safety primarily in Alabama's dime package, giving the then-freshmen the benefit of experience while limiting what he had to prepare for in a given week. He had no time to grow into a leadership role. Battle was expected to take on a bigger role in UA's defense as it replaced both safeties. The void left by those departing safeties also left a void in leadership, one B attle had no choice to fill as UA's most experienced defensive back outside of Patrick Surtain II.Battle's teammates and coaches think he handled the duties well in the season opener and look for more Saturday against Texas A&M. "He's shown a lot of maturity from last year to this year, which is not unusual from freshman to sophomore year," UA coach Nick Saban said. "I think he's got a good understanding of what we're doing. He's communicating better in the back end getting people on the same pag e. And I was really pleased with the way he played in the first game." Battle was tied for third on the team with six tackles against Missouri. The on-field aspect of things was one challenge. Battle had to get up to starting speed in the entire defensiv e schemes, as opposed to just the dime packages, which Saban says he has done. "I think sometimes when guys know their responsibility increases, their sense of urgency increases a little bit and that's what enables them to make even more progress, which has happened with a lot of guys," Saban said. - Montgomery Advertiser
