2022 OUTLAND TROPHY FINALIST (OUTSTANDING INTERIOR LINEMAN): Olusegun Oluwatimi, Michigan,...The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) has announced Oluwatimi as one of three finalists for the Outland Trophy, given to college football's best interior lineman. Oluwatimi's fellow finalists include Pitt's Calijah Kancey and fellow Big Ten representative Northwestern's Peter Skoronski. Oluwatimi is U-M's first finalist for the award since Jake Long (2007) and the program's fifth overall. No Wolverine has ever won the Outland Trophy. One other center (David Baas) was a finalist in 2004.

Oluwatimi anchors the nation's No. 4 rushing attack in the country (244.5 yards per game) which ranks as the Big Ten's best. The U-M offensive line, named a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award, has boosted the team's run game to 5.97 sack-adjusted yards per carry with nearly three rushing touchdowns per game (35 touchdowns, t-3rd, NCAA). In the passing game, the Wolverines have allowed only 13 sacks across 12 games. Oluwatimi has been charged with no sacks and only eight hurries on 340 pass-blocking snaps. Oluwatimi is one of two U-M linemen to start all 12 games this year. The tone-setter and signal-caller for the line, he has helped the offense reach No. 7 nationally in points per game (39.8). - Michigan Football

2022 RIMINGTON TROPHY FINALIST: Olusegun Oluwatimi, Michigan,...Oluwatimi is the fourth Wolverine to be named a finalist and would be the program's third winner, joining David Baas (2004, co-winner) and David Molk (2011). The winner will be named during ESPN's College Football Home Depot Awards Show on Thursday (Dec. 8). The honor comes after Oluwatimi helped the Wolverines reach 13 wins for the first time in program history (13-0) with a win over Purdue in the Big Ten Championship game last weekend.

U-M out-rushed Purdue 225-90 in the win. Oluwatimi is also a finalist for the Outland Trophy given to college football's best interior lineman. Recognized as an All-Big Ten first-team (coaches) honoree last week, Oluwatimi anchors the nation's No. 6 rushing attack in the country (243.0 yards per game) which ranks as the Big Ten's best.   The offensive line for the No. 2-ranked Michigan Wolverines was revealed as one of two finalists for the 2022 Joe Moore Award by the Foundation for Teamwork on Wednesday (Dec. 7). The other finalist group is the unit from No. 1-ranked Georgia. The Wolverines won the award in 2021 for the first time in program history and are seeking to be the first offensive line unit to ever win the award in consecutive seasons. The Joe Moore Award has been presented since 2015 and recognizes the most outstanding offensive line in college football. The voting committee trimming its finalist list to just two offensive line units is unprecedented in the award's history.

U-M saw starting guards Zak Zinter and Trevor Keegan pick up first-team All-Big Ten honors last week, while Olusegun Oluwatimi was first-team on the coaches' ballots. Oluwatimi is also a finalist for the Rimington Trophy and Outland Trophy. Ryan Hayes (second team, coaches) and Karsen Barnhart (honorable mention, both) were also All-Big Ten picks, marking the second year in a row that U-M has seen all five starters receive some type of all-conference recognition. Trente Jones (six starts) and Giovanni El-Hadi (three starts) are also major contributors to the group. This group is the engine behind U-M's offensive success. Last weekend, the Wolverines reached 13 wins for the first time in program history (13-0) with a win over Purdue in the Big Ten Championship game. U-M out-rushed Purdue 225-90 in the win. - Michigan Football

Learning the playbook, sure, that was a big deal for Michigan center Olu Oluwatimi, a graduate transfer from Virginia, who from all accounts had a solid grasp of it during spring practice after his January enrollment. But meshing with a new team, that was the challenge. It's one thing to be the new guy in a position group, but when the position is offensive line, which is all about the cohesiveness of the starting five, fitting in quickly is key.

That was Oluwatimi's real challenge. "As offensive linemen, it's not just you," Oluwatimi said Tuesday during a news conference. "I've got my left guard and right guard next to me. A lot of this game, to be good at offensive line is anticipation. If a blitzer is coming, be able to leave a second early and trust that your guard is going to be there. Being able to figure that out with the guys around me, I felt like that was more of a challenge than learning the playbook." But Oluwatimi has been successful at both. He knows the playbook, and the team, the offensive linemen, they know him now. He developed relationships by hanging out with the linemen, playing video games and enjoying meals together. It was a win-win for both sides. Oluwatimi was looking for a situation that might best prepare him for the NFL, and he saw that in Michigan's offensive line, which won the Joe Moore Award last season as the nation's top line. And Michigan was looking for a boost at center. He started three seasons at Virginia, was one of three Rimington Award finalists as the nation's top center last year, so he arrived at Michigan in January with a resume that turned heads. - Detroit News

The Football Writers Association of America has announced the preseason watch list for the 2022 Outland Trophy, recognizing 89 returning standout interior linemen representing all 10 Division I FBS conferences and independents. The 2022 season will close with the award's 77th anniversary and the watch list offers a talented field of players to accompany two returning FWAA All-Americans. The recipient of the 2022 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards, live on ESPN on Thurs., Dec. 8. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 11, 2023.

Atop the list are two returning FWAA All-Americans, Baylor center Jacob Gall and Michigan center Olusegun Oluwatimi, each a second-team All-America selection last year. Gall, a redshirt senior, is one of three Baylor players on the list, tops in nation among the 67 teams represented along with Clemson and defending national champion Georgia. Oluwatimi, now a graduate student, will be in the middle of Michigan's offensive line this fall after transferring from Virginia, where he guided the country's third-leading offense up front, one that averaged 516.3 yards per game. - Football Writers Association of America

Make no mistake, Olu Oluwatimi likes to have fun and joke around and is especially fond of cooking. But since his arrival earlier this year as a graduate transfer from Virginia, the experienced center has been all about football and acclimating to his new team. Oluwatimi started 32 straight games at center for the Cavaliers and last season was one of three finalists for the Rimington Award presented to the nation's top center. He will now anchor Michigan's offensive line, which won the Joe Moore Award last season as the nation's top line, and has been turning heads and drawing praise from his new teammates since before spring practice.

There are five individuals who start on an offensive line, but it's the position group most often described as a unit. The five must play in sync to work well. Oluwatimi said it took him a month to absorb the playbook, but his main focus has been on playing as one with his fellow linemen. "At the center position, it's more than just picking up the offense," Oluwatimi told The Detroit News at a recent team event with the Michigan National Guard. "You've got to jell with the guys around you. All of that is still a work in progress." Michigan opens preseason camp the first week of August, but Oluwatimi already seems to have acclimated well to his new school and team. "It's like he's been here four years," Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy said. "Besides his God-given talents and his freakish physique, that mental aspect is what is going to make him a first-round (NFL) pick in my eyes. Everything about him has been hitting the ground running, smooth. He's a leader on this team already." - Detroit News

By the time spring football started in late February, center Olu Oluwatimi already knew the playbook and all the calls. Considering Oluwatimi, a 6-foot-3, 310-pound grad transfer from Virginia who enrolled in January, that's a significant amount of learning in such a short amount of time. He acclimated quickly to his new team and environment and said his transition to Michigan was smooth. It isn't always easy for a player to transfer in, be the new guy and build relationships with teammates he has only just met.

But it didn't take long for Oluwatimi, a finalist last year for the Rimington Award given to the nation's best center, to make an impression. "One of the first days we put on pads, one-on-one pass rush, we saw him lock up some of our better D-linemen," left tackle Ryan Hayes said recently. "We go, 'Yeah, this guy is gonna be pretty good for us.' We knew early. He's gonna bring a lot of experience, a lot of maturity to our group." Running back Blake Corum smiled as he listened to Hayes' assessment. He also wanted to chime in on Oluwatimi, who is projected to be Michigan's starting center this fall. "One of the linebackers told me Olu got hold of him one practice, and the grip he had on him, he couldn't get out of it," Corum said. "He's a strong guy." Oluwatimi entered the NCAA's transfer portal in December after Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall stepped down. He has one year of eligibility, his bonus COVID-19 year, remaining. - Detroit News
