One of the Cincinnati players who won't be available for the Fenway Bowl is senior tight end Josh Whyle. The 2022 first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection announced Tuesday he is opting out of the bowl game to focus on preparing for the 2023 NFL Draft. "What I'll miss most about Cincinnati is the locker room," Whyle wrote to his Bearcats coaches and teammates in a Twitter post. "None of our goals and dreams would've been possible if it wasn't for the tight-knit bond we created. Thank you for always believing in me, trusting me, and pushing me to be the best version of myself."

Whyle, a former La Salle High School standout, also thanked his family, or the "Whyle Crew," and the Cincinnati fans, who Whyle said "made everything worth it." "With that said, this chapter of my life has come to an end, and another is beginning," Whyle wrote. "...I am excited for what's to come." Whyle became a three-time all-conference honoree last week, earning a 2022 first-team nod to go along with his honorable mention in 2021 and second-team honors in 2020. Whyle finished with 32 receptions for 326 yards and three touchdowns this season. Whyle ends his Cincinnati career with 15 touchdowns, the most career scores by a tight end in program history. - Cincinnati Enquirer

While there are question marks all over the field for the Bearcats, there are no questions at tight end. Whyle and graduate student Leonard Taylor are both back and ready to lead the Cincinnati offense. First-year Offensive Coordinator Gino Guidugli is expected to use a lot of 12 personnel (one running back and two tight ends) offensive formations this season that will feature both Whyle and Taylor, two players who earned spots on the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, presented annually to the top tight end in college football. "That was pretty cool," Whyle said of both players being on the list. "I think me and Lenny have a good relationship, healthy competition. We came in together and we've been buddies ever since. We're just pushing each other every day. There's no bad blood between us. I'm excited to do this final year with him." Whyle said he and Taylor will be roommates again at Higher Ground. "He snores like a damn cow," said Whyle. - Cincinnati Enquirer

  09/27/20 - TE Josh WhylerSr/2023, Cincinnati, 6-7, 248 (DS#10 TE) + More +

Right after Cincinnati Bearcats sophomore tight end Josh Whyle made the best catch of his college career, head coach Luke Fickell approached him on the sideline. Quarterback Desmond Ridder had just dropped back to pass on the 26-yard line, and Whyle streaked up the middle of the field. An Austin Peay defensive back pounded Whyle as he went to make the catch at the 2-yard line, but Whyle held onto the ball anyway. After Whyle led the Bearcats into the red-zone, Fickell found Whyle on the sideline and said, "If that would have been last year, you would have been broke in half."

In UC's 55-20 win over Austin Peay in Week 1, Whyle finished with three catches for 61 yards, which was more than any other Bearcats tight end or wide receiver. It was equally important that Whyle stayed in the game since he has been injury prone throughout his college career. Fickell and the Bearcats coaching staff had been anticipating a moment like this from Whyle for a while. "Where he was year was from year one and year two to where he is now is a far cry," Fickell said. "For the first time people are seeing what I probably saw in the winter." In reality, Fickell has seen something in Whyle since he started coaching at UC. - Cincinnati Enquirer
