2023 ALL-BIG TEN HONORABLE MENTION: Erick All,...All is Iowa's third-leading receiver despite missing the final five games because of injury. He made 21 catches for 299 yards and a team-best three touchdowns before suffering a season-ending injury in the road win at Wisconsin. It is the second time All has earned honorable-mention All-Big Ten recognition (2021 at Michigan). - Iowa Football

Erick All, a former all-Big Ten honorable mention, had 38 catches for 437 receiving yards in 2021. A back injury that required surgery cut his 2022 season short. His 38 catches in 2021 were the most for a Michigan tight end since Jake Butt had 46 in 2016. "I feel like I'm more of a natural pass-catcher, route-runner," All said. "But I want to be all-around. I want to be a great blocker as well." Now, All is one of the top two tight ends at a school that has had a 50-plus-catch tight end in back-to-back seasons. "They definitely have a recipe with these tight ends," All said. All also has the benefit of already having a rapport with new Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara, who also transferred from Michigan after the 2022 season. "It's always great to have someone around that you're close with and have known for a while," All said. All and McNamara were roommates at Michigan although they are not living together at Iowa. "We grew out of that," All said. - Iowa Press Citizen

This is the time of year for some blustery talk from college football coaches in the weeks leading to the start of the season. You know it when you hear it and chalk it up to coachspeak. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has been known to use a few superlatives here and there in describing players and coaches and sometimes has gone over the top talking up the prospects of a player who then never gets on the field. During Big Ten media days last month, Harbaugh spoke highly of tight ends Erick All and Luke Schoonmaker, and this felt like real talk based on their performances last season. All had 38 catches for 437 yards and two touchdowns, including the winning 47-yard score at Penn State despite running on a bum ankle.

Schoonmaker had 17 catches for 165 yards and three touchdowns. Schoonmaker (6-foot-6, 250 pounds) and All (6-5, 260) were All-Big Ten honorable mention selections for their play during the 2021 season. They are both on the preseason watch list for the Mackey Award, which is given to the nation's most outstanding tight end. Jake Butt won the Mackey in 2016 and is the only Michigan player to do so, but Harbaugh believes he has two tight ends capable of being the nation's best. "Erick All, in my opinion, his biggest competition for being the best tight end in the country will be Luke Schoonmaker. And I think Luke Schoonmaker's toughest competition to be the best tight end in America will be Erick All," Harbaugh said at media days. - Detroit News

If there was ever an on-field moment that sums up Erick All, it was the cold, wet afternoon last November at Penn State. Nursing a high-ankle sprain that sidelined him a week earlier, and had Nittany Lions defenders feeling confident in their ability to keep up with the 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end, All surprised everyone. As quarterback Cade McNamara dropped back to pass, Michigan successfully ran a mesh route that sent two receivers from the right side of the field to left, confusing Penn State players and leaving a streaking All wide open over the field of the field.

Not only did he catch the football, but he darted up field more than 40 yards for a touchdown, outrunning everyone after him. "I mean, he was two weeks off a high-ankle sprain and he was doing that," Michigan tight ends coach Grant Newsome, a graduate assistant coach at the time, recently recalled. "I think he's a really, really special athlete." Newsome isn't the only Michigan assistant to heap praise on All, who enters his senior year this fall. It was offensive line coach (formerly in charge of the tight ends) Sherrone Moore who just a couple of years ago set the expectation high for the Fairfield, Ohio, native. The coaches saw something special in All early on, not only in his big, athletic frame but his natural ability and over-the-top work ethic. "We have to try and pull him back sometimes, because he just wants to kill everything," Newsome said. "He wants to hit, hit, hit. And that's great - but we're trying to be smart about that." - Ann Arbor News

Michigan tight end Erick All woke up on Saturday with a sore ankle, a leftover reminder of the Wolverines' last painful loss. Inside a packed, hostile Beaver Stadium, he was able to block out the discomfort enough to help No. 9 Michigan stay in the Big Ten championship chase with a 21-17 win over No. 23 Penn State. All hauled in a 47-yard touchdown pass from Cade McNamara with 3:29 left and outran Penn State defenders to the end zone. Michigan (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten, No. 6 CFP) snapped a two-game skid to the Nittany Lions (6-4, 3-4). "I'm sure he wasn't thinking about that ankle," Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said. "He was thinking about the team." And what another loss would mean for the Wolverines' chance to end their 16-year championship drought.

All was hurt when the Wolverines fell to No. 8 Michigan State on Oct. 30 and didn't play last week in a win over Indiana. He knew the Wolverines needed to stay within reach of the Spartans and No. 6 Ohio State in the Big Ten East. "Adrenaline took care of the rest," All said. Michigan visits Maryland next before hosting the No. 6 Buckeyes on Nov. 27. "It's going to be tough for sure," McNamara said. "That game is going to be so big for us and I know when the moment comes, we'll be ready." McNamara completed 19 of 29 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns and Hassan Haskins ran for 156 yards on 31 carries. Roman Wilson caught a pair of touchdown passes for the Wolverines, who led 14-6 midway through the fourth quarter. - Michigan/AP College Football

All is in his third season at tight end for Michigan, but this could finally be his breakout year. All is 6-4, 245 pounds and coaches have raved about his skill. Yet, last season, while he finished with 12 catches for 82 yards in six games, the first part of his season was marked by dropped balls. All said he was done in by a lack of confidence that he began to rebuild just as the season was cut short. The Wolverines have talent at tight end with Luke Schoonmaker, as well, but All could be the one leading the way. - Detroit News

Michigan's Erick All has his confidence back. The sophomore tight end nearly had as many dropped passes (four) than receptions (five) in the first three games of the season. But All has gone two games since without a drop and has six catches during that span, including four for 27 yards in Saturday's 48-42 triple-overtime victory over Rutgers. "Obviously, it was irritating dropping the ball," All told reporters Monday. "I don't even know why I was dropping it, but it was irritating because I knew how good of hands I had. I just felt like I just needed to trust myself, and once I found that trust in the Rutgers game, I felt confident. I felt like a new person took over me. I just felt like I had a different energy and it just made me a better player for this team."

On Nov. 11, tight ends coach Sherrone Moore said All was making "spectacular" catches regularly during practice but felt the former four-star prospect from Ohio was overthinking during games. All had a drop that would have been an easy touchdown in Michigan's opener and also had a costly one on third down against Indiana in Week 3. "After I dropped the first ball in the Minnesota game, I think it was just in my head," All said. "Thank god it's out because, man, I was down for a little bit." - Ann Arbor News

Erick All's dropped touchdown pass in the third quarter of Saturday's win over Minnesota caught many on the Michigan sideline by surprise. The sophomore tight end has a reputation for catching anything thrown his way in practice, a trait that helped him get onto the field as a true freshman in 2019. So when offensive coordinator Josh Gattis called the very next play for All, a short flip pass to him behind the line of scrimmage, he made the most of it by picking up 23 yards for a first down. "I was just way too excited," All told reporters Monday over a video conference call. "I felt like the coaches knew that. If it weren't for that second opportunity, it probably would have been in my head. I felt like the coaches knew that they had confidence that I don't really drop balls, for real. "I just thank God that the coaches believed in me and I was able to get out there for the second play and do what was right."

Head coach Jim Harbaugh called All one of the "unheralded" offensive players in Michigan's 49-24 win over the Golden Gophers, praising his blocking for helping set free some of those big plays. All got the start - the first of his career - after Nick Eubanks was unavailable to Michigan. "His blocking was phenomenal," Harbaugh said Monday. "In line, on the perimeter - just tremendous. He had the opportunity for the touchdown. It was just so natural for him catching, that he pulled his head away just as the ball was coming in. He just expects to catch everything - and always does." All came to Michigan in 2019 as a project tight end. He played receiver all throughout high school and become used to running routes and catching the football. - Ann Arbor News
