South Carolina defensive back Cam Smith is leaving the 20th-ranked Gamecocks for the NFL. Smith, the 6-foot, 188-pound junior, announced his decision on social media Friday. He is considered a first-round NFL draft pick. Smith thanked his teammates, coac hes, team personnel and fans. South Carolina's NFL Draft history is semi-limited compared with some of its Southeastern Conference counterparts, but the 2022 season may be a major step toward changing that. Quarterback Spencer Rattler, cornerback Cam Smith and wide back Jaheim Bell c ould all conceivably be in play as first-round selections should they live up to their respective preseason hype. And while there's still a season to be played, the added attention on those in Columbia isn't something the Gamecocks are shying away from. "There's no doubt when high school recruits are watching the NFL Draft and they see players from your school getting drafted, that's a great thing," head coach Shane Beamer said ahead of a Gamecock Club event in Anderson on Tuesday.South Carolina hasn't ever been an NFL factory in the way programs like Alabama, Georgia and Florida have been over the past 20 years, but USC isn't devoid of recent draft history by any stretch. The Gamecocks have had at least one player selected in the first round in three of the past five drafts. South Carolina has also had at least one prospect taken in 19 of the past 20 NFL Drafts - including one or more every year between 2002 and 2017. - Rock Hill Herald

South Carolina football will be without one of its key defensive cogs heading into fall camp. Junior cornerback Cam Smith is currently battling back from a cracked bone in his left foot. Smith told reporters he had a procedure on the injury Friday. "Righ t now I feel great," he said. "I feel like if they would let me take the cast off right now I'd probably start running." Exactly how the injury happened was not revealed. During Thursday's preseason media day in Columbia, Smith came and went on a scooter while his foot was wrapped in a cast. Head coach Shane Beamer said the expectation is that Smith will be ready to practice soon and the hope is he'll be available for the Sept. 4 opener. The coach described the surgery as "a pretty simple procedure." Sm ith reiterated Beamer's message and said he feels good as he works his way back to full health. "He'll be out starting practice and not fully cleared," Beamer said. "But again, expect him to be ready for for game one." - Rock Hill Herald
