Jacob Copeland, Maryland, Player News

In 2018, wide receiver Jacob Copeland was thrown into the spotlight before playing a single snap at the college level. During his commitment ceremony at Escambia High School in Pensacola, Florida, when he chose Florida over Alabama and Tennessee, his mot her, Betty, promptly walked away from the table in apparent displeasure with her son's decision. The moment became a viral sensation on social media. Copeland, who transferred to Maryland after four seasons at Florida, is still remembered for that moment , though he admitted he tries not to think about it. Copeland knows it was just miscommunication between him and his mother, and he leaves it at that. "There were rumors about certain things, but there was never any bad blood between me and my momma," he said. "I was raised by my momma in a house with my six brothers. The internet is going to talk, but the inside people know what really went on." Even though Copeland, a junior, garnered attention early, he is not the type of person who wants to be the c enter of it.When he entered the transfer portal in December, he could've gone to a school where he would have been a No. 1 wideout. Instead, he came to College Park, hoping to fit in and add to Maryland's already talented wide receivers room, whic h has the potential to be one of the best in the Big Ten Conference. "Why go somewhere and be just the guy?" said Copeland, a former four-star recruit. "I can go somewhere and be with the guys, and when we go against defenses, they're like, 'How are we g oing to pick our poison?" Copeland had 84 catches for 1,331 yards and nine touchdowns at Florida, including a team-high 642 yards and four touchdowns on 41 receptions in 11 starts last season. - Baltimore Sun

Florida wide receiver Jacob Copeland announced his intentions to transfer Thursday, becoming the fifth UF player and first starter to enter the portal since the hiring of new coach Billy Napier. Copeland, a redshirt junior, led the Gators in receiving th is season with 39 catches for 607 yards and four touchdowns. However, he has expressed frustrations on social media this year over his lack of targets. "After much thought, prayer and discussion with my friends and family, I have made the decision to ent er the Transfer Portal," Copeland wrote in his farewell note on Twitter. "This has not been an easy decision or one that I have taken lightly; however, I want to do what is best for my development by pursuing my goals and furthering my career." Copeland has totaled 84 catches for 1,331 yards and nine touchdowns in his career, while adding 65 rushing yards on eight carries. He plans to play in the Gasparilla Bowl against UCF on Dec. 23. - Gainesville Sun

With great power comes great responsibility. The same could be said for jersey No. 1 at the University of Florida. Some of the previous football players to wear No. 1 in orange and blue include safety Reggie Nelson (2006), receiver Percy Harvin (2007-08) , defensive back Vernon Hargreaves III (2013-15) and, more recently, defensive back CJ Henderson (2019) and receiver Kadarius Toney (2019-20). Linebacker Brenton Cox Jr. wears No. 1 on defense. Besides all wearing No. 1 these former Gator stars have some thing else in common- they were all first-round NFL draft picks.Hoping to live up to that standard this season will be redshirt junior Jacob Copeland. "It's a really big privilege and I feel like I'll be accountable for everything that comes with the number," said Copeland, who wore No. 1 at Pensacola Escambia High School. Copeland started 11 games last season and finished the year with 435 yards and three touchdowns. His 23 receptions, however, were good enough for sixth on the team behind All-A mericans Toney (70), Kyle Pitts (43), Trevon Grimes (38), Malik Davis (31) and Justin Shorter (25). With the top three on that list now in the NFL, Copeland knows it is finally his time to shine. His former teammates agree. "I actually spoke with all of them yesterday, last night," he said. "Talking to me about camp, making sure everything all right, making sure my mindset ready to go into the season and let me know that you've got to stay focused because this a big year ahead of me." - Gainesville Sun
