Former Auburn linebacker Owen Pappoe won't play in the upcoming Reese's Senior Bowl due to injury, executive director Jim Nagy confirmed Friday. Pappoe's withdrawal leaves fellow linebackers Etu Leota and Derick Hall as the Tigers' representatives in the annual college football all-star game and NFL draft showcase, set for Feb. 4 at Mobile's Hancock Whitney Stadium. Pappoe's exit was "disappointing," Nagy said. "Owen's not going to be able to come, unfortunately," Nagy said in an appearance on Mobile's SportsTalk 99.5 FM. "I felt like he needed it [to participate in Senior Bowl week]. Everyone knows that Owen can run...But coming down here, I thought he could help himself in coverage and in the interviews. The guys up at Auburn rave about his intellige nce, his football acumen and his work ethic. "That was a disappointing one. I know he was dealing with some sort of injury. He just wanted to be 100% full-go for the combine."Pappoe, a former 5-star recruit, totaled a team-best 91 tackles, along w ith three tackles for loss and an interception in 12 games. However, he has reportedly been dealing with a shoulder injury in recent weeks. Pappoe's injury won't require surgery, according to reports. He is expected to participate in the NFL Combine and Auburn's Pro Day, leading into the April 27-29 NFL draft. - Birmingham News

Auburn football has signified its player-led leadership for the upcoming season, naming tight end John Samuel Shenker, linebacker Owen Pappoe and edge rusher Derick Hall its team captains Tuesday, less than two weeks ahead of the season. Although he was considered a potential draft prospect, Pappoe decided to return to Auburn for his senior season after suffering a leg injury in 2021 that forced him to miss the bulk of the Tigers' season. Pappoe was also voted a team captain ahead of the 2021 season, lo gging 93 tackles as a sophomore in what was considered an All-SEC campaign. "Getting Owen back from the spring was huge in terms of leadership, in terms of how he makes other people feel when he's out there with them," linebackers coach Christian Robinso n said. "And I'm very proud of him and the strides that he's taken to come back into being conditioned and ready to perform. So he's done an awesome job with that." - Birmingham News

The first question of the day for Owen Pappoe couldn't have been simpler, but it put an ear-to-ear grin on the fourth-year linebacker's face. "How are you feeling?" Understandably, Pappoe was good. Fresh out of the helmet for the first time in a long tim e, it had been months since he was on a football field and helming Auburn's defense. Last year, Pappoe suffered a leg injury that took him off the field on multiple occasions, keeping him out of eight of Auburn's 13 games, including its final four. After logging 142 tackles and not missing a game in his first two seasons, Pappoe totaled just 23 stops in five contests in 2021.The linebacker missed all of spring practice recovering, and Friday marked the first time he was a full go for an Auburn pr actice since the middle of last season. He made it evident he wasn't taking it for granted. "I'm actually glad it happened in a way," Pappoe said of his injury. "You hear all the time, when you have former players come to speak and they kind of tell you the game could be taken away from you at any minute. Hearing it, it's like, 'OK, let me go hard because there's people who have been there that wish they could do it again.' But actually going through it, bro, it's a whole other feeling. "It's given me a whole new appreciation for the game, and it makes me want to go even harder than I ever have before." In the second half of Auburn's 28-20 loss at Penn State, Pappoe left with a leg injury and was out for the next four games, returning for the Tigers' g ames against Ole Miss and Texas A&M before being sidelined for the remainder of the season. - Opelika-Auburn News

Colby Wooden never experienced a losing season in his life, at least not until last fall. Auburn's 6-7 campaign, which saw the team lose five straight games to end the season, marked the program's first losing record since 2012. It was a difficult season for Wooden and many of his teammates to endure. "That was a tough pill to swallow," Wooden said. In the wake of that season, Bryan Harsin's first as head coach of the Tigers, Auburn saw considerable turnover both on its roster and its coaching staff. Ni neteen players transferred out of the program after the season, and the staff was overhauled, all part of a tumultuous offseason that cast uncertainty over the direction of the program.Wooden was one of a trio of Auburn defenders who considered le aving, not through the transfer portal, but to declare early for the NFL Draft. Wooden, edge defender Derick Hall and linebacker Owen Pappoe all weighed their options but ultimately chose to return for another season on the Plains-a chance to improve the ir stock individually, as well as an opportunity at redemption for the program. "It's just unfinished business, man," Pappoe said. "We didn't want to go out like that, for real, bro. Me, personally, I'm tired of losing, and that's the message we've all b een preaching to the team. We want to come out and make a difference this year, so we're going into this season with a chip on our shoulder." For Pappoe, the decision was a simpler one. He has been a starter at linebacker since the first game of his fres hman season, and he entered last year as a potential early-round NFL Draft pick. Those hopes were dashed, though, as he dealt with an injury that sidelined him for all but five games and required postseason surgery to correct. - Birmingham News

Linebacker is a premium position for new defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding. The linebacker room will look different with the departures of McClain and Wooten. Owen Pappoe returning was impactful for head coach Bryan Harsin. Auburn wants to win games with a sound defense that stops the run. They'll need the linebacker unit to succeed if it wants to improve on last season's record. Another losing streak can't happen if Harsin intends to stay at Auburn, and the LB room will be pivotal to his outcomes. Auburn lost two stars players when McClain and Wooten left the Plains. Pappoe is an elite player when healthy. New linebackers coach Christian Robinson will be counting on solid contributions from Pappoe this season. If younger players can elevate, then it'll be good for Auburn. If Tisdol or Willis struggle to find footing, it'll be rough on a defense that counts heavily on its linebackers. Steiner is another player who could be essential. - Birmingham News

Auburn opens the season with five consecutive home games against Mercer, San Jose State, Penn State, Missouri and LSU before traveling to face defending national champion Georgia. When a reporter prefaced a question with the statement that the Tigers hav e a tough schedule, Harsin butted in for a quick second. "Does anybody have an easy schedule in the SEC?" Harsin asked. The reporter went on to ask about the importance of getting off to a hot start with the five at home to open the season. "Home or away , you want to get off to a fast start regardless," Harsin said. "It's great to be in Jordan-Hare Stadium. "To be around our fans, to have those teams coming in, playing in Jordan-Hare, we're excited about that. Hopefully we're having success through thos e five games." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Perhaps no one in the Tigers facility other than head coach Bryan Harsin is seeking a redemptive 2022 campaign more than Owen Pappoe. The Senior linebacker entered the 2021 season with high hopes for a marriage of team and individual success leading him to become a high-round draft pick. Pappoe started in his first game as a freshman in 2019 against Oregon at Jordan Hare. He started every game he played in until getting injured against Penn State in a road loss last season. Pappoe had 49 tackles and two sacks in 2019 as a freshman. He followed the solid freshman season in 2020 with four sacks and 93 tackles. He also entered the 2021 season as an All-SEC selection. Alas, the injury derailed Pappoe's season in a way that mirrored the final five games for the Tigers.Pappoe was limited in spring football because of the ailment but was actively engaged with the team. He should be a full participant this fall. "Owen, yeah, he is not practicing now, but in the long run, that is going to be the best th ing because they are getting those things fixed," defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding said. There's a guy who is not practicing, but is as locked-in and diligent about everything he does as I have seen." "He takes care of his body. It is an opportunity to lead in a little different way than maybe he wants to, but he is a kid who is learning the game even as he is watching. A lot of guys can't do that. He does that." - Birmingham News

Auburn's defense will return another key component in 2022. Linebacker Owen Pappoe announced on Instagram on Sunday afternoon that he will be returning to the Plains for his senior season. Pappoe joins defensive lineman Colby Wooden and edge defender Der ick Hall as underclassmen on the Tigers' defense who will be back next season after mulling NFL decisions. "Run it back!" Pappoe posted in a graphic on his Instagram account. The photo was accompanied by a caption that read, "gotta finish this thing the right way! Year 4 OTW (on the way)." The return of Pappoe - one of Auburn's two permanent captains this season - is welcome news for an Auburn linebacker corps that is set to lose leading tackler and All-SEC selection Zakoby McClain, as well as co-captai n Chandler Wooten, who was second on the team with 94 total tackles, just two behind McClain's 96 on the year. Pappoe appeared in just five games for Auburn this fall while dealing with a lingering ankle injury for much of the season. He missed Auburn's final four games, though he did participate in bowl practices, and finished his injury-shortened junior campaign with 23 tackles, including three for a loss, and a pair of quarterback hurries. - Birmingham News

Last week, Auburn linebacker Owen Pappoe thought back to one of his earliest experiences with the Tigers. Pappoe earned an offer from Auburn as an eighth grader, and later on he visited the campus to tour what proved to be his home at the next level. Pap poe remembers his guide showing him the captain bricks, which commemorate the team's various captains by displaying their names for years to come. Pappoe said he thought about what it would be like to see his name among those many bricks one day. Now, Pa ppoe knows that day will be arriving soon. The Opelika-Auburn News' Jordan Hill and Justin Lee discuss Bryan Harsin's absence and all the latest from the end of fall camp.Pappoe was selected as one of Auburn's two permanent captains for the 2021 s eason, with the other being fellow linebacker Chandler Wooten. Pappoe's status was a well-earned one given his production over the last two years, and it has the junior eager to accomplish even more this fall. "It was amazing," Pappoe said Thursday of be ing named a captain. "Just to be selected by my teammates means a lot. It shows me that all of the work I have been putting in for leadership and just handling my business on the field is paying off. It's an amazing feeling. I'm excited and ready to lead ." Pappoe helped stablish himself as a grinder for Auburn last season when he and fellow linebacker Zakoby McClain hardly came off the field, which resulted in Pappoe racking up 93 tackles and five games of double-digit tackles. - Opelika-Auburn News

The reputation of Auburn's linebacker room has experienced a rebirth in recent years. The Tigers went 14 years without a first-team All-SEC player at the position, but that changed in 2018 with Deshaun Davis' selection. That was part of a renaissance at linebacker for Auburn that included the likes of Davis, Tre' Williams and K.J. Britt, as well as the team's two leading tacklers a year ago, Zakoby McClain and Owen Pappoe. With McClain and Pappoe back again this fall, and with the return of vetera n Chandler Wooten, Auburn is feeling confident about how its linebacker corps stacks up to the competition. "I'm going to take us over anybody," Pappoe said. "I think we have the best linebacker room in the country." That's quite a proclamation from Papp oe, a junior who has been a Day 1 starter since arriving as a five-star freshman in 2019, but it also exudes the type of confidence that can invigorate players when it comes from a team captain. Pappoe this week was elected by teammates as one of Auburn' s two permanent captains for the upcoming season, with Wooten chosen as the other. - Birmingham News

A pair of veteran linebackers will serve as Auburn's team captains this season. Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin announced Wednesday morning that junior Owen Pappoe and senior Chandler Wooten were selected as team captains, as chosen by their teammates, ca lling it "the ultimate honor." Pappoe is heading into his third season as a starter at linebacker for Auburn, and the former five-star recruit is coming off a season in which he was second on the team with 93 tackles, including six for a loss, and tied f or the team lead with four sacks. He was one of Auburn's two player representatives at SEC Media Days last month -- with Harsin joking at the time that he brought Pappoe to Hoover because "you don't want that guy upset with you" -- and he also represente d the team last Saturday during Auburn's dedication ceremony for its new Football Performance Center that is currently under construction."He is, without question, a leader on our football team," Harsin said at SEC Media Days last month. "Guys res pect him. He does things right. He works himself to the best of his ability every single day. Does all the things you ask him to do. He's incredible in the weight room and running and some of the testing that we did. So I'm excited about Owen. Owen's a g uy that I have tremendous respect for. If anybody is going to represent our program, Owen Pappoe is going to be one of them.... He's a good man and he's going to be a hell of a player for us this year, there's no doubt about it." - Birmingham News

Now, with his junior season quickly approaching, Pappoe has a newfound sense of self-assurance. "I actually was talking to my dad about this earlier this week: It's just finally found that confidence that I needed to go out there and make plays," Pappoe said on Thursday at SEC Media Days. "I feel my confidence is through the roof. I feel really it's a different energy coming in this off-season from preparation, film study, and all that. "I'm really excited to see what happens this season, and I feel rea lly good about it." Pappoe's confidence was evident going back to Auburn's coaching change this offseason. Harsin told reporters Thursday that Pappoe was one of the first players to meet him once he got to Auburn and settled in as the Tigers' new head co ach. Harsin said he was immediately struck by Pappoe's professionalism, and the moment demonstrated to Harsin the type of leader he had on the Tigers' defense."Guys respect him. He does things right," Harsin said. "I'm excited about Owen. Owen's a guy that I have tremendous respect for. If anybody is going to represent our program, Owen Pappoe is going to be one of them. He'll do a great job today [at Media Days]. He'll answer honestly. He's a good man and he's going to be a hell of a player for us this year, there's no doubt about it. "He's one of the reasons why I feel like our team has made the decision to continue to keep improving and growing and doing the things we're asking them to do because we've got some leadership on our team from guy s like him." - Opelika-Auburn News

Sophomore linebacker Owen Pappoe said the Iron Bowl loss hurt a lot but that everyone is aware there's more games to be played. He stressed the importance of turning the page and moving onto the next opponent, which is another dangerous team in No. 5 Tex as A&M. The Tigers were undoubtedly distraught after the performance in Tuscaloosa, but Pappoe explained the conversation after the loss centered on moving on as quickly as they could. "We've just got to come together and just stay together. We can't let this tear us apart. We haven't had the season we wanted to have, but we've got to learn from everything that we messed up on," Pappoe said. "This has to make us a stronger team for the following game and into next season, when we go into the spring and the season after that. We can't fold. We've just got to learn from this. It's going to make us stronger." - Opelika-Auburn News

With senior linebacker K.J. Britt sidelined due to thumb surgery, all eyes were on Auburn's other linebackers Saturday in their first test without the team's leading tackler. While the performance wasn't perfect, the group showed they were willing to do what was asked of them in order to keep the Tigers in contention. Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn had previously named sophomore Owen Pappoe and junior Zakoby McClain as two players who needed to step up in Britt's absence, and against the Razorbacks the d uo delivered. McClain was Auburn's leading tackler with 13 tackles to go with two quarterback hurries, while Pappoe followed close behind with 10 tackles and a sack.Malzahn announced on Sunday that McClain and Pappoe each earned Auburn's defensive helmet stickers for their play against the Razorbacks. For Pappoe, the linebackers' collective play was the product of a mentality in which whoever is on the field has got to deliver. "I honestly think we all stepped up. It wasn't perfect, but due to th e players we lost we all stepped up and did the best we could," Pappoe said on Saturday. "(It's) all hands on deck. We have the mentality of next man up. We were talking before the game like, 'This one's for KJ.' We went out there and gave our all … We just have to keep being prepared for that, and I think we'll be alright going down the line." - Opelika-Auburn News

For Pappoe, who ended the day with eight tackles and one sack, the strong finish after a so-so start was only natural given how long the Tigers had gone without a game. "I think, obviously, with the first game since last year - since earlier this year in the bowl game - we had some rust to knock off. At the end, we ended up pulling through and did a good job," Pappoe said. "We're going to correct all the mistakes we made this week in practice, so we're going to be even better next week." The Tigers were on their heels at times Saturday, although even their worst points only led to seven points for Kentucky in the first half and six in the second. Now, Auburn hopes to grow from the performance when it hits the road to face a Georgia offense that i s still trying to figure things out. "It's the saying that everybody knows: It's not about how you start. It's how you finish," Pappoe said. "We were rusty the first half, but we knew we had to come out the second half and execute. We just knew the ultim ate goal is to win. That means do whatever you can. No matter what the situation is, make sure you win. We just knew the ultimate goal, and everybody kept the course." - Opelika-Auburn News

Owen Pappoe had his eye on the No. 0 long before the NCAA approved the change to make it an eligible jersey number back in April. It's actually something Pappoe has wanted since well before he stepped foot on the Plains. "I was trying to get it in high s chool, but it was the same as college; it wasn't an eligible number," Pappoe said. "So, when I heard they were going to pass it, I told Coach, 'Hey, Coach, I want to one of the first guys to get dibs.'" Pappoe, who wore No. 10 as a freshman last season, heard rumors about a looming change in the legality of the No. 0 months before the NCAA voted on the change. It was back in December or January, he said, that he first became aware of the possibility and approached his coaches about it.According t o Pappoe, Auburn's coaches had not heard about the possibility of that change yet-but assured him that if it happened, he would get the opportunity to change jersey numbers Then in February, the NCAA Football Rules Committee recommended the change to all ow players to wear No. 0 in response to the popularity of single-digit numbers. Two months later, in April, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved of the new rule, opening up an opportunity for hundreds of players across the country to rock the peculiar jersey number. - Birmingham News

Auburn returns its key core of four linebackers from last season in seniors K.J. Britt and Chandler Wooten, junior Zakoby McClain and sophomore Owen Pappoe. While Britt (12 starts, with the lone exception the LSU game when Auburn utilized a 3-1-7 scheme) and Pappoe (13 starts) were staples in the starting lineup, the Tigers relied on all four of these players rotating at linebacker throughout the season. As linebackers coach Travis Williams likes to say: Auburn doesn't have starters at linebacker; it ha s standards. These four have helped raise the standard at the position for the Tigers, who have reshaped the linebacker corps since Steele's arrival and Williams took over the room. Britt earned All-SEC honors last year, in his first season as a st arter, and will be the voice of Auburn's defense in 2020. Pappoe finished as the team's sixth-leading tackler last season and was the first true freshman to make an impact at linebacker since at least 2012. - Birmingham News

Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele has agreed to a three-year contract through the 2022 season. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn announced the deal on Wednesday. The school did not release terms of the contract. Steele was set to make about $1.9 million l ast year. Auburn has ranked in the top 20 nationally in scoring defense in each of Steele's four seasons. Besides the Tigers, only four other FBS programs have held opponents under 20 points per game in each of the last four seasons. Auburn's defense pro duced two potential high NFL draft picks this season, defensive tackle Derrick Brown and defensive end Marlon Davidson. - AP College Football
