The sack was his sixth of the season and marked his 11th TFL. The forced fumble was his third of the season. Applied a game-high three QB pressures. Was on the field for all but t wo snaps as Auburn hold its opponent to less than 100 yards rushing for the second straight game and to just 215 total yards. Auburn fired coach Bryan Harsin on Monday after less than two seasons, ending a rocky tenure in which the Tigers struggled to compete in the Southeastern Conference. Harsin went 9-12 overall and 3-5 this year. Auburn has lost four straight games while st ruggling against Power Five opponents, including a 41-27 loss to Arkansas on Oct. 29. Auburn will owe Harsin 70% of his remaining contract - more than $15 million - and half of that must be paid within 30 days. "President (Chris) Roberts made the decisio n after a thorough review and evaluation of all aspects of the football program," the school said in a brief statement announcing the move. "Auburn will begin an immediate search for a coach that will return the Auburn program to a place where it is cons istently competing at the highest levels and representing the winning tradition that is Auburn football," the statement said.Auburn canceled its weekly football football news conference about 90 minutes before Harsin was scheduled to speak. Harsin was hired away from Boise State in December 2020 and Auburn gave him a six-year, $31.5 million deal. He never came close to replicating his past success and failed to keep up with rivals Georgia and Alabama on the field or on the recruiting trail. Those results were unacceptable to a program that won a national title in 2010 and is accustomed to contending for SEC championships. The Tigers struggled throughout the season, with the normally reliable defense giving up 40-plus points three times while the offensive issues never resolved. The biggest struggles came in the second half, when Auburn failed to score a touchdown against both Missouri and LSU. - AP College Football

Auburn will have to overcome some low outside expectations if it hopes to turn heads during Bryan Harsin's second season. Auburn was picked to finish last in the SEC West this season, as voted on by the media at SEC Media Days this week in Atlanta. Rival Alabama was picked to finish atop the division and to win the conference title, while defending national champion Georgia was picked to finish first in the SEC East. Auburn earned 338 vote points in the preseason media poll, which was second-fewest amon g all SEC teams, ahead of only Vanderbilt -- which, incidentally, received one vote to win the SEC title this season. The Tigers' 338 points were 52 behind Mississippi State, which was picked to finish sixth in the division. Texas A&M was picked to finish second in the West, behind Alabama, followed by Arkansas, Ole Miss and LSU. Auburn was picked to finish fifth last season, Harsin's first year on the Plains, and finished sixth in the SEC West thanks to a historic backslide at the end of the year . The Tigers went 6-7 inn 2021, losing five straight games to end the year following a 6-2 start to Harsin's inaugural season. Last year's record marked the program's first losing season since 2012, when the Tigers went 3-9. - Birmingham News

Colby Wooden could have declared for the NFL Draft this offseason, but he instead decided to return to Auburn for his redshirt junior year. That was one of the biggest wins of the offseason for Bryan Harsin's program, as the 6-foot-5, 284-pound defensive lineman checks in at No. 4 on AL.com's MVP 10 list heading into 2022. Wooden was a force along the line for Auburn last season, posting career-highs in tackles (61), sacks (five) and quarterback hurries (seven). His 8.5 tackles for loss were one off his career-best from 2020 (9.5) and are third-most among Auburn's returning players this fall, behind only edge-rushers Derick Hall (12.5 in 2021) and Eku Leota (10).Wooden will aim to build off those numbers as a junior this fall as he anchors what should be a stout unit along the defensive line - a group that returns Hall and Leota on the edge, as well as Marcus Harris and other promising depth pieces while adding the likes of Jayson Jones, Jeffrey M'Ba, Marcus Bragg and Morris Joseph Jr. After fl ourishing in a new role in 2021, Wooden should bring All-SEC potential to the interior of Auburn's defensive line - and if his trajectory continues into 2022, it could be a harbinger of just how good the Tigers' defensive front can be this season under n ew defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding. - Birmingham News

Entering this season, Auburn needed someone along the defensive line to lighten the blow of losing defensive tackle Derrick Brown and defensive end Marlon Davidson to the NFL. It didn't take long for redshirt freshman Colby Wooden to stand up to that imm ense challenge. Wooden has been a revelation up front in his second year as a Tiger, as he's recorded 36 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss - which leaves him second in the SEC - three sacks and three quarterback hurries through eight games. Wooden's emergenc e has been crucial for Auburn, and his youth is the cherry on top given he's just getting started. For him, the 2020 season has been enjoyable but also a constant learning experience."It's meant a lot, the fact that I get to come in and help my te ammates after not contributing last year. It just feels great to be a contributing member of the team this year," Wooden said. " [The biggest lesson is] just being physical and speed. You've got to be physical at the point of attack as well as coming off the ball fast. The faster you get off the ball, the easier your job will be. "You've also got to attack with a physical mindset that this guy's not going to beat me, this guy's not going to whoop me. Once you get that mindset, you'll be fine." Wooden ar rived in Auburn with high expectations as a four-star recruit from Lawrenceville, Georgia, but his first season with the Tigers he was limited thanks to the Tigers' depth. He appeared in three games in 2019, which allowed him to redshirt while learning a mong the Auburn's more-experienced linemen. - Opelika-Auburn News

Regardless of where he has lined up, though, Wooden has gotten the job done. Through the Tigers' six games, he has recorded 29 tackles, with seven for a loss - including 1.5 sacks - and three quarterback hurries. His seven stops behind the line of scrimm age not only lead the SEC this season, but they're the most by an Auburn freshman - true or redshirt - in a single season since Carl Lawson had 7.5 in 2013. Lawson reached that mark over 14 games, while Wooden has done it in just six, with at least four remaining on the schedule this season. Wooden's 1.17 tackles for loss per game, so far, are the most by any Auburn player since Dee Ford finished with 1.21 per contest in 2013. "Colby's a great player," sophomore edge-rusher Derick Hall said. "… We kne w coming into this year that he had a great opportunity to help us, but like you said, he's the best guy in the SEC-in the country, in my opinion-to get tackles for loss, and just being that key guy to help us contribute as a D-line unit. He's really ste pped up to that role." - Birmingham News

Two players really stood out at "surprises" on the top line at their respective positions - redshirt freshman defensive tackle Colby Wooden and redshirt freshman cornerback Jaylin Simpson. Wooden, who was praised by defensive coordinator Kevin Steele as one of Auburn's biggest risers this offseason, earned the defensive tackle spot previously held by consensus All-American Derrick Brown, beating out senior Daquan Newkirk for the starting job, while Simpson secured the No. 2 cornerback spot opposite Roge r McCreary. - Birmingham News

Colby Wooden wasn't himself during his first season on the Plains. The former four-star defensive end redshirted in 2019, appearing in just four games after a bout of mono set him back as a true freshman. He couldn't work out with his teammates during th at time and dropped a bunch of weight - dipping below 240 pounds. Toward the end of the season, though, Wooden bounced back. He was stronger and "leaner and more powerful and explosive," former defensive end Marlon Davidson said in December, and his weig ht was back up to 260. As Davidson put it, Wooden got his "juice back." Following a prolonged and unusual offseason, Wooden has the juices flowing again and could take the biggest step forward this season among Auburn's returning defensive linemen as the Tigers try to maintain their dominance up front following the departures of Davidson, Derrick Brown and Nick Coe."Colby Wooden is a guy that you would have to say is not the star, but you would have to say he's one of the guys that has just taken a big jump from last year to this year," defensive coordinator Kevin Steele said. "He's played really well. Very mature." A big reason for that jump in readiness, Steele said, is credited to the work of strength and conditioning coach Ryan Russell this offseason. After Wooden shed all that weight last season during his bout with mono, he certainly had the most to gain from a full offseason of work with Russell. - Birmingham News
