Kamryn Babb, Ohio State, Player News
|
Ohio State wide receiver Kamryn Babb announced on Tuesday he won't return next season, forgoing the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to all players in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. "I'm excited to start the next chapter that God has for me by sharing my story with the world," Babb said in a video posted on his social media accounts. Injuries, which included four anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, mired much of Babb's five seasons with the Buckeyes, but his perseverance ma de him an inspiration to teammates and led him to twice be selected as one of the team captains.Babb also became the recipient of the Block "O" jersey this past fall, an honor given in recent seasons in recognition of legendary Ohio State lineman Bill Willis. He caught his first career pass late in a blowout win over Indiana in November when quarterback C.J. Stroud found him in a corner of the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown. A mob of teammates immediately mobbed him in celebration. - Columbus D ispatch

Repeated injuries have not diminished Kamryn Babb's leadership capacity with Ohio State football. Even after another torn ACL - his fourth - prematurely ended his 2021 season, Babb was named one of the Buckeye captains. On Saturday, the program bestowed the fifth-year receiver another honor by naming him the "Block O" No. 0 jersey recipient for 2022. "The last five years have been a long journey," Babb said in an OSU news release. "There were times when I was down and had a lot of questions. But God put people in my life who wouldn't let me give up and it's been a blessing. I couldn't have done this without them." Ohio State began the Block O tradition prior to the 2020 season. Defensive end Jonathon Cooper wore the jersey that season. Offensive linema n Thayer Munford, last season's recipient, wore it during warm-ups but could not wear it in games due to NCAA uniform number rules. The honor is designated for a player who displays the same toughness, accountability and character Willis was known for in his career. Babb was an obvious choice. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

When Kamryn Babb felt the pain in his right knee, he had more reason than anyone on the planet to think, "Oh, no. Not again." The Ohio State wide receiver was blocking during a spring practice when it happened. But he was instantly reassured when the pai n didn't feel the same as it did the four times - yes, four - he has torn his ACL since 2017. Babb has become an unwanted expert on such pain, and his hunch was correct. The injury was to his meniscus, and after arthroscopic surgery he has declared himse lf fully healthy. "It was maybe three or four weeks that I was out, but it wasn't crazy compared to what I've experienced in the past, so I'm thankful for that," Babb said Tuesday before speaking to kids at a Greater Columbus Sports Commission youth camp at KIPP Columbus. His message to the kids, ages 6-12, was a natural one for Babb: Never give up. Babb first tore his ACL before his senior season of high school in St. Louis. Then came three more at Ohio State, including last season. His only acti on as a Buckeye has been on special teams in 2020. Still, his perseverance and leadership impressed his teammates so much that he was voted a captain last year. Babb credits his religious faith for helping him cope with the injuries and provide the motiv ation to return to the field. "I'm not strong enough within myself to be standing here and saying I'll persevere through four," he said, "because there have definitely been days where I've wanted to give up." - Columbus Dispatch
